Rolls-Royce RR300 Will Power New Robinson R66 Helicopter In March of 2007, Rolls Royce made it official... that they were building a "next-generation" small turbine engine for the civil helicopter market, and it had been selected to power the Robinson R66 Helo. More than "just" a follow-on to the highly-regarded Allison/Rolls 250, the 215 pound Rolls-Royce RR300 is rated at 300shp. According to RR, the new RR300 engine represents a 'major step forward' in the helicopter industry by providing 300 shaft horsepower at takeoff, excellent hot and high performance and outstanding value. The RR300 makes Rolls-Royce turbine power available in the lower shp range. The engine is first destined for installation in future production Robinson R66 helos. The new R66 five-seater is Robinson Helicopter Company s first venture into gas turbine-powered rotorcraft and will complement the company s existing line of piston-powered aircraft -- which have been the best selling helos in the business for many years. Rolls-Royce received FAA type certification last year with full-rate production now underway and trhe first production engine shipped to RHC last march. Under the agreement with Robinson Helicopter, Rolls-Royce will provide several hundred RR300 engines in upcoming years. A prototype RR300 engine has been flying on a Robinson helicopter prototype since mid-2007. Key attributes of the RR300 reportedly include: lower acquisition and operating costs; low-weight, compact design; improved specific fuel consumption; an embedded engine monitoring system; and an optional, through-life, peace-of-mind maintenance program. The previous Model 250 line has produced nearly 30,000 engines, with approximately 16,000 currently in service worldwide in a wide range of aircraft styles. In addition to orders with Robinson Helicopters, Rolls-Royce also signed Memoranda of Understanding with Enstrom Helicopters, Schweizer Aircraft and MD Helicopters to evaluate future applications of the new RR300 engine family. Vern Offers Some Additional Background On The Eclipse 400 and 500 Programs Yup... it sure seems like its jet week all of a sudden. This time, though, we head back to get some more details on THE OTHER new single engine jet... the recently announced Eclipse 400, as well as recent decisions affecting the Eclipse 500 program. ANN's Aero-TV crew caught up with Vern Raburn right after he gave the public go-ahead for the E400 and engaged in some frank discussion in Part Two of a chat with the Eclipse Boss. It was just a little over a month ago that Raburn told ANN that he was "thrilled" to have the opportunity to introduce a new aircraft to the Eclipse Aviation family the Eclipse 400 single-engine jet, the production version of the Eclipse Concept Jet (ECJ), which was first revealed at EAA AirVenture 2007 and profiled exclusively by Aero-TV. After completing 10 months of extensive research on the ECJ, Eclipse claimed that they were "confident this is the perfect aircraft for the emerging single-engine jet market. As many of you have experienced firsthand, this jet inspires people. It immediately captures their imaginations, and when they look a little closer and begin to grasp the level of performance and value it delivers they are truly blown away." Previous Eclipse customers were the first allowed to place deposits on the 1.35 million dollar Eclipse 400. Public deposits will be accepted starting at EAA AirVenture 2008. The Eclipse 400 will be powered by a Pratt making it the world s most fuel-efficient jet aircraft. It seats four and cruises at 41,000 feet, nearly four miles above its closest 'competition.' It will also feature the most sophisticated flight deck and complete aircraft integration available in general aviation. The Eclipse 400 is priced at $1.35 million in June 2008 economics. American Airlines announced plans to phase out 209 jobs at major Texas airports, including letting go 158 workers at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The nation's largest airline told the Texas Workforce Commission on Tuesday that soaring fuel costs and a weakening economy have forced it to reduce jobs. Prior to Tuesday’s announcement, American sent letters to their 900 flight attendants informing them that their jobs could be gone as soon as Aug. 31.
