Oaxacan Women March for Respect
from Alive in Mexico February 15, 2007
On November 19th, women of Oaxaca marched to protest disrespect and harassment by the Federal Police. These women demanded respect of their dignity and the freedom to walk through the Zocalo or town square without fear of harassment. The women allege the PFP has been responsible not only for sexual harassment but in some cases assault. Until now we have not heard of any reprisals against Federal police forces. At this time the PFP have been withdrawn from Oaxaca City, however Municipal Police have been placed in control of the Zocalo and it remains to be seen whether the conflict in Oaxaca has finally subsided. Please consider making a donation to support the work of Mexican citizen journalists! The Last Barricade of Oaxaca
from Alive in Mexico December 16, 2006
The Cinco Senores Barricade has been a bit of a bone of contention, as have many things in Oaxaca. When the original leadership of APPO was dissolved, different tensions came into play between various factions of the Assembly. The members of Cinco Senores, somewhat autonomously, established the barricade as a defense of the University in the event of a full assault against the Radio and the central organizing point for APPO. These interviews were shot just days before the barricade was finally removed by PFP troops on November 29th. The whereabouts of the speakers or what happened to them in the final struggle and aftermath of the end of November is still unknown. Although the barricade has been removed, it is believed that its supporters and much of the other membership of APPO is still around Oaxaca, in hiding, and regrouping for their next actions. It remains to be seen whether the conflict has come to a close, or simply moved on to a new phase. This work is entirely viewer-funded, so please consider making whatever donation you can, if you appreciate our work.

November 25th Grand March in Oaxaca
from Alive in Mexico December 01, 2006
On November 25th, tens of thousands of residents of Oaxaca and the surrounding pueblas(towns), arrived in the historic center of Oaxaca City, to surround the Zocalo. They came in a symbolic role, to surround the Federal Preventive Police(PFP), and demand the immediate removal of the PFP and Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz.Although there was a peaceful march from miles outside the city, and they arrived in a festive atmosphere, this level of almost game-like interchange between the PFP and demonstrators, with each lobbing small rocks or using slingshots, did not last.At approximately 4:30 in the afternoon events changed and the peaceful march descended into running street battles which later broke up into groups roaming the streets for hours and resulted in at least 6 dead, primarily in front of the Facultad de Medecina, north of the Zocalo, when the building was sprayed with bullets by an unknown gang.Information such as this and accurate numbers of the people present in the day's march were lost in the mainstream media. If you value a personal on the ground account, please consider making a donation to continue our work, which is entirely viewer-funded.

What Might a Zocalo Look Like?
from Alive in Mexico November 23, 2006
According to Wikipedia, A zcalo is a central town square or plaza, usually located in Mexican cities. The most famous Zcalo is that of Mexico City, which is formally known as the Plaza de la Constitucin, The government district of Mexico City is known after this. Zcalos were often the original central squares of Mesoamerican cities that were coopted by the Spanish conquerors. In Oaxaca Mexico, after a pitched battle with demonstrators who had occupied the Zocalo for months, Mexico's Federal Preventive Police, or PFP, occupied Oaxaca's Zocalo. In this video you will see what the Zocalo looks like today, currently occupied by perhaps one or two thousand members of this federal police force.Alive in Mexico is a project started by the founders of Alive in Baghdad, and is entirely viewer funded. Please consider making a generous donation to support this work.
