In Waikiki at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua, extends this beautiful jetty simply called The Waikiki Wall. It s a favorite local spot that s been around for decades and is popular for boogie boarders and the occasional jump off the wall. On July 4th we spent our day hanging out in Waikiki soaking up the sun and catching some of the latest action at the wall. While this is a beautiful place to enjoy some fun in the sun and a splash in the water, we CAUTION you that it is very DANGEROUS to jump off the wall and to boogie board here due to the shallow waters that surround the wall. In fact if you do take a visit to the wall, you ll notice how the more knowledgeable locals wait for a wave to come in before jumping off the wall. Despite the dangers it is still one of the best places around for some genuine ocean fun, so be sure and pay it a visit! Beach Walk 642R - Memorial Day in the Pacific We originally filmed this episode for Memorial Day in 2006. But it clearly stands out as a timeless message, and represents the true magic of Beach Walks. It is all completely unscripted, no shot list, we just showed up and worked as fast as we could before the sun set. Sometimes, you know the universe is on your side. This is one of our favorite and most powerful episodes, though you won't be finding us at the beach.Today's show was filmed at the Hawaii Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. 50,000 leis were donated, and over 100 young Boy Scouts (thanks for the correction Mark) placed a lei and a flag on each gravestone. I was quite stirred to be in the presence of death while smelling the sweet scent of plumeria lei. Though most of those buried here are from modern wars, this "punchbowl" of an ancient volcano was the site of Hawaiian aliʻi burials and human sacrifice of those who violated the kapu or taboos. Dedicated to my dad and my friend Eric, who's done two tours in Iraq. Punalu u Beach (also called Black Sand Beach) is a beach near Nā ālehu on the Big Island of the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi. The beach has black sand created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools. This volcanic activity is in the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Punalu u is frequented by endangered Hawksbill Turtles and Green Sea Turtles, which can often be seen basking on the black sand. Visitors must remain 15 feet from the turtles at all times. The swimming area is very rocky, and it can be dangerous to swim. The beach also has a large amount of underground fresh water that flows in it. This fresh water is very cold and looks almost like gasoline mixing with the water. Legend has it that in the time of drought, the early Hawaiians living in the area would dive underwater with a jug to get their fresh water.
