The MacMahans Talk Biplanes... At Oshkosh 2008! Miss Muffet may seem like an unlikely name for a proud biplane, but if you listen to the MacMahans a bit, the name makes perfect sense. The owners of a beautiful blue and red 1941 Boeing A75N1 (PT17) Stearman, the two seat trainer bipe is powered by a Lycoming R680-4P-B4 and has received lavish care over the years from the MacMahan family. Back for its second year since a complete restoration, the proud Boeing Stearman drew admiring glances from thousands of pilots who came upon it... and devoutly wished for one just like it. While most folks know the Boeing Model 75 by the common name of "Stearman," it has worn a number of hats and been called a lot of names... (and a few of those weren't nice ones, if you learned to fly taildraggers in this bird). The US Army Air Corps designation for the A75N1 is "PT-17," the Navy designation is "N2S," and the Canadian military designation is "Kaydet." The Stearman was originally designed to serve as a trainer, and many a WWII flyer got their start in the open cockpit of this amazing aircraft. After the war, a number of Stearmans found their way into civilian use as barnstormers and crop dusters. Boeing notes that the two-seater biplane was introduced by the Stearman Aircraft Division of Boeing in Wichita, Kan., in 1934 and conducted it first flight on November 26th of that year. The A75 has fabric-covered wooden wings, single-leg landing gear and an over-built welded-steel fuselage. Only radial engines were used. Between 1936 and 1944, Boeing built 8,584 of them, in all versions, plus the equivalent of 2,000 more in spares. In addition to sales to the Navy and the Army Air Corps, the trainers were sold to Canada, China, the Philippines, Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil for both military and civilian uses. The A75 (according to Janes, though different sources spec the bird in subtly different ways), has a wing span of 32 feet, 2 inches, a length of Length: 24 feet, 10 inches and its Continental R-670 radial engine pulls 220 hp. The Stearman has an average empty weight of 1,936 lbs, a gross weight of 2,717 lbs, a range of 505 miles and a top speed of 124 mph. The Stearman cruises at a whopping 106 mph and has a service ceiling of 11,200 feet. Firebreathing, they weren't, but the bird has fun written all over it and the hundreds still in civilian hands are ample testimony of the birds great flying characteristics. Record Number of Performers Scheduled -- This Is THE Place To Be This April 18-19! As previously noted, the airshow industry, and the community that supports it, is said to be a close-knit and supportive one... and if there was ever any doubt about that, it has to disappear with the upcoming Cecil Field Airshow... a celebration of aviation that has been brought about, in large part, to help and support Alan Henley (pictured right), a much beloved member of the AeroShell Aerobatic team who suffered a paralyzing injury last year while engaged in the simple act of playing with his kids. The airshow community is rallying to the cause with incredible passion and organization. At least 35 aerobatic performers are currently committed to flying in the North Florida airshow next month (April 18-19), with the able aid of the Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA). All 35 performances are scheduled for both days, along with a number of ground and aviation static and support displays and activities, making for a feature-packed weekend that is expected to draw attendees form all over North America. The airshow schedule is packed to the gills... both in numbers as well as variety. It has everything... from skydiving to wing-walkers to military tactical demonstrations, to warbirds, to some of the best precision aerobatic pilots and planes in the world. The performers list is a veritable "Who's Who" of the airshow world. Performers include (but are not limited to) The AeroShell Aerobatic Team, the Aerostars, Corky Fornof, Dale Snodgrass, Announcer Danny Clisham, Gene Soucy and Wing-Walker Teresa Stokes, Greg Poe, Jim Peitz, John Mohr, Lee Lauderback and Stallion 51 Mustang, Glider Pilot Manfred Radius, Patty Wagstaff, Announcer Rob Reider, Sean D. Tucker and Steve s rehabilitation and medical care, but daily living expenses as well. Tickets are (a very reasonable) $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for kids twelve and under, and FREE for kids six and under. The 2009 Cecil Field Airshow will be held Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, 2009 from 1000 to 1700. Please join ANN and Aero-TV as we ALL support one of the best of our airshow family... and enjoy a few days enjoying all manner of airshow excitement. As Cool As It May Sound, The Airshow Business Is Serious Stuff During the heights of this year's ICAS Convention, we had the opportunity to spend time with the folks that make up the backbone of the modern airshow industry... the rank and file support companies that make all that wonderful stuff above look so pleasing to all of those below. One of those that caught our attention was AirSupport LLC. AirSupport is a full-service airshow and aviation event management, planning and production company, founded in 1995. The company states that their primary mission is to provide aviation event services that allow its customers to enjoy a professional, profitable and safe airshow. From air and ground operations and logistics to security, event management and sponsorship fulfillment, AirSupport claims to be bale to cover all the bases with a staff of professionals with expertise in all aspects of airshow management and production. Michael McCabe is the founder and President of AirSupport LLC. A private pilot, he attended the Florida Institute of Technology, majoring in Aviation Management. His professional career, within the aircraft service industry, includes managing several Fixed Base Operations throughout the United States. Mike also has expertise in engineering, surveying and mapping that he gained with a national aerial mapping firm. He became involved with airshows in 1986 as a volunteer for the National Warplane Museum. From 1988 to 1999 he served as the Director of Ground Operations for the museum's Wings of Eagles Airshow -- the largest warbird airshow in the US. In addition, he served on the museum s Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1994. He is also one of the featured speakers and instructors for the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Air/Ground Operations Training Seminar. At ICAS 2008, AirSupport towered over a number of the booths with the display of 'AIRCOMMAND I'... a state of the art mobile airshow support system. Purpose-built for airshow management, their mobile airshow unit is equipped with the latest in advanced interactive aviation technology. AIRCOMMAND I was designed and built in cooperation with a nationally respected technological institute and is fully networked and satellite capable. AirCommand I is a multi-purpose system that serves as the epicenter of show control. It houses the AirBoss as well as key ground and air operations managers. The AirCommand cab stands over thirteen feet tall -- affording a birds- eye view of the show line, crowd line and airspace. AirCommand s first-of-its-kind, total glass enclosure offers an incomparable 360-degree horizon-to-horizon view. Features such as these provide a level of operational ability and safety enhancement unavailable in any other system -- including fixed airport control towers. In addition to providing incomparable operational and safety support, AirCommand I serves as a show operations hub and a media staging area. A steady media platform, it provides an ideal venue for quality photography and videography, and is also equipped for state of the art sound and communications processing. AIRCOMMAND I's debut took place in 2007, with early deployments at notable events such as The Gathering of Mustangs and Legends and the Kennedy Space Center. Aero-TV Checks Out Some Airshow Perspectives With Announcer Ric Peterson
from Aero-TV Network on February 19, 2009
Duration: 590
Duration: 590
It's The Airshow Announcer That Sets The Tone For An Entire Airshow Quick... name one of the most visible (if not audible) members of an average airshow. The pilots? The Volunteers? The Concessioners? Well, how about the Announcer? Without stirring and rapid-fire narrative, even the most exciting airshow can fall flat on its posterior... So, its up to folks like the ever-so-bashful (NOT) Ric Peterson to make sure that airshow attendees are informed, educated and entertained with solid knowledge and narratives befitting the exciting world of airshow flying. ANN chatted up one of the more intriguing members of the airshow announcing community, a guy whose "day job" consists of his being a radio and television on-air talent in Montreal, Canada...but whose passion brings him to airshows all over North America. Ric brings tremendous presence to the craft of airshow narration... with 29 years ground experience as a broadcaster, 25 years as an Air Show Announcer at over 100 events, and experience as the host and writer for several television documentaries on the history of aviation. Ric has also served as a Track Announcer Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada and a Track Announcer for Molson Indy Montreal and Canadian NASCAR events. The business needs this kind of expertise at each and every show. ICAS tells us that Airshows draw large numbers of demographically attractive spectators - a well-educated, affluent group of men, women and children of all ages. More than 70 percent of the audience at an air show has had some college education. Three quarters report household income of $35,000 or more. The average spectator is just under 39 years of age, but more than 53 percent of spectators are between 30 and 50. ICAS notes that Airshows offer a consistently and historically safe environment for millions of spectators each year. Since current rules were implemented nearly 50 years ago, there has not been a single spectator fatality at a North American show an enviable safety record for any business. Let's Get The Straight Skinny On Airshow Announcing With Ric Peterson and Aero-TV! Aero-TV: More Than a Musician -- Aaron Tippin Talks Aviation
from Aero-TV Network on February 15, 2009
Duration: 490
Duration: 490
This Singing Eagle SOARS Along with being one of the gathering points for Naval Aviation; Pensacola, Florida is also the birthplace of a popular country music artist who has made aviation a big part of his life. Born Aaron Dupree Tippin, his path to aviation actually seemed more certain than his path to country music stardom. According to Aaron, aviation "actually, was my first love." While he is reported to have started playing the guitar at age ten, he also inherited a love and appreciation for all things aviation from his Dad, who had been employed as a pilot before he became a farmer. Aaron earned his tickets at an early age and was flying commercially in his late teens. Hoping to pursue a career in the airlines, it was misfortunes in that industry that turned him back to his other love, music, for some means to make a living. According to his bio, "Tippin began performing in local honky tonks in the 1970's. He competed on the TNN"s 'You Can Be A Star' TV talent contest in 1985, landed a songwriter's contract and moved to Music City in 1986. Always a focused and purposeful man, Tippin created a work routine that was Spartan in its intensity. He worked the midnight - to - dawn shift at a factory in Kentucky, commuted to music row to write songs, lifted weights late every afternoon, went to bed, got up and did the whole routine over again, day after day." Tippin performed his first Nashville night club show in 1990. It earned him a recording contract with RCA records. Before ever setting foot on tour, he was afforded the opportunity to join Bob Hope on a USO tour to Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. After Aaron came home, hits for RCA led to concert dates with such superstars as Brooks & Dunn, Reba McEntire and Hank Williams Jr. Tippin became one of the most memorable country personalities of the 90's. Success as a songwriter for others also continued as Garth Brooks, Charley Pride and Kenny Chesney recorded Tippin tunes. Tippin has since made quite an impact on the country music world... with some nine studio albums and two compilations to his credit along with five 'gold' and one 'platinum' record(s). He's had three number one hits... "There Ain't Nothin' Wrong with the Radio" in 1992, "That's as Close as I'll Get to Loving You" in 1995, and the unforgettable "Kiss This" in 2000. He has more than thirty singles on the Billboard 'Hot Country Songs' charts. Above it all, though, his love for aviation remains undeniable... and a recent initiative of his to bring his act to airshow and aviation events should find him a ready audience among folks who can appreciate this flyer's other talents. Tippin owns a Stearman, Piper Cub, a Helio-Courier and a Super Decathlon. Yup... this guy is one of us. FAA Parachute Safety: A Master Rigger Explains Updates
from Aero-TV Network on February 01, 2009
Duration: 473
Duration: 473
FAA Extends Mandatory Repack Interval To 180-Days At the ever-intriguing 2008 ICAS Convention, ANN's Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, caught up with Master Rigger, Allen Silver, to get caught up on parachute regs, technology and associated issues. Allen is a "Rigger's Rigger" and one of the most knowledgable guys in the craft. Allen Silver owns and operates Silver Parachute Sales ??s Rigging Committee, reignited discussion with the FAA in early 2005 and USPA joined to form a task group which submitted a joint petition to the FAA. Other organizations whose members use parachutes also joined the effort, including the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Soaring Society of America. Initially, the group sought an exemption from the 120-day rule, but the FAA determined that an exemption would be too broad and a rule change was more appropriate. It published its proposal for change in May 2007, as ANN reported. The FAA said in approving the change that it had received 338 comments about it during the four-month comment period; only eight commenters explicitly opposed the new rule. In justifying the extension, the FAA cited "new reliability data from the parachute industry and other sources" which indicated that modern materials and construction techniques made it safe to allow parachutes to remain packed for a longer period. "Recently acquired data from the US military, foreign aviation authorities, and parachute industry representatives suggest that the current 120-day packing interval is too short, " the FAA said. "Numerous experts asserted that modern parachute materials last longer when the packing interval is longer than 120 days and that too-frequent packing shortens the life of the materials. Those experts found the parachutes ?? porosity was affected by handling and manipulation of the parachute while being packed." The longer repack cycle is consistent with US military parachute regulations, as well as with regulations in many foreign countries. The FAA noted that it has for some time allowed many foreign skydivers visiting the US to use reserve parachutes that comply with their countries ?? regulations, "and many of those foreign parachutists ?? countries had much longer repack intervals." The FAA last addressed the repack cycle in 1978, when it increased the repack period from 60 to 120 days. In making that change, the FAA noted that modern parachutes were constructed of synthetic materials far less subject to degradation than parachutes made of silk, cotton, and other natural fabrics.
