Vito Acconci in Conversation at Acconci Studio, New York
from - blip.tv (beta) July 01, 2008
Vito Acconci in Conversation at Acconci Studio, New York features a conversation between the artist and architect Vito Acconci and undergraduate students at the University of Pennsylvania. During the 2007-2008 academic year, students in the Halpern-Rogath Seminar in the Department of the History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania explored Vito Acconci s engagement with the experience of power, understood through the activation of specific bounded zones. These have included the page, streets in New York, a basement, galleries, and public environments. Acconci s earliest forays into the realm of architecture in the 1980s marked a major shift in his work from an emphasis on the individual body (often his own) to the social body in an urban context. At the same time, the artist s focus on architecture, the built environment, and relevant social systems has emerged as a natural extension of his earlier interests in probing idiomatic language, the boundaries of the body, and the unstable delineations between private and public spaces. Recognizing the fact that architecture has the power to control the body and the rhythms of daily life, Acconci visualizes structures that perpetuate instability and the possibility of choice on the part of the user. The projects, which are collaborative undertakings with a team of designers and architects, focus on the creation of dynamic circulation systems that bend, twist, ooze, flow, bulge, and ripple across an existing landscape or a body. The course culminated in the exhibition Power Fields: Explorations in the Work of Vito Acconci at Slought Foundation, Philadelphia.

from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 21, 2008
James Kalm slips into Soho to view the debut exhibition of Susan Hefuna s, Knowledge is Sweeter than Honey and the Fluorescent Furniture and Archival Works of Vito Acconci. The screens and drawings of Egyptian/German artist Hefuna elaborate a concept of the hidden and the unhidden, and elicit various levels of interpretation. Experimental furniture that blurs the boundaries between functionality and sculpture and archival documents of pioneering performances make up the portion of the exhibit presented by Vito Acconci, and the Acconci Studio. Featuring an interview with Vito Acconci.

Eva and Franco Mattes, Synthetic Performances
from Art - recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 05, 2008
ARTISTS SPACE November 13, 2007, 6:30-8pm Eva and Franco Mattes, Synthetic Performances (aka 0100101110101101) In Conjunction with PERFORMA07, the Second Visual Art Performance Biennial Eva and Franco Mattes aka 0100101110101101.ORG have defined Synthetic Performance as a performative action that takes place in synthetic worlds and video-games. All actions are performed by the artists through their avatars, which were constructed out of the shape and surface of their bodies. People can attend the live performances and interact with the video-game from all over the world. The performers never meet their public in person, their relation is mediated by the avatars. Their contribution to PERFORMA 07 will be the reenactment of three historical performances staged in Second Life. Eva and Franco Mattes will perform live from Artists Space; those unable to attend the live performance are invited to participate in Second Life at Odyssey (4pm SL time) Within Synthetic Performances space, matter, body and action are radically different from traditional performance art. Feelings like pain and pleasure are completely abstract, mental. The performer leaves sweat, weariness and pain to the machine. In a Synthetic Performance everything is mediated, nothing is direct, everything is artificial, nothing is natural. Eva and Franco Mattes aka 0100101110101101.ORG are a couple of restless European con-artists who use unconventional communication tactics to obtain the largest visibility with minimal effort. Past works include staging a hoax involving a completely made-up artist, ripping off the Holy See and spreading a computer virus as a work of art. Since January 2007 the Mattes have been working on a series of reenactments of historical performances in the synthetic world Second Life. So far the series includes: Chris Burden's Shoot, Vito Acconci's Seedbed, Valie Export's Tapp und Tastkino and the ongoing Joseph Beuys' 7000 Oaks.
