Kansas City Iraq Vet, Tomas Young, featured in the film Body of War is in the VA hospital, possibly facing abdominal surgery. This week's show starts off with a re-broadcast of an interview he gave Tell Somebody in the fall of 2005. In the second half of the show, Democracy Now's Denis Moynihan talks about how Amy Goodman, along with Moynihan and a DNow staffer were detained by Canadian authorities as they tried to go to Goodman's speaking engagement in Vancouver. By the time Amy Goodman spoke to a standing room only crowd at Vancouver's Public Library on Wednesday, November 25, there was one thing on everyone's mind: the 2010 Olympics. Goodman's talk started over an hour late, because the US radio host was detained by Canadian Border Services Agency, who asked her if she would be talking about the Olympics during her speech. "I'm embarrassed, cause as some people who know me know, I'm not a real sports fan," said Goodman, who said her knowledge of the 2010 Olympics was "exactly zero." "To say the least I'm very taken aback by what I just went through, very shocked to be asked what I was going to talk about, and to see my colleagues computers being gone through" at the border, she said, before proceeding with her talk.

Sarah Palin's book, Going Rogue: An American Life , comes out tomorrow, and the corporate media has been all Palin, all the time. We wonder just what it is about the former Alaskan governor that keeps people coming back for more. Is it her folksy ways, her sex appeal, her gender, or her willingness to completely disregard the advice of well-intentioned handlers?Richard Kim, senior editor at The Nation, is co-editor of a new book timed for release along with Palin's. Titled Going Rouge: Sarah Palin, An American Nightmare, the book collects essays from around the progressive media analyzing the mysterious appeal of Sarah Palin. Richard joins us along with contributors Rebecca Traister of Salon, Max Blumenthal, author of Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party , and Shannyn Moore of Smart Radio in Alaska to talk about the books, the Right, and why Palin just won't go away. While Sarah Palin blankets the mainstream media, independent media tries to cover all the stories that are getting missed. Independent radio and television pioneer Amy Goodman has been creating a different kind of news program for years with Democracy Now!, first on Pacifica Radio and now on television. She joined Laura in the GRITtv studio to talk about her new book, Breaking the Sound Barrier, making independent media, and her struggles with the health care system while dealing with her mother's recent illness.Speaking of health care, Senator Bernie Sanders breaks it down for our viewers: what's in the House and Senate plans, what's good, what needs work, and what's absolutely unacceptable? (Hint: we covered it a bit last week.)In San Francisco, hotel workers at the Grand Hyatt, many of them Chinese immigrants, were recently told that their new contract would require them to pay for their own health insurance. The workers went on strike, protesting that this decision would make them choose between paying for health care and putting food on the table. From Syracuse, New York this weekend, a protest of drone aircraft, including Kathy Kelly of Voices for Creative Nonviolence and Daniel and Jerry Berrigan, gathered outside of the Hancock Air National Guard Base. Thanks to New America Media, Brave New Films, and EssentialDissent for the video.

"Ralph Nader and Patti Smith: Awake From Your Slumber" "Awake From Your Slumber" brings together two visionaries: citizen-activist Ralph Nader and punk poet Patti Smith, in a powerful dialogue of war and peace. Touring together as the Democracy Rising Peace Tour, Ralph and Patti make the case against the Iraq war and the corporate takeover of our democracy. Produced by the Hudson Mohawk Independent Media Center, Awake mixes image, music and spoken word to strip away the facade of political lies and reveal the annihilation of civilization, war profiteering, the unseen dead, and the unheard cries of motherhood. Awake From Your Slumber is history lesson, poetry reading and rock concert. Above all, it is an inspiring, mesmerizing, and deeply moving call to action, showing the power of the people to make change. Special features include three additional songs by Patti Smith, an interview with Ralph Nader by Amy Goodman, and additional information about Ralph, Patti, Democracy Rising and the Hudson-Mohawk Indy Media Center. 2008.
