For the Love of an American Soldier
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) May 14, 2008
Karin Yount shares her memories of living in Germany during WWII. I had a stormy youth and lived through WWII that most Americans just read about. That is why I appreciate American wealth and freedom which people here enjoy so casually. During WWII my mother and I lived in East Prussia, Germany. As the Eastern Front approached Hitler's orders were that no one was allowed to leave town. Nazi propaganda was blasting over the radio not to surrender to Red Army. Concentration camps were established for all those who disobeyed. It was a bitter cold northern winter of 1945 when my mother and I finally left on foot carrying whatever we could heading West. All town officials were long evacuated. Many old and young people froze on the road. We became homeless refugees like thousands others trying to reach American Zone. We slept in bombed our railroad stations, refugee camps, public air raid cellars... Our country was in ruins. At war end we finally reached Bavaria. There was no food or coal available. We traded our jewelry for food. In order to get ration cards for my mother and myself I gathered by courage and started to work as interpreter for American Headquarters with my high school English. I learned quickly from American GIs and their newspaper. There I met a handsome US Lt. who later became my husband. It was difficult decision, a fork in my life's road...to leave my mother alone, my home and my defeated country for the love of an American soldier! But I never regretted it. We had a happy life together for 48 years until death did us part. America is my beloved adopted country and I am a great patriot of it. I am leaving this legacy for my children and grandchildren.
