Mighty Mite: The Rolls Royce RR300
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 24, 2008
Rolls-Royce RR300 Will Power New Robinson R66 Helicopter In March of 2007, Rolls Royce made it official... that they were building a "next-generation" small turbine engine for the civil helicopter market, and it had been selected to power the Robinson R66 Helo. More than "just" a follow-on to the highly-regarded Allison/Rolls 250, the 215 pound Rolls-Royce RR300 is rated at 300shp. According to RR, the new RR300 engine represents a 'major step forward' in the helicopter industry by providing 300 shaft horsepower at takeoff, excellent hot and high performance and outstanding value. The RR300 makes Rolls-Royce turbine power available in the lower shp range. The engine is first destined for installation in future production Robinson R66 helos. The new R66 five-seater is Robinson Helicopter Company s first venture into gas turbine-powered rotorcraft and will complement the company s existing line of piston-powered aircraft -- which have been the best selling helos in the business for many years. Rolls-Royce received FAA type certification last year with full-rate production now underway and trhe first production engine shipped to RHC last march. Under the agreement with Robinson Helicopter, Rolls-Royce will provide several hundred RR300 engines in upcoming years. A prototype RR300 engine has been flying on a Robinson helicopter prototype since mid-2007. Key attributes of the RR300 reportedly include: lower acquisition and operating costs; low-weight, compact design; improved specific fuel consumption; an embedded engine monitoring system; and an optional, through-life, peace-of-mind maintenance program. The previous Model 250 line has produced nearly 30,000 engines, with approximately 16,000 currently in service worldwide in a wide range of aircraft styles. In addition to orders with Robinson Helicopters, Rolls-Royce also signed Memoranda of Understanding with Enstrom Helicopters, Schweizer Aircraft and MD Helicopters to evaluate future applications of the new RR300 engine family. ALL Things Robinson: RHC's Founder Talks About The Future (Part 2)
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 23, 2008
Frank Talks About The Future of The R44, Helo Training, The Silver State Fiasco, And More! Life has been good for Frank Robinson and the R22/44/66 family. After years of building expertise throughout the helicopter industry, Frank Robinson set out several decades ago to do what they said could not be done... create a powerful new civil helicopter company. He did it... and probably did so beyond even his own imaginings. For example, as 2007 was coming to a close, the folks at Robinson Helicopter Company achieved another milestone when their 8000th helicopter was flight certified. The new, solid green, Robinson R44 Raven II S/N 11984 was ordered by SkySales Aviation (Christchurch, New Zealand) for a private owner. In the past few months, RHC played host to a visit by President Bush... no doubt attracted by RHC's exceptional overseas helicopter sales... making them a major aerospace exporter and a great place to do a little 'politicking.' In RHC, White House staffers chose an appropriate location for President Bush to hawk the benefits of foreign trade since Robinson Helicopters sells 70 percent of its production overseas. A point hammered home by the President. "You can't tell the people at Robinson Helicopter that trade isn't good," Bush said Wednesday. "When 70% of that which you manufacture gets sold somewhere else other than the United States, they ought to have a sign walking in here and say, 'Trade is not only good, it is great; and we want the federal government to make it easier for us to sell products.'" Better yet, work continues on Frank's next design... the Rolls Royce RR300 powered turbine helicopter...a first for RHC. Robinson Helicopter Company was founded in 1973. The first R22 was delivered in October 1979. In 1993, the R44 came online and is now the best selling helicopter in the world. The R44 is offered in two models: The Raven I and the more powerful Raven II. The Raven II is available in four specialty configurations: Police Helicopter, Newscopter, Clipper, and IFR Trainer. Robinson Helicopter Company is the world s leading manufacturer of civil helicopters. Aero-TV: Take Your Pooch Flying With Mutt Muffs!
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 17, 2008
An Aero-Canine Hearing Protection System That Your Pooch Will Love Mutt Muffs... a silly idea at first glance, seems not so silly if you have any affection for the canine side of the world. Since ANN became the home to a new German Shepherd puppy a few months ago (named 'Anjin'), the care and feeding of a dog, especially one who has grown up on an airport and keeps trying to sneak into our airplane, has taken on new urgency... But now, hearing protection for our favorite pup has been found in the form of the aforementioned 'Mutt Muffs'. It sounds crazy at first, but bear with us... this is a cool product. The folks who dreamed up this idea claim to have been '...inspired by pilots who know the noise level of the cockpit is unsafe for man or beast.... Mutt Muffs offer hearing protection for your four-legged family members. Your dog's keenest sense is smell and number two is hearing. If you think something is loud, your dog is probably in pain. After heredity, long exposure to loud noise is the biggest contributor to deafness. Good news though... noise-induced hearing loss is different in one very important way... it can be reduced or prevented altogether.' And for those who will see this program and immediately conclude that, "My dog would never wear those...", the Mutt Muffs folks tell ANN that "you d be surprised." They explain that, "It doesn t take long for most dogs to 'compute' cause and effect. Dogs figure out very quickly that the Mutt Muffs are what is stopping the noise. Ironically, most make this determination by getting them off in flight. Usually just once. That's all the doggy evidence required to know life was happier when they were on. When adjusted properly, Mutt Muffs fit securely enough that head shaking isn t enough to get them off." And yes... they work well on cats... but we're not cat fans... so who cares (grin)? So; there you have it -- an aero-canine hearing protection system... who'da thunk it? Aero-TV Takes In An All-American Airshow... OCAS '08!
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) July 16, 2008
Beachfront Airshow Gives Summer Crowds Plenty To See The "All-American Airshow" is a wonderful concept that is as much a part of the summer experience as a day at the beach... and the OCAS '08 event -- the first of many we're told -- was a bit of both. It was Ocean City, MD s first ever airshow and was initiated to kick off the town s 2008 summer season on June 10-11, 2008, adding a new signature attraction to Ocean City s roster of annual events. Military aircraft demonstrations, low altitude flyovers and civilian aerobatic performances took place over the Ocean City beachfront from noon to 4 pm each day. The airshow was visible along the majority of the Boardwalk creating an inspiring experience for visitors while they enjoyed the hospitality of Ocean City s beach and attractions. Interactive displays and exhibits were offered to the public on the streets surrounding Show Center. The Ocean City Municipal Airport also hosted an open house in conjunction with the OC Air Show on Monday, June 9, where performing aircraft were viewed up close along with other aircraft. The first event went spectacularly well. In addition to the open house, the show boasted a Blue Angels Flyover, performances by the GEICO Skytypers, a USAF Heritage flight, USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team, USAF F-15 Eagle Demo Team, USAF Reserve Biplane, Embry Riddle Mono-plane, The Yak Attack, C-17/C-5 Flyovers, a NASA P-3 Flyover and many other major attractions... including Golden Knight landings right on the beach. Battling the heat, more than 2,500 aviation enthusiasts came out to walk the open house's flight line for a closer look at the performing aircraft as they arrived and despite some occasional hassles with ramp personnel (the ONLY low note for the entire event), spectators were also able to visit with pilots and crews. General admission was free since the show could be viewed from the beach and boardwalk, while premium viewing opportunities and club house V.I.P. chalets were available to businesses and public attendees. The outcome was obviously successful as the Ocean City folks and airshow organizer Bryan Lilley have committed to 2009's event already... be sure to check this show next year on June 6-7, 2009! This is a signature aviation event, said Lilley. The OC Air Show (is) the first major waterfront show in the Mid Atlantic region offering easy access from Baltimore, Washington DC and Philadelphia.
