Wired Jesus Podcast #43 - Losing My ReligionWired Jesus Podcast #43 - Losing My Religion
from Wired Jesus Podcast
June 26, 2008

Here s the long awaited #43. I apologize for the sound quality - I had the air conditioner running and it was louder than what I realized. Recently I have been pondering the rise and decling of Starbucks and their efforts to reconnect with their core values. What I see happening is their origins of offering a coffee experience in community has given way to selling a coffee product for corporate profit. While they are trying to make a turnaround, I see the same thing happening in the church, not just now but throughout its history. This is just my wired take on the situation. No featured congregation with this podcast - just a little too much going on today to get that done too. Enjoy! Download the podcast here. Wired Jesus Podcast #42 - When Wii = WeWired Jesus Podcast #42 - When Wii = We
from Wired Jesus Podcast
April 24, 2008

Had this podcast ready a week ago but didn t have time to get it posted. If you haven t had a chance to play on a Wii, you are in for a surprising treat even if you can t blow anything up. What I found this past Easter is that the Wii may be an emerging venue for the re-formation of family and community. I know, its sounds wack but take a listen. Download the podcast here. Featured Congregation Check out Jacob Porch, the Lutheran Campus Ministry at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. Pastor Jay Gamelin is very real about creating authentic community not only for the students on campus but in ways that regular congregations could learn from. They are even doing a U2charist next month! Its good enough almost to make of Michigan fan like me give a little love toward the Scarlet and Gray. Almost. Program note: I had some issues with Audacity on my Macbook Pro while recording this podcast, so I m not completely happy with it. However, with a temporary lock up that almost cost me all the data, I just burned the mp3 and posted it, minus some level editing and some background music I didn t intend, so its a little rougher than normal. I figured you rather have the podcast than none at all this week..
Wired Jesus Podcast #40 - When Did Reality Become A TV Show?Wired Jesus Podcast #40 - When Did Reality Become A TV Show?
from Wired Jesus Podcast
March 10, 2008

Finally, a new podcast. You would think in between trying to find a new call, selling a house, and doing the HGTV home improvement thing, I could squeeze in more podcasting time! In light of my son s 18th birthday, here s some reflections on reality show, YouTube, and the spiritual journey that might make me sound like a grumpy old man. I hope not. I do think that as digital life becomes more and more integrated to daily life in meatworld, its moving us back more quickly to authentic, face to face, person to person friendships and intimacy. Likewise, we want a God who is more than a name online but someone who can really touch us. However, what we are are calling reality on TV is more about debasement than humanization, so here are my thoughts on the whole thing. Also, here is a new addition to every podcast - the featured congregation. Each podcast I will highlight a different congregation that I think is a great example of a group of Christians who are real about connecting with postmodern generations without becoming totally stuck on themselves about it. This months featured congregation is Artisan Church in Rochester, NY. Here is the link to more of my thoughts on the good folks at Artisan. Download the podcast here. Randall KennedyRandall Kennedy
from KUOW's Speaker's Forum
February 22, 2008

What is a sellout? Randall Kennedy says all prominent black Americans have at some time or another been called sellouts. Why? What's behind it? What do people give up in order to avoid being called a sellout by their peers? In this lecture at Town Hall Seattle, Kennedy quickly opens the floor up for questions because he says he wants to have a good discussion. He talks about how Barack Obama has been called a sellout by some and he explores the roots behind it. Kennedy's latest book is Sellout: The Politics of Racial Betrayal. He spoke on January 15th, 2008. The talk was sponsored by Town Hall Center for Civic Life with University Book Store.

Novelist Colson Whitehead and the Name that Hides the HurtNovelist Colson Whitehead and the Name that Hides the Hurt
from KUOW's Weekday
January 14, 2008

Colson Whitehead is receiving accolades as a young writer with insight into race and culture in America. His second novel, John Henry Days, which played off the relationship between the 19th century railroad hero and a modern journalist, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. He says his newest book, Apex Hides the Hurt, is about identity, history, and the adhesive bandage industry. It is also about the manipulation of language and the way clever words can conceal injured histories. He joins us to extol the power of bandages. Colson Whitehead is speaking tonight, January 14th, 2008, at Benaroya Hall at 7:30 p.m.in a Seattle Arts and Lecture event.
Crisis in capitalism?Crisis in capitalism?
from Bill Moyers Journal (Video) | PBS
December 21, 2007

In the midst of the holiday spending and consumption frenzy, Bill Moyers interviews author Benjamin Barber about how capitalism isn't living up to its potential to serve society. "Capitalism is no longer manufacturing goods to meet real needs and human wants," says Barber. "It's manufacturing needs to sell us all the goods it's got to produce." Barber is the author of 17 books including international best-seller Jihad vs. McWorld and Consumed: How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow Citizens Whole. Also on the program: is it time to rewrite the Constitution? Moyers gets perspective from the University of Texas Law School's Sanford Levinson, author of Our Undemocratic Constitution: Where the Constitution Goes Wrong (and How We the People Can Correct It). And an update on changes to media regulations voted on this week by the FCC.

Wired Jesus Podcast #36 - Food For the SoulWired Jesus Podcast #36 - Food For the Soul
from Wired Jesus Podcast
September 29, 2007

As I mention in the podcast, I am a big foodie and in this podcast I reflect on two of my favorite food shows - Feasting on Asphalt with Alton Brown and Anthony Bourdain s No Reservations. The thing that fascinates me about both shows and both hosts is that it is just ongoing evidence is that postmodern has more to do with perspective than age. These guys are as real as they get and in their search for regional/world food, what you really get is food for the soul that we have often forgotten in our McChurches.
