2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.CARE was part of the celebrations in Berlin. Working with the Berlin Air Service CARE organised a candy drop in memory of the candy dropped into the blockaded city 60 years ago. CARE was the only aid organisation flying in CARE-packages with their own chartered planes. More than 200,000 of the CARE-packages, which became famous in Germany and a synonym for humanitarian aid, were brought to the starving Berliners. As part of the celebrations in Berlin CARE dropped over 700 packages of sweets to the crowds watching the recreated air display. Distributed by Tubemogul.

BORICHA, Ethiopia, 28 May 2009 Every week, mothers from the drought-affected villages of Ethiopias Boricha district bring their children to be weighed and measured at the Yirba Health Centre. Health extension workers weigh and measure the mid-upper arm circumference, or MUAC, of the children after which they will receive their weekly ration of the ready-to-use therapeutic food Plumpynut, supplied by UNICEF with the support of the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department, also known as ECHO. In 2008, ECHO provided 3.3 million towards UNICEFs emergency nutrition response in Ethiopia. The funds helped purchase 697 tonnes of Plumpynut for approximately 70,000 children in the southern part of the country. Plumpynut is popular with small children such as Mare because it tastes good, like a sweeter version of peanut butter. The energy-rich paste contains the right balance of proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals to treat severe malnutrition. It can even be administered at home, as long as children do not have additional medical complications or serious illness. This year, UNICEF has appealed for $36 million to address overall emergency requirements in Ethiopia including health, water, sanitation, hygiene, education and child protection with $20 million needed for the nutrition response alone. ELDORET, Kenya, 14 May 2009 Grace Githinji has a small garden in Eldoret, in central Kenya, where she grows cabbages, kale and corn. This is the region that produces most of Kenyas food, and her crops are thriving in the rich red soil. The tranquillity of her life today is a far cry from the horror she experienced when inter-tribal violence raced across the country in January 2008, following a disputed presidential election. Hundreds were killed and tens of thousands were made homeless. Her home and her shop where she sells her produce were burned down during the conflicts. With nowhere else to stay, she had to move into a displacement camp in the Eldoret showgrounds. UNICEF helped to establish the camp with funds from the European Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO). LOKICHOGGIO, Kenya, 17 April 2009 Life is a constant struggle for the nomadic Turkana people of northern Kenya. This remote, vast and impoverished region has suffered severely from drought in recent years. VIDEO: Watch now In response, UNICEF is working with the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department, also known as ECHO, to alleviate the toll that drought takes on an already fragile people. ECHO support ensures that UNICEF has the most up-to-date information about the areas of greatest need in the region and can respond quickly and effectively when new crises arise such as the severe drought of 2008. "It's a moral duty" say world leaders at the international conference to rebuild Gaza

The international conference on the reconstruction of Gaza kicked off today in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak opened the conference, which was attended by over 45 foreign ministers as well as UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon and directors of regional and international organizations and funds. The Conference is also being attended by some European leaders, including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is also taking part in the conference. This is her first visit to the region since she took up her new job. Clinton was joined in Sharm el-Sheikh by the new Middle East envoy George Mitchell. She announced US aid to the Gaza Strip for an estimated $900 million dollars. She also said the Obama administration would "vigorously pursue a two state solution." She also spoke about her new role on the Middle East Quartet which she took over from former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. The Quartet is a group of four nations involved in mediating the peace process in the Israeli and Palestinian territories. The Quartet includes the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia. Three key concerns on the agenda include the absence of Israeli representatives at the Conference, how to get aid and reconstruction materials into the region with the current climate of security, and without the participation of Hamas, how rebuilding Gaza would be possible. President Sarkozy of France said it was the global community's "moral duty" to solve the crisis in Gaza. He called for 2009 as "the year of peace" for the region. "The time is now to speed up the agenda to end the crisis. We know the parameters, there is no other solution but a political solution." Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he hoped the Italian government, when hosting the G-14 meeting in July in Italy, could form a Marshall Plan to give needed assistance to the region as well as develop a strategy to "boost tourism for Christians and Muslims by building an airport to receive tourists wishing to visit the holy lands including Bethlehem ." Secretary-General Moussa from the League of Arab States underscored the need to move away from dialogue that labeled a people under occupation as "terrorists" and that the focus must first be put on assisting Palestinian refugees who have spent decades in transit. UNICEF Seeks $1 billion for children in emergencies

GENEVA, 27 January 2009 UNICEFs 2009 Humanitarian Action Report (HAR) highlights the plight of children and women around the globe in humanitarian emergencies. The Humanitarian Action Report is UNICEFs annual funding appeal for protracted emergencies and is seeking just over $1 billion to assist children and women in 36 countries. The amount sought is some 17 per cent higher than UNICEFs 2008 appeal, largely because of increased needs in eastern and southern Africa. Many countries featured in the report are silent or forgotten emergencies, said UNICEF Executive Director, Ann M. Veneman. Women and children are dying every day due to disease, poverty and hunger, but sadly their deaths go largely unnoticed. The report notes that over half the funds are to continue UNICEF support to victims of the five largest global humanitarian operations: in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
