(1) "Seizure of Eindhoven - An air train, over 285 miles in length, and containing over 2,000 planes and gliders, takes off from England for Holland. Near Eindhoven, thousands of chutists 'hit the silk,' floating down to join the glider troops. Occasional families show forced smiles, and the children are trusting of the invaders. French forts in the Maginot Line, fortified with 105 mm. Krupp guns, are turned around by the Yanks. Then Nazi shells are lobbed over the Moselle River into the ranks of the Nazis. At Vittel, France, 2,000 British and Americans are abandoned by the Nazis in a huge internment camp." "From Lyons to Orleans - At Lyons, the Nazis take refuge in a huge hospital. The F.F.I. blasts them until the building is set on fire. At Orleans, 20,000 Nazis march up to a gun pile, in formation, and throw down their arms. Then they enter a large prisoner compound." Newsreel The End Buy Bonds. (partial newsreel)

(06) Battlefield II: "Guadalcanal" 6 of 10
from YouTube :: Tag // lost June 14, 2008
SUBSCRIBE TO EXCELLENT WORLD WAR II VIDEOS Videos Running Time: 01:32:00 in 10 Parts Battlefield II: "Guadalcanal" This fast paced episode of "Battlefield" chronicles the slugging match between the United States/Allied Forces and Imperial Japan over a little known Island in the Southwest Pacific called Guadalcanal. In 1942 Japan was fixated with isolating and eventually invading Australia at the conclusion of their campaign in New Guinea. The small British colonial outpost of Guadalcanal seemed a logical step southward. With no Allied defense, the Japanese invaded Guadalcanal and other smaller islands. Japan immediately set out in building an air base on Lunga Point, Guadalcanal. Eventually, coast watchers and air reconnaissance discovered the construction on Lunga Point. It was decided to invade Guadalcanal and the neighboring islands with the untested and green U.S. 1st Marine Division (Maj.Gen Alexander Vandegrift MOH). What both sides failed to realize was Guadalcanal would turn into a brutal campaign. The US 1st Marine Division began landing on Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Gavutu and Tanambogo on August 7th 1942. The landings on Guadalcanal went uncontested and the Marines immediately occupied the unfinished airstrip. The Japanese launched air attacks from Rabaul sinking only 1 transport for a loss of 36 aircraft. Several days later the Japanese inflicted one of the worse naval defeats the US Navy has ever suffered. On August 9th, 1942, the Japanese Imperial Navy (IJN) slipped into "iron bottom sound" near Savo Island and completely surprised an Allied cruiser covering force. With superior night fighting capability, long lance torpedoes and Allied confusion; Japan inflicted devastating losses on the Allied fleet. The (IJN) sank 4 Allied heavy cruisers and severally damaged a 5th. The IJN suffered minor damage. The "Battle of Savo Island," severally jolted the U.S. Navy. As a result the 1st Marine Division was left to fend for themselves with only 50% of their supplies disembarked The Japanese 17th Army (Lt. Gen. Harukichi Hyakutake) wished to follow-up the successful Savo battle with a land assault. Only 3 Japanese units were available for the upcoming assault. Of these units the famous 28th Infantry "Ichiki" Regiment (Colonel Kiyonao Ichiki) landed first. With a reinforced battalion landed, Ichiki decided to attack. In the first land battle known as "The Battle of the Tenaru" the crack 28th Infantry Regiment's battalion force lost nearly 800 men. COPY AND PASTE SELECTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH IN GOOGLE Over the following months several naval battles were fought near Lunga Point/Savo Island and out to sea. The "Battle of the Eastern Solomon's," "The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands," The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal," "The Battle of Cape Esperance," "Battle of Tassafaronga" along with air attacks on the "Tokyo express." Both sides lost 26 warships a piece. The Marines and US Army fought the Japanese in several land battles. "The Battle of Bloody Ridge," The Battle of the Matanikau," "The Battle of Mount Austen," and several smaller actions. The Japanese finally withdrew from Guadalcanal in February 1943. The victory at Guadalcanal eventually led to a succession of Allied victories up the Solomons chain. With Gen. Douglas MacArthur's brilliant New Guinea campaign, the main Japanese base at Rabaul was isolated and bi-passed. Supplies are rushed to the front as civilian evacuees stream to the rear. Mines are laid, road blocks set up, the woods are combed for Nazi paratroopers, and Yank artillery roars into action. Clear weather enables fleets of Allied bombers to disrupt Nazi communication lines with hundreds of tons of bombs. Fleets of transport planes parachute badly needed supplies to the encircled heroes who are holding Bastogne. Gen Patton's armor fights its way northward into Bastogne, the demolished city.
