From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
One Of The World's Most Recognizable Aircraft Plays In The Skies Above Oshkosh At the recently concluded Oshkosh 2008 aerial extravaganza, ANN and Aero-TV, yet again, got to play with the Goodyear Blimp. We admit it... we love the big monster gas bag and we thought an update and additional look at this amazing and gentle flyer was worth a second look from Aero-TV. For 80 years, Goodyear tells ANN that their 'blimps have adorned the skies as very visible corporate symbols of the tire and rubber company that began operations in 1898.' Today, these graceful giants travel more than 100,000 miles across the United States per year as Goodyear's "Aerial Ambassadors." The blimp tradition began in 1925 when Goodyear built its first helium-filled public relations airship, the Pilgrim. The tire company painted its name on the side and began barnstorming the United States. Humble beginnings to an illustrious history. Over the years, Goodyear built more than 300 airships, more than any other company in the world. Akron, Ohio, the company's world headquarters, was the center of blimp manufacturing for several decades. During World War II many of the Goodyear-built airships provided the U.S. Navy with a unique aerial surveillance capability. Often used as convoy escorts, the blimps were able to look down on the ocean surface and spot a rising submarine and radio its position to the convoy's surface ships... in essence acting as an early warning system. Modern surveillance technology eventually eclipsed the advantages of the airship fleet, and in 1962 the Navy discontinued the program. Today, The Goodyear Tire the Spirit of America, based in Carson, California; and the Spirit of Innovation, in Pompano Beach, Florida. From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
A Vital Topic... Deserving Of NASA's Attention (and YOURS) Late last year, ANN's Aero-TV crews spied a truly marvelous piece of flight simulation technology... NASA Glenn's icing flight training simulator. Demonstrated at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), we were incredibly impressed at the apparent accuracy of the model (ANN's Jim Campbell has plenty of Twin Otter time -- the aircraft used in the icing encounter sim model -- and knows only too well that the icing behavior they displayed is what he has experienced, personally, in real icing conditions). The high-fidelity simulation model for icing effects flight training was developed from wind tunnel data for the DeHavilland DHC-6 Twin Otter aircraft. First, a flight model of the un-iced airplane was developed and then modifications were generated to model the icing conditions. The models were validated against data records from the NASA Twin Otter Icing Research flight test program with only minimal refinements being required. The goals of this program were to demonstrate the effectiveness of such a simulator for training pilots to recognize and recover from icing situations and to establish a process for modeling icing effects to be used for future training devices. NASA notes that 'Developing flight simulators that incorporate the aerodynamic effects of icing will provide a critical element in pilot training programs by giving pilots a pre-exposure of icing-related hazards, such as ice-contaminated roll upset or tailplane stall. Integrating these effects into training flight simulators will provide an accurate representation of scenarios to develop pilot skills in unusual attitudes and loss-of-control events that may result from airframe icing.' ANN first saw this technology demonstrated at I/ITSEC, an organization that promotes cooperation among the Armed Services, Industry, Academia and various Government agencies in pursuit of improved training and education programs, identification of common training issues and development of multiservice programs. The 2008 rendition of this event comes this December 1-4, 2008. From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
Cautious Optimism Remains The Watchword For A Show Almost As Popular As 2007's This is Aero-TV's final daily update from the floor of the National Business Aviation Association's 61st Annual Meeting & Convention. Among the highlights Tuesday, Jim Bass, President of Piper Aircraft announced that, against declining industry-wide sales of piston aircraft, Piper's piston sales are up this year. We caught up with Nicolas Chabbert from EADS Socata for an update... including word on the company's next aircraft project. Hawker Beechcraft announced its own foray into a new market... with a $200 million order from its dealership in Brazil, the backyard of rival Embraer... Monday's Very Light Jet forum got a status report on the segment from four manufacturers in varying stages of VLJ development. Training and electronics leader Jeppesen signed the first of what might lead to many agreements with French planemaker Dassault Falcon, to distribute the Jeppesen's electronic flight bag software to Falcon jet customers One company making headlines on a variety of topics at NBAA is Cessna... but the company's news wasn't confined solely to its new Columbus jet. CEO Jack Pelton filled us on what else is happening at Cessna. Sunday morning Jack Pelton had an update on Cessna's 2008 details for Aero-TV. Monday afternoon Harrison Ford was on hand to participate in the announcement of the Cessna Citation Special Olympics Airlift. And finally... not all the activity on the show floor at NBAA 2008 had to do with flashy business aircraft and new gadgets. Aero-TV had the chance to speak with Amanda Wright Lane, the great-grand-niece of aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright... in front of the newest flying replica of an original 1910 Wright Model "B". Some might call this the first business aircraft... This wraps up our Aero-TV coverage of the NBAA 2008 Convention. For more details on these stories and a whole lot more, be sure to check out ANN's online event coverage. From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
The G1000 And PW's Finest Make This An Exceptional Way To Travel It would be hard to improve on a such an impressive performer as the TBM 850 single-engine turboprop... but that said, if there was one area the previous generation aircraft came up lacking, it was in cockpit integration. That concern has been nicely addressed by EADS Socata for 2008, with a simple one-word explanation: Garmin. After working our way on a warm day at 308-310 kts at FL260, with th best of Garmin keeping things VERY manageable, we have to tell you that the TBM 850 has it RIGHT. Upgrades to the latest TBM 850 variant includes its Integrated All-Glass Flight Deck, based on the last-generation Garmin G1000 system -- which replaces traditional instruments with large liquid crystal display (LCD) screens. It integrates primary flight, navigation, weather, traffic, ground proximity and technical information on the aircraft, fully associated with a digital autopilot. This reduces pilot workload and eases maintenance, and brings the TBM 850 truly into the realm of the world s most advanced light business aircraft. In addition, the TBM 850 s environmental and vapor control system has been replaced by the Global Air Control System, which is more efficient and offers a dual zone temperature control. EADS Socata also made some oft-requested improvements to the TBM 850's cabin. The aircraft s interior has been entirely redesigned to offer more space and comfort, with a two-inch width increase and a one-inch ceiling rise. The changes also serve to reduce airframe weight, increasing the TBM 850 s useful load by 110 lbs. Fuel tank capacity is boosted by 11 gallons, benefiting from a transfer in the fuel cap position. Maximum range increases from 1,330 nm to 1,410 nm at the maximum recommended cruise of 320 knots. Developed in response to customer feedback, the TBM 850 s 2008 model has already achieved success in the market. Introduced to EADS Socata s most faithful customers during the past several months, it has received a warm welcome -- and the 60 aircraft allocated for production in 2008 already have been sold. The new G1000-equipped TBM 850 is the result of our attention to customers. explained Nicolas Chabbert, EADS Socata Vice President, and the head of Sales Thanks to our sales success, we can now accept orders for deliveries mid-2009. From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
The News Keeps Soaring At NBAA2008.... Despite the turmoil outside trhe sunshine state, the business avaion indsutry is still doing Business... and lots of it. NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen welcomed Attendees of the NBAA 61st Annual Meeting lez, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) president, along with Ron Kaplan, executive director of the National Aviation Association Hall of Fame, who announced this year's recipient of the Combs-Gates Award. To underscore the increasing international presence of business aviation, NBAA invited Kobeh to give this year's keynote address. The engineer, professor and former deputy general has served as ICAO's president since 2006. "It is a great pleasure for me to address this Opening Session, and to take part in the largest and most important civil aviation event," said Kobeh. His address focused on several key issues facing the business aviation community including safety, security, airspace management and environmental concerns. Kobeh commended the excellent safety record of business aviation and advocated for "workable security measures that will not compromise operations, and will help achieve secure air transportation in an intelligent and practical way." He also championed the use of "NextGen" toward maximizing efficient use of the airspace system, and noted that global aviation accounts for two percent of total emissions, with aircraft now 70 percent more fuel efficient than thirty years ago. Kobeh emphasized the aggressive work that the aviation community continues to pursue in maintaining minimal environmental impact, describing a plan of environmental action to be submitted to the 2009 meeting of the United Nations to revise the Post-Kyoto Agreement. Also at the session, Executive Director of the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) Ron Kaplan announced the recipient of the 6th annual Combs-Gates Award, which is intended to spur the research and preservation of the nation's aviation heritage, supporting projects that document the value of the aviation industry to the world. The NAHF was established in Dayton, OH, in 1962, to honor individuals who have made important contributions to the industry and its heritage. Presented by NAHF enshrinee Colonel Joe Kittinger, this year's recipient of the $20,000 award is the First Flight Foundation of Kitty Hawk, NC. First Flight Foundation was selected in recognition of its work to resurrect and restore the Wright Brothers National Memorial Monument, a costly six-month project. President John Harris and Executive Director Lola Hilton accepted the award on behalf of the foundation. "May the memorial be a beacon of light to all who dream of flight," Harris said in his acceptance speech. In a special advance announcement, Ron Kaplan revealed that, during the NAHF's next annual enshrinement ceremony in June, Cessna's Russell W. Meyer, Jr. will be officially enshrined into the NAHF, in recognition of Meyer's historic contributions to the industry. The session concluded with a ribbon cutting to open the Convention by Federal Aviation Administration Acting Administrator Bobby Sturgell, who thanked NBAA for inviting him to participate in the show, and said he was pleased to be a part of the event. In addition to this, Aero-TV covers the following news items in this program... Adam Aircraft Acquisition: Jack Braly, President/CEO, AAI Acquisition Inc. With the recent acquisition of Adam Aircraft Jack Braly was on hand after their morning press conference to answer a few questions. Ron Lueck: Owner/CEO Comp Air Aviation Ron Lueck was on hand to discuss the new and upcoming airplanes from Comp Air, starting with the most recent Comp Air 9 and continuing on to the Comp Air 12. Bombardier: David Coleal, VP and GM, Learjet Business Aircraft With Bombardier's announcement of the Learjet 85 being built in Mexico, Aero-TV had a few questions for David Coleal after their NBAA press conference. Cessna Columbus Buyer Preview: Jack Pelton, CEO - Cessna Aircraft Company Cessna opened up the Columbus mock up at their booth a few hours early for the customers with deposits on the airplane to take a look at the interior before it was open to the public. The Columbus remains on schedule and appears to be taking the aero-world by storm... Wichita Aero-Club: Dave Franson, Executive Director of Wichita Aero Club A consortium of business, government and educational organizations in the greater Wichita, Kansas area are joining together to form the Wichita Aero Club. The club has been patterned after the Aero Clubs of Washington, Atlanta and The Wings Club in New York, Dave Franson offered Aero-TV some insights on the future of the club. Corporate Angel Network Bets Big Bucks... Courtesy of NBAA Representatives from the Corporate Angel Network were on hand to accept a donation from Ed Bolen of NBAA to help support the life changing efforts of their organization. Ed Bolen was on hand afterwards to speak on behalf of NBAA. This wraps up our Aero-TV coverage of the Second day of NBAA 2008.
Aero-TV: Learning The Truth About The MU-2 SFAR

 From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
Let's Talk About The MU-2 With An Expert... ANN has always found the controversy over the airworthiness of the MU-2 an argument of political hype over reality. Much maligned over a number of highly visible accidents (often hyped by some politicos with an aviation-ignorant agenda), the truth of the matter is that the MU-2 is a hell of an airplane... and PROPERLY trained and flown, this is a serious working airplane. To separate the "Bravo Sierra" from the reality of the matter, ANN and Aero-TV interviewed and flew with MU-2 expert Pat Cannon to detail the TRUE nature of this airplane and the community that has grown around it... especially in light of the recent SFAR actions. After receiving numerous comments from both private and commercial operators of the Mitsubishi MU-2 turboprop -- as well as owner representatives, and the plane's manufacturer -- the FAA has gone forward with its call for a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) calling for new pilot training, experience, and operating requirements for the speedy aircraft. The final rule mandates a comprehensive standardized pilot training program for the MU-2. The regulation requires use of a standardized cockpit checklist and the latest revision of the Airplane Flight Manual. MU-2 operators also must have a working autopilot onboard except in certain limited circumstances. Owners and operators must comply with the SFAR within a year. The FAA's requirements follow an increased accident and incident rate in the MU-b over the past four years, and are based on a safety evaluation of the MU-2 conducted by the agency since July 2005. This SFAR mandates additional training, experience, and operating requirements to improve the level of operational safety for the MU-2. "The FAA studies enormous amounts of data looking for trends," said FAA Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety Nick Sabatini. "When we saw the rising accident rate for the MU-2, we decided to take appropriate actions to bring the plane up to an acceptable level of safety." In its original Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, the FAA proposed new requirements for ground and flight training that would apply to all persons who manipulate the controls or act as pilot-in-command (PIC) of the MU-2. The proposed SFAR also would apply to those persons who provide pilot training for the Mitsubishi MU-2. Operational requirements -- including a requirement for a functioning autopilot for single pilot instrument flight rules (IFR) and night visual flight rules (VFR) operations, a requirement to obtain and carry a copy of the latest available revision of the airplane flight manual, and a requirement to use a new pilot checklist were part of the proposal -- where included in the NPRM, building on the current MU-2 requirements as spelled out in 14 CFR parts 61, 91, and 135. The FAA proposed that all training conducted in the Mitsubishi MU-2 be done using the standardized Mitsubishi Heavy Industries training program and a checklist accepted by the FAA's MU-2 FSB. The requirements called for by the FAA fall short of a type-rating standard, which some have called for the MU-2 to have due to its unique operational characteristics compared to other multi-engine turboprops. From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
The News Starts Early Here At NBAA.... Welcome to Orlando, Florida... home to this year's National Business Aviation Association Conference and Trade Show. These are some of the recent NBAA show headlines for Monday, October Sixth, 2008. There's no denying these are different times in the world of business aviation... just as these are difficult times for the world at large. In stark contrast to the festive atmosphere seen over the past three years at NBAA, the news from the first day of this year's event was subdued by comparison, yet still cautiously optimistic... a tone NBAA President Ed Bolen says reflects a general uneasiness of the today's marketplace... Continuing a somewhat-quirky NBAA tradition, Sunday's 'sneak-peak' press conference schedule was jam-packed with companies hoping to get their announcements out ahead of the show's formal opening ceremonies on Monday. Gulfstream was among the first to show their hand, announcing its new G250 "super mid-size" jet. Based on the existing G200 -- itself a variant of the old IAI Astra -- the G250 appears aimed at soothing those naysayers who may quibble over whether the aircraft is a "true" Gulfstream product... While Dassault Falcon didn't have a brand-new plane to announce, the company did reveal its plans for an upgrade package to its popular EASy flight deck, including a new synthetic vision option. But Dassault's Olivier Villa spent most of his time talking about the recently-introduced 900LX... telling attendees the aircraft will build on Dassault's already-impressive lineup of fuel-efficient business aircraft when it enters the market in mid-2010... Embraer's Lu s Carlos Affonso provided an update on the Brazilian planemaker's rapidly-expanding line of business aircraft. Starting with just one offering when Embraer launched its "executive jets" line in 2005, today the company has five new business jets in various stages of development, and a sixth in production. Embraer expects to win certification for its smallest Phenom 100 very-light jet -- and its largest plane, the Embraer-190-based Lineage 1000 -- within coming weeks. Affonso also weighed in on the current state of the global economy... and how Embraer expects those declining fortunes to affect the market for high-dollar business aircraft. He told attendees deliveries over the next two years should be healthy, as supply catches up with demand -- but after that, the market may endure a three-year reversal in fortunes until it rebounds... And finally... Cessna provided an inspiring conclusion to the day's events in Orlando, with the announcement of the company's sixth annual Citation Special Olympics Airlift Program, to help athletes travel to the 2010 USA National Games to be held near Lincoln, Nebraska. This will be the sixth time Cessna has organized the extensive airlift campaign to benefit Special Olympics... and for 2010, athletes may have the opportunity to fly with Han Solo himself! This wraps up our Aero-TV coverage of the first day of NBAA 2008. From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
A VERY Close Look At Piper's Most Exciting Aircraft Program Yet ANN had extensive access to the exciting new PiperJet just a few days ago... inside, outside and in the air! Piper's most aggressive new airplane program, the FJ44-powered PiperJet is set to make aviation history as one of the new generation of high-performance single-engine jets that is setting the aviation world abuzz. ANN broke the news, worldwide, of the first flight of the PiperJet during Oshkosh 2008. The new aircraft, the first pure, jet-powered, turbofan design in the company's 71-year history, made its first flight at 11:11 AM, July 30th, from Piper Headquarters in Vero Beach, Fla. Piper was ebullient over this new development... "Today marks the beginning of a new era for Piper Aircraft as the company literally takes flight into a whole new realm of performance, luxury and capability," said Piper President & CEO James K. Bass. "With this major milestone in the PiperJet's development, we are witnessing our future - one that is built on a strong and lasting heritage and reputation for innovation and excellence." The PiperJet flew for one hour, reaching a maximum altitude of 10,000 feet and a speed of 160 KTAS as per the flight test plan. Piper Test Pilots Dave Schwartz and Buddy Sessoms were at the controls. The PiperJet incorporates many new design features, and the first flight was focused on taking an early look at basic handling characteristics, the effects on pitch trim with power changes, and basic operation of the engine's FADEC control system. "The PiperJet exhibited excellent control response around all three axes," said Schwartz. "The ergonomics and the basic operation of the side stick control were excellent, with well-balanced and harmonized control inputs required for the air speeds that we tested. Moreover, the expected level of pitch trim change with power applications was minimal and easy to overcome." The PiperJet is powered by a single Williams FJ44-3AP engine rated at 3,000 pounds of thrust. In the PiperJet application, the engine is de-rated to approximately 2,400 pounds of thrust. "The FADEC control on the Williams engine greatly reduces pilot workload, allowing greater focus on controlling and navigating the PiperJet," said Schwartz. "Pushing the single power level full forward for takeoff results in a smooth but rapid buildup of thrust and acceleration." With completion of first flight, the PiperJet began a 50 hour initial flight test program to expand the envelope and further investigate the aerodynamic configuration and basic flight performance -- now successfully completed and logged as PiperJet works its way past the 60 hour mark. The six passenger PiperJet - with an option for either a seventh seat or enclosable lavatory - offers a range of 1,300 nautical miles and a full-fuel payload of 800 lbs. Built using state-of-the-art design and manufacturing processes, the PiperJet will feature the latest in integrated glass avionics, a luxurious interior and advanced manufacturing techniques pioneered by Piper. Pricing is quoted as $2.199M (in 2006 USD with a CPI-W escalator). Deliveries are anticipated to begin in 2011. Focusing on the latest in ergonomic automobile design, the PiperJet will provide passengers with an interior that synthesizes a sophisticated color palette with a spacious, energetic design. A wealth of features, from rich leather seats, deep zebra wood details and rich fabrics and trim to perfectly placed storage, cup holders and docking stations for personal electronics, the PiperJet is equally attentive to pilot and passenger comfort and needs, reduced workload and ease of operation. Piper has selected Garmin International, Inc. to provide the avionics suite for the PiperJet. From Flight Into Known Icing (FIKI) to FADEC, Piper states that 'PiperJet's focus is on optimal operational excellence, user-friendliness, and safety.' From : TheMainstreamMedia - recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
Cool: A KC-10 Flight Engineer Explains Life Aboard A Multi-Mission Tanker One of the highlights of the 2008 Oshkosh Fly-In was the chance to get up close and personal with all manner of military aircraft -- the same birds that can be called upon at a moment's notice to serve and protect this nation... While the fighters get most of the glory and the bombers get some notice here and there, rarely do we here about the tankers. Take the KC-10 for instance... According to the US Air Force, the KC-10 'Extender' is an Air Mobility Command advanced tanker and cargo aircraft designed to provide increased global mobility for US armed forces. Although the KC-10's primary mission is aerial refueling, it can combine the tasks of a tanker and cargo aircraft by refueling fighters and simultaneously carry the fighter support personnel and equipment on overseas deployments. The KC-10 is also capable of transporting litter and ambulatory patients using patient support pallets during aeromedical evacuations. The KC-10 can transport up to 75 people and nearly 170,000 pounds of cargo a distance of about 4,400 miles unrefueled. In addition to the three main DC-10 wing fuel tanks, the KC-10 has three large fuel tanks under the cargo floor, one under the forward lower cargo compartment, one in the center wing area and one under the rear compartment. Combined, the capacity of the six tanks carry more than 356,000 pounds of fuel - almost twice as much as the KC-135 Stratotanker. Using either an advanced aerial refueling boom, or a hose and drogue centerline refueling system, the KC-10 can refuel a wide variety of US and allied military aircraft within the same mission. The aircraft is equipped with lighting for night operations. The KC-10's boom operator controls refueling operations through a digital, fly-by wire system. Sitting in the rear of the aircraft, the operator can see the receiver aircraft through a wide window. During boom refueling operations, fuel is transferred to the receiver at a maximum rate of 1,100 gallons (4,180 liters) per minute; the hose and drogue refueling maximum rate is 470 gallons per minute. The Automatic Load Alleviation System and Independent Disconnect System greatly enhances safety and facilitates air refueling. The KC-10 can be air-refueled by a KC-135 or another KC-10A to increase its delivery range. The large cargo-loading door can accept most air forces' fighter unit support equipment. Powered rollers and winches inside the cargo compartment permit moving heavy loads. The cargo compartment can accommodate loads ranging from 27 pallets to a mix of 17 pallets and 75 passengers. Since Sept. 11, 2001, KC-10s have played a prominent role in the on-going Global War on Terrorism. The KC-10 has flown more than 350 missions guarding U.S. skies as a part of Operation Noble Eagle. During operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, KC-10s have flown more than 1,390 missions delivering critical air refueling support to numerous joint and coalition receiver aircraft.
