It has been mixed in Stereo only. The entire album was an experiment recorded in early 1999 sometime using SAW Pro. The album was release as a CD-r in 2000 and then finally on CD in 2003. Typhonian XI° From the time of Medieval gothic cathedrals, to the present realm of electronic music, The Convolving Universe brings both together for a brief visionistic sonic experience. Hear the depth of highly processed choirs, voices, and other natural sounds in 5.1 Surround or stereo. It is sometimes shimmering, sometimes haunting, but very deep and filled with mystical resonance. The album consists of nine heavenly angelic mystical ambient songs. It was recorded and mixed in 5.1 surround and is available in both normal stereo CD and a soon to be available DVD-Audio 5.1 surround. The sound of angels has always been audibly represented as human voices or a choir of voices. It seems to focus one's attention into the more ethereal areas of consciousness to transcend the human condition. The sound creates a spiritual sanctuary where thoughts and ideas live in the present. This is a state of being that rarely gets visited. The album reflects my own exploration into these mystical realms. It combines the essence of medieval gothic choirs with modern day electronics to produce a visionistic sonic experience not normally found in present day electronic music. You will hear choirs and voices of angels that have been highly processed electronically. It is sometimes shimmering, sometimes haunting, but very deep and filled with mystical resonance. The album was created using a process called Convolution, which is a digital signal processing algorithm where the spectral information from one sound (the impulse) is multiplied together with spectral information of another sound (the sound source). Both the impulse and the source sounds can be minutes long and produce some of the most interesting sounds imaginable. I started by playing a simple 4 to 8 note phrase using single and multi-voiced choir samples. I then recorded the resulting phrase into another sampling keyboard and then played it one would a normal piano. I only could play a few notes in each octave or it would start to sound very chaotic. I then convolved these resulting loops with a variety of other sounds (impulses), and finally mixed these to create the songs. I also used a vocoder in many of the tracks as well as samples of my own voice. The album took two solid weeks to master. The convolution process creates some pretty heavy overtones that made it very difficult to control the sound. This was on of the most difficult albums to master.
