Clooney's SAG StrategyClooney's SAG Strategy
from Cinematical
June 28, 2008

Filed under: Deals, Celebrities and Controversy, Box Office, Distribution His last movie didn't do so hot, but George Clooney's still making headlines. This time, he has spoken out about the recent split between the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. According to Variety, Clooney has decided to stay neutral where many prominent actors have taken sides, and he's urging others to take the same route. If Hollywood actors go on strike, it'll probably be SAG's fault, considering the eagerness of AFTRA to negotiate a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. AFTRA's biggest defender is Tom Hanks, while Jack Nicholson is heading up the other side. "Stories about Jack Nicholson vs. Tom Hanks only strengthen the negotiating power of the AMPTP," Clooney said in a statement. Like many actors, Clooney wants to take any measures he can to prevent a strike. As a member of SAG, the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America, he wears many hats. "I'm hoping that there might be a way out of this," he said. "To be sure, I'm not the brightest bulb out there. So maybe someone has a lot better idea." Then he got personal: "I just happen to believe so strongly in both unions... my father, my mother, aunt, uncle, even cousins were all members." Nobody's doubting his allegiance, but after souring his relationship with the WGA after Leatherheads came out, it's hard to say how the other unions will regard him in the coming months. Cloverfield comes out Ton DVD this week. Are you gonna buy it? You better! If you want to be our friend, you better! Because as you know four out of the five Who Asked You? hosts loved it! Speaking of which, if you click the image at the left it'll take you directly to our store page for Cloverfield where you can quickly purchase it for a modest amount of money. Be sure to check out all the extras on the DVD. Apparently there's some hidden Easter Eggs too! Aside from the C-Field madness, Blockbuster has put in an offer to buy Circuit City! Our expert panel will discuss the varying possibilities resulting from this purchase. Blockbuster wants to basically become the Google of electronics? Plus, we go all Entertainment Tonight on your ass with Ashlee Simpson prego news. And it's been so long I can't remember the last strike in Hollywood can you? Oh wait.... nevermind. Demanding nearly the same as the WGA, the actor's that make up both SAG and AFTRA will head to the bargaining table in hopes of cutting a deal with studio executives. We've got details about this. And when we say details, we mean a Transformer joke that will certainly have Keith retaliating with one of Cloverfield. By the way, he's the ONE host who did not like it. Finally, Dennis and Jabari will have their review of '88 Minutes' starring Al Pacino. And Dennis will offer his thoughts on 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'. Mike is on assignment this week, so it'll be just four of the Asked Crew. SHELLY PALMER probes several issues surrounding digital rights. What are your rights as Digital Citizens of the United States? Do we have a national broadband policy? What is it? What should it be? Read about digital deficiency and how it may jeopardize our status as a super power. MICROSOFT s white space device failed for a third time and now the FCC refuses to continue testing it. The device was intended to show that white space spectrum could bring Internet access to mobile devices without interfering with television signals. The tech industry is behind the initiative but Microsoft s repeated failures have not been helping the cause. YAHOO is launching Shine, a new site targeted at women in the 25 to 54 age bracket. Shine will offer content focused on parenting, relationships, food, beauty and more including exclusive content from Hearst, Rodale, Conde Nast and Time Inc. Shine will allow Yahoo sell advertising targeted directly to women, an online demographic it believes is currently under-served. It launches today. SONY will launch PIX, a linear movie channel on AT s forthcoming MediaFlo mobile TV service. PIX will feature classic movies from Columbia, TriStar, Screen Gems and Sony Classics. It will focus on familiar movies so that viewers can miss the beginning and stop watching whenever they feel like it. Sony Pictures Television will also announce a new mobile Jeopardy game for handheld users. MICROSOFT has signed a deal with Hollywood producer and talent manager Peter Safran to create original video content for the Xbox. Safran and Company will create scripted shows that run under ten minutes and focus on genres that are popular with the Xbox audience. The ad-supported shows are expected to begin this fall, starting with Xbox exclusivity before expanding into other distribution channels. A company spokesperson said the deal is the first of many. MTV NETWORKS will become the first Viacom property to embrace mobile ad-supported distribution. The network will place clips on mobile destination Mywaves. AFTRA and SAG will negotiate with the AMPTP separately. IAC won a court decision that will allow it to split into 5 companies. NEWSPAPERS saw print ad revenue drop 9.4% in 2007, the biggest decline since at least 1950. Read more at http://www.ShellyPalmer.com

THE FCC will relax local HD carriage requirements for DirecTV and DISH Network, making the terms less burdensome than those imposed on cable. The satellite operators will be allowed to down-sample local HD television signals to a lower quality, decreasing the bandwidth that the stations will occupy. Both companies claimed that they needed several years to increase capacity before they could carry all local stations in HD. They now have until 2013 before local HD requirements kick in. NBCU will sell off O s in both Miami and Hartford. The sales are part of an overall shift in NBC Local Media s strategy towards becoming local media production centers. In related news, Jeff Zucker told an Ad Age conference that Hulu is a work in progress. Zucker praised the ability to run overlay ads without fully interrupting a show and said that usage has already exceeded expectations. He expressed concern over Antigua s threat of legalizing piracy of U.S. content, calling the issue troubling. VERIZON announced that it will certify devices for its new open network policy towards the end of this year. Any device meeting unrestrictive minimum network requirements will be allowed to connect without any service contract. Users will simply log on to Verizon s site to setup an account. The move will represent a major shift in network policy for one of the top mobile operators and will be closely watched. In other Verizon news, FiOS has added a slew of VOD content from CBS, Discovery Channel and more. The service offers around 10,000 VOD titles each month. VEOH claims that studio-produced content only accounts for 15% of the views on the video-sharing site with the rest going to indie content and user-generated clips. The site is able to sell content against UGC content by carefully vetting it and removing overly risque material. Ad banners on Veoh go for around $10 CPMs while videos ads net $20 CPMs. RENTRAK signed a new deal with TURNER to track on-demand viewing of TBS, CNN, Cartoon Network and more. The company now collects data representing 45 million set-top boxes on 23 cable operators. Rentrak stats are used by over 90 networks and studios. ADOBE launched software that offers DRM protection for downloaded Flash files. BLU-RAY has had its protection cracked by an Antigua-based software company. AFTRA ratified a contract wit NBC and ABC covering news anchors, correspondents and reporters. CBS will allow users to create embeddable mash-ups of March Madness video highlights. You may want to check his Facebook profile before deciding.NBC UNIVERSAL will purchase 35% of web site and VOD channel DriverTV for $6 million. DriverTV creates short promotional videos for major car makers, profiting from video production and receiving money each time a video is viewed. It will create synergy between DriverTV and NBC U properties, using the car-related videos on NBC.com and directing visitors to DriverTV.com.CISCO announced that it will embed peer-2-peer software from GRID NETWORKS in its home-networking products, after recently revealing that it was a major investor in the company. In related news, Cisco has completed its plans to phase out the Scientific Atlanta brand, replacing all SA-labeled products with the Cisco name.MICROSOFT will purchase RAPT, a provider of online ad management systems. Microsoft had formerly used Rapt for ad management on MSN and the arrangement produced a 15% to 20% increase in ad revenue. In related news, Microsoft and Yahoo executives finally met last week to discuss the details of Microsoft s standing buyout offer. The meeting was the first sign of progress in an otherwise stalled deal with Yahoo having rejected the bid and Microsoft vowing not to increase it.YAHOO is creating major buzz with its new DIGG-like service. Yahoo Buzz allows users to vote on top third-party stories and adds the cream of the crop to Yahoo s front page. This is translating into some major traffic spikes for top web sites. About 1 million visitors have clicked through for each article.SAG and AFTRA are at odds again, this time over basic cable. SAG suggested it may want to include basic cable in the prime-time negotiations with the AMPTP, prompting AFTRA to accuse the Guild of intentionally distracting the focus from the prime-time issues. SAG believes that Phase One, an agreement between the two unions, covers collective bargaining for basic cable. AFTRA wants basic cable to remain a separate negotiation and issued a letter threatening to enter solo talks with the AMPTP. The soap opera continues.Read more at http://www.ShellyPalmer.com

HULU will officially launch on Wednesday, offering full-length episodes of 250 television series, 100 feature-length films and some of the top online video content. The News Corp - NBC U venture has gone all-out, adding new programming from Lionsgate, Warner Bros. TV Group, the NBA, the NHL, the Onion News Network and more. Of course, this is all added to its huge beta selection of content from Fox, NBC and more. Hulu has a lot of high-quality programming. The site will also blaze new trails in advertising by offering two unique ad formats. One will allow viewers to choose between multiple ads. The other will offer viewers a commercial-free show if they agree to watch a 2 and a half minute movie trailer. Since entering beta the site has already shown signs of being a success, growing to 5 million monthly viewers and having its content embedded in over 5,000 sites. Hulu is a major experiment and the long-awaited network reaction to YouTube. If you haven t tried Hulu during the beta period, log on to Hulu.com this Wednesday to give it a shot.LIONSGATE will begin including iPod-ready digital copies of films released on DVD and Blu-ray, starting with the May 27 release of Rambo. Fox initially kicked off the digital-copy concept last November with the release of Live Free or Die Hard. The number of digital copies actually activated so far has been small but the studios see the option as protection against piracy and a way to maintain DVD sales as viewers increasingly demand portable media.DISNEY expects to generate $1 billion in revenue from online content this fiscal year according to CEO Bob Iger. That would be about 3% of company revenue, based on 2007 numbers. Disney has been very aggressive at embracing the shift to online content, selling shows and movies on iTunes, streaming TV episodes on ABC.com and even purchasing social-networking site Club Penguin. The forward-thinking approach has clearly paid off and puts Disney in a good position as more viewers shift to new media.AFTRA has reached a tentative deal with producers covering daytime serials, talk shows and game shows.
