More than 79% of Americans feel “the most significant family or social problem facing America is the physical absence of the father from the home.” Research shows that the lack of a father in the home correlates closely with crime, educational and emotional problems, teenage pregnancy, and drug and alcohol abuse. In an effort to show dads the critical role they play in their children’s lives, the Ad Council has partnered with the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and volunteer ad agency Campbell-Ewald to create a new PSA campaign that communicates to fathers that their presence is essential to their children’s well-being. The campaign provides fathers with the information they need to become better dads.

Research shows that regardless of income level, America’s young people want to go to college and recognize that postsecondary education is a key to their future. However, despite these high aspirations, low-income and first-generation students are underrepresented on college campuses. The reasons vary, but key barriers include affordability, a lack of college-going knowledge and preparation, expectations, as well as guidance and encouragement. This campaign encourages more low-income students and their families to take the necessary steps toward postsecondary education, with effective support from parents and adult influencers (teachers, counselors, coaches). Tragically, the groups with the highest risk and incidence of stroke (elderly, African-Americans and men) are also the least knowledgeable about warning signs and risk factors. Though strokes are commonly thought to only happen to older people, the truth is that a stroke can strike people of all ages. The campaign, which began in April 2003, aims to arm the public with the knowledge that a fast reaction to stroke symptoms is critical in potentially lessening the devastating results of a stroke.

Furthermore, men are 1.5 times more likely than women to die from heart disease, cancer and chronic lower respiratory diseases. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Ad Council have launched a new PSA campaign to encourage middle-aged men to learn which potentially life-saving medical tests they need to get and when they need to get them. The lighthearted ads incorporate family as a key motivating factor for men to take a more active role in preventive health. They show that being a real man means taking care of themselves (and their health) in order to be there for their families now and in the future.

In 2005 there were an estimated 24.6 million adults age 18 or older who experienced serious psychological distress (SPD), which is highly correlated with serious mental illness. Among 18-25 year olds, the prevalence of SPD is high (18.6 % for 18-25, vs. 11.3% for all adults 18+) yet this age group shows the lowest rate of help-seeking behaviors. Further, those with mental health conditions in this age group have a high potential to minimize future disability and pursue recovery if they receive the right support and services early on. In an effort to provide these young adults with a better chance at recovery, this campaign seeks to reach adults ages 18-25 with a message of acceptance and understanding of mental illness. It hopes to encourage friends to offer their support to a friend who has been diagnosed with a mental illness.
