Podcast with Iconic Female Runner, Writer

Podcast with Iconic Female Runner, Writer

from Sierra Blogging Post on October 15, 2009
Duration: 61
On this episode of Adventure Edge Radio, we feature an extraordinary woman named Kathrine Switzer, the first female to run the Boston Marathon, and Alec Wilkinson, a writer with The New Yorker. Switzer was the first woman to run the Boston Marathon with an official number. The year was 1967 and Switzer was seen by some as a threat to the all-male tradition of the Boston Marathon. The story of that historic race and what happened to Switzer as a result (a race official tried to forcibly stop her from running see photo) is the stuff of legend. We will hear it from her directly. We re also talking with Alec Wilkinson this week, a writer for The New Yorker magazine. Back in August, Wilkinson took on an assignment about the adventure sport of free diving. Free diving is where participants dive as deep as they can in the ocean while holding one single breath. We ask Wilkinson how the topic came to his attention and whether or not he aims to try it (and how long he s able to hold his breath underwater in the bathtub). Download, listen in and enjoy the latest episode of Adventure Edge Radio! Photo: Kathrine Switzer runs the Boston Marathon. As a race official (in black) tries to forcibly remove her, Switzer s boyfriend comes to her defense.

This week on Adventure Edge Radio, we re featuring interviews with survivor and author Norman Ollestad, a barefoot runner named Barefoot Ted, and a young adventurer and friend of the late Robert Gauntlett, Diego Gonzalez Jovan. Norman Ollestad is the the author of a compelling new book called Crazy for the Storm. In 1979, Ollestad just 11 years old survived a small plane crash that killed his father, his father s girlfriend and the pilot. Stranded nearly 9,000 feet up on an icy, steep mountain Ollestad made his way down to safety and 30 years later he looks back on that event and the life he had with his adventure-loving father. Barefoot Ted is a leading proponent of minimalist running and one of the wild characters that populate Christopher MacDougall s best selling new book Born to Run. Our talk with Diego Gonzalez Jovan is a follow up to the untimely death of Rob Gauntlett, National Geographic Adventure magazine s Adventurer of the year for 2008. Jovan was a former adventure buddy of Gauntlett s. When he came across our Adventure Edge Radio interview with Gauntlett the last before he died he got in touch with us, wanting to share some stories. Diego Gonzalez Jovan talks about Gauntlett and about his own inspiring adventurers, one of which has just begun.
