Automobile History with Bill Schutz

TV TRAVERSE CITY: Hello and thank you for watching this special edition of the inside scoop on TVTRAVERSECITY.com. Today we are talking about Automobile History - about Antique Cars - to be specific and with us in the studio today we have the former Chief Judge of the Le Circle Concours d'Elegance in Los Angeles, Mr. Bill Schutz. Thank you for being on the program! Bill Schutz: Thank you, Franz. TV TRAVERSE CITY: When talking about Antique Cars, what time period are we looking at? Bill Schutz: As far as the Official Clubs would rule, the Horseless Carriage Club would say that any car built from the beginning of cars, approximately 1892 up until 1915. Then the next class would be Vintage Cars which would be 1915 to approximately 1925. And then the Classic Era of Cars would go from 1925 to 1947. There are also several other classifications of cars such as Vintage, Special Interest, High Performance and Sports Cars. They all fit into the different time periods. Tonight I am going to start a series about the Antique and Classic Cars that were built in America from approximately 1892 up through present time. There were over 2000 different marks during that period of time which is almost impossible to believe. Two thousand! Today we are down to less than 20. The subject I want to cover tonight is the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan which probably most people under the age of 30 may not have ever heard of. However, as far as American History goes, it was probably one of the most famous - if not the most famous - Automobile mark in the world. The Packard Motor Car Company actually went into existence in 1899 and it started from a very unusual situation. Mr. James Ward Packard bought a Winton Automobile back in the late 1800s and he disliked the car so much that he went to Mr. Winton and complained about it eccessively. Winton's comeback was: "Well, if you're so smart, why don't you make your own?" and he [Packard] decided to do so. So in 1899 this mark started, and quickly it went through about 1956 which was the last year of production. During those years they had probably - and I would actually say not probably but undoubtedly - the most famous Automotive History in the world. They sold cars in the 19 Teens to the Kaiser of Germany, the Czar of Russia, they actually sold more high powered, high class, high end cars than any other Automobile Company ever did in the world, including the famous Rolls Royce mark. In fact Rolls Royce only sold more cars in England, Packard exceeded them in every other country. I am going to give you a very quick, brief history of the Packard Motor Car Company. It started out, as I said earlier, in 1899 and progressed until about 1912. In that year they came out with an Automobile called the Six or the Sixty. That car was a Six Cylinder, 525 Cubic Inch engine, fully oil pressurized, gas headlights, kerosene lanternes, kerosene tail light, an Automobile that was capable of doing approximately 84 miles per hour. It is still renouned for being to outchase the Police Department after a bank robbery - probably not the most preferable memory one could have but nevertheless historical. Packard then in 1915 came out with the world famous Twin Six, it was a V 12. You could literally balance a quarter on its edge on the radiator and it wouldn't tip over with the engine running. This put them on the map historically worldwide and from there it only became better and better. They held the land, the air and the water speed records for the world for numerous years all at one time. No other maker was ever able to attain that. During World War I they built the famous Liberty V 12 engines for Rolls Royce. They were credited mainly with the inherent airforce being able to overcome in World War I and to defeat the Germans and to bring that war to a successful conclusion. Packard also built the only successful Diesel Aircraft engine that had ever been built and went on to do one - frankly I don't want to use the word miraculous, but nearly that - engineering feat one after another. In 1912 they hired the very famous, genius, Colonel Jesse Vincent who is credited with inventing the bureau's ten key calculator. This was something the world had never realized. There was a man, named Gar Wood, and those of you who are interested in Antique and Classic Boats will know this name - probably the most famous Boat Maker in history. Mr. Wood did race after race, trying to attain the world's record for speed, which he did year after year. Gar Wood owned his own personal yacht in which he hired the Packard Motor Car Company to build him four engines to power that yacht. This was a very successful venture and one must remember back in the late 20s and 30s there wasn't the money that we have available today. So he took those engines from his yacht and built a race boat called the Miss America 10. This boat was to become the world's Grand Champion Price Winner, All Time Trophy Winner for speed records in the world. He built this boat and in 1932 they went into a race. There were four Packard V 12 engines and those engines produced between the four of them a total of 5400 horsepower. During that race on the Detroit River the Miss America hit a log and the boat literally exploded and sank to the bottom of the Detroit River. At that particular point they knew that they needed everything basically brand new so they contacted the Packard Motor Car Company and for that short period of time they were not able to deliver the four engines that were required. So the next step was that Gar Wood himself decided to hire a Marine Surveying Company which with Sonic Engineering sounded the bottom of the Detroit River to find the engines that were actually about 16 feet under the mud. Successfully finding them, they went ahead and did a salvage rescue and pulled the engines out of the Detroit River, disassembled them completely, sent them to Packard, they were cleaned, re-built, put back together and set up into the boat. At this particular time they not only successfully completed that race and won the World's Grand Prix Championship but they did it with an all time, never heard of speed record of over 125 miles per hour! Even today, that is very fast for the water. So when one considers that those engines were running wide open when the boat exploded, went down through the water, sank many feet under the mud, were able to be disassembled, cleaned, re-built and re-assembled, to go ahead and win and actually take the World's Grand Championship, it's rather interesting. The last Packard was built in 1956. At that time Packard and the Studebaker Corporation merged and for two more years through 1958 they produced a car named Packard, however it was just a Studebaker with the Packard name on it. TV TRAVERSE CITY: What kind of families would purchase a Packard car? Bill Schutz: For instance in 1932 when the average man would make about 4 Dollars per week, a 12 Cylinder Packard would sell for up to 5200 Dollars. So it would be strictly a family with high volumes of income that would be able to do this. However by the time 1935 arrived, even the Packard Motor Car Company realized they had to go ahead and make some changes. So they then produced a car that the common working man could own which was called the 110, one step up the 120 and then the famous Super 8 and Packard 12 continued on. To work on the 12 Cylinder Packard line or the senior car line, one had to have at least 20 years seniority with the company to even be considered to be on that line. TV TRAVERSE CITY: Now if I was a car collector today and I would be interested in an Antique Car, how would I go about getting a hold of looking at Antique Cars and perhaps purchasing one? Bill Schutz: Things have changed many times over the years. Back in the 1960s and 70s one could go for instance to the Los Angeles Times and probably find anything you wanted. Today however the most famous and probably reliable source would be Hemmings Motor News. And that would cover just about every make of car that has ever been produced and that is collectible and is for sale today on a month to month basis. TV TRAVERSE CITY: Interesting! Bill Schutz: Today to own a Packard one would consider that the minimum amount would be about 40,000 Dollars up to about 3 Million Dollars. TV TRAVERSE CITY: Now, from your experience would you say that even today in the year 2008 is it still a good investment to purchase an Antique Car? Bill Schutz: Probably not as good as it was 20 years ago. 20 years ago they were appreciating probably 30 to 50 percent a year. Today it would be more of a basis of owning something that would be a piece of Americana that still is fully drivable. A 37 or 38 Packard V 12 could easily attain speeds of 70 to 80 miles an hour all day long. TV TRAVERSE CITY: Bill, that was very impressive, thank you for the story and thanks again for being on the show. We'll see you next time on TV TRAVERSE CITY. Thanks for watching.

First Snow from Tripp Woelfel on Vimeo. Taken with a Canon HV10 literally in my back yard the morning after the first snowfall of the season. I used Adobe Premier Pro CS3 for editing and After Effects for the titles. Color correction was done to each shot to bring up the colors in very flat lighting. This is the first of a series. I'll post additional videos as I finish them. Cast: Tripp Woelfel

Color correction using Sony Vegas and a DJTV tutorial from Oliver Reik on Vimeo. I followed the tutorial "Cutting Class: The Joy of Coloring" on Digital Juice DJTV an tried it on some of my footage, which I took during a journey to Australia and Dubai. In the rectangle you can see the result of the color correction. The changes I made were only very minor and mainly just the adjustment of contrast and luminance. My original footage was already pretty good, as I adjusted the white balance before every single shot. My camera was a Canon HV10, I use Sony Vegas 7 Pro Cast: Oliver Reik
