A Conversation with Patricia and Walter Wells
from Weekday Podcast June 04, 2008
First, a conversation on the week's news from Canada with correspondent Vaughn Palmer of the Vancouver Sun. Then, some observers call Patricia Wells the foremost American expert on French food. But when Wells and her husband Walter moved to Paris almost 30 years ago, they barely spoke French. Somehow the couple made a home for themselves in Paris, where they built careers with the International Herald Tribune, and in Provence, where Patricia Wells runs an acclaimed cooking school. Wells has written a series of acclaimed books about food including The Food Lover's Guide to Paris. Now the couple has written a memoir about their accidental lives as American expatriates in France. KUOW's Marcie Sillman bring us this special interview with the couple. Also, the ruin of Stonehenge in county of Wiltshire, England, has long been a marvel and a mystery. How did it come to be? What was it built for? New archeological research indicates that Stonehenge has been a burial ground from its very beginning; as early as 3000 B.C. Today we'll speak with the lead archeologist of the Stonehenge Riverside Project about the latest discoveries. What do the recent revelations about Stonehenge tell us about history? What mysteries are yet to be solved?Tomorrow on Weekday: Vikings, Conquistadors and Cities of Gold

Portables Archeology
from de portables (topless is more!) May 12, 2008
Another lost portables track turned up while I was checking an unlabeled tape. What first seemed like a typical 1999 self-made post-rock and electronica compilation tape turned out to contain a disregarded portables track. Nothing happened with this track anymore, I bet not a single portable even remembers it in his random recollections of glorious recording spurs memory (RROGRSM). In the end, isn t that what archeology is all about: uncovering the forgotten? The track itself was actually recorded by only Hans and Jürgen. You can clearly hear a funny evalution discussion at the very end of the track. The track itself is a 10 minute droney guitar epic that resides somewhere in between Pink Floyd s Welcome to the Machine and Village Of Savoonga. It features an old 78-rpm record player in the intro and was recorded @ Zon i Bos on a Digital 8-track. download mp3

History - Guns, Germs and Steel 2-18
from YouTube :: Recently Added Videos April 21, 2008
Episode One : Out of Eden Time of Equality At the end of the last Ice Age, around thirteen thousand years ago, people on all continents followed a so-called Stone Age way of life -- they survived by hunting and gathering the available wild animals and plants. When resources were plentiful, this was a productive way of life. But in times of scarcity, hunting and gathering was a precarious mode of survival. Populations remained relatively small, and the simple task of finding food occupied every waking moment. Around eleven and a half thousand years ago, the world's climate suddenly changed. In an aftershock of the Ice Age, temperatures plummeted and global rainfall reduced. The impact of this catastrophe was felt most keenly in an area known as the Fertile Crescent, in the modern Middle East. Here, hunter-gathers had thrived on some of the most useful and plentiful flora and fauna in the world. They had even developed semi-permanent settlements to exploit the resources around them. Now, with their food options disappearing from the menu on a daily basis, these people did something remarkable. They began to cultivate the hardiest species of surviving plants and animals, even bringing seeds back to their villages and planting new stock. They were becoming farmers.
