GRITtv: Mary McBride: Love and Music

GRITtv: Mary McBride: Love and Music

Her voice is part angel, part truck driver, as if to say sometimes you power through sadness, and sometimes you just hope for a miracle. That's what the New York Times wrote about Mary McBride, whose voice you may recognize from her song "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me" from Ang Lee's film Brokeback Mountain. Mary has a new holiday album out, Every Day Is a Holiday, and she joins Laura to talk songwriting, Brokeback, and why it never occurred to her to be in the closet.

As the Copenhagen conference on climate change begins this week, 56 newspapes in 45 countries carried one editorial that called for common action around the world, for governments of countries rich and poor, developed and developing to work together for solutions. In part, it reads:Few believe that Copenhagen can any longer produce a fully polished treaty; real progress towards one could only begin with the arrival of President Obama in the White House and the reversal of years of US obstructionism. Even now the world finds itself at the mercy of American domestic politics, for the president cannot fully commit to the action required until the US Congress has done so.Since U.S. presidents and Congress have dragged their heels, local activists and governments have often taken the lead in pushing for stronger regulations and innovations. While journalists and delegates converge on the summit, we talk to some New Yorkers working for change in their own backyards. Miquela Craytor, Executive Director of Sustainable South Bronx, James Gennaro of the New York City Council, and Dale Bryk of the Natural Resources Defense Council are all working in different ways to create sustainable jobs and fight climate change.John Nichols of the Nation focuses on the "jobs" part of that equation, noting that the unemployment rate has rippling real-world effects and calling for the government to shift TARP (bank bailout) money to create a jobs program. To lighten things up a little, we have Mary McBride, whose voice you may recognize from her song "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me" from Ang Lee's film Brokeback Mountain. Mary has a new holiday album out, Every Day Is a Holiday, and she talks songwriting, Brokeback, and being out of the closet as a musician with a very mixed audience. Finally, we revisit Honduras, where the recent election was boycotted by supporters of ousted President Manuel Zelaya.

The Copenhagen climate conference this week focuses on creating a new global pact as a successor to the Kyoto Accord. But the U.S. never ratified the treaty, and Congress is still lagging behind on passing legislation to deal with global warming. Local activists and governments have often taken the lead in pushing for stronger regulations and innovations, while the federal government lags behind. We talk to some New Yorkers working for change in their own backyards. Miquela Craytor, Executive Director of Sustainable South Bronx, James Gennaro of the New York City Council, and Dale Bryk of the Natural Resources Defense Council are all working in different ways to create sustainable jobs and fight climate change.

Ang Lee s latest film Taking Woodstock received mixed reviews. I had a chance to speak with Ang Lee when he was in San Francisco to promote the film. Ang Lee explained what he thinks about the movie, and he chooses to tell the story in such a way. First part of this interview is in Mandarin. In the second part, Director Lee and his partner James Shamus talked in English about their perspective roles in the movie.
