French Abstract Painter, born in 1919 (dec, 24th).In 1941 he was drafted into the army; his regiment was located in Montpellier, where he attended the École des Beaux-Arts. There he also became acquainted with the abstract artist Sonia Delaunay. As of 1946 he maintained a studio in Courbevoie near Paris and established contact with artists such as Domela, Picabia, Hartung and Léger. In 1987,Pierre Soulages began to work enthusiastically over a plan for creating stained-glass windows for Saint Foy of Conques. In 1994, he completed the achievement of 95 windows and 9 loopholes which respect and magnify teh roman austerity and its symbols and beckon light to enter the church. Arriving in New York in the early seventies, Little has patiently perused his vision, constructing paintings based on a few universal abstract elements. Well respected in the New York painting community, with this exhibition, the artist has garnered big shot praise from the likes of the New York Time s Pulitzer Prize winning art critic Holland Cotter, and feature articles in influential publications like the Brooklyn Rail and Art News. James Little graciously consents to a studio visit, and discusses his encaustic painting technique, the influences of Clement Greenberg and the current state of abstract painting in America.

James Kalm foregoes the bicycle to make a special road-trip to Newark New Jersey to visit the debut exhibition of German Pitre. Using the abject materials of faux fur, stuffed animals and black tar-like paint, Pitre presents work that challenges good taste while extending the classic painterly legacy. Working on a large scale and attaching objects to the canvas surface, the artist comingles the cuddly with the crappy and produces work that resonates with a pathetic awareness of unavoidable decay and enveloping entropy. James Kalm bikes to Long Island City s PS1 Contemporary Art Center for a tour of an exhibition featuring Minus Space. Begun about five years ago by the husband and wife artist team of Matthew Deleget and Rossana Martinez, Minus Space has achieved international recognition as a focus of reductivist abstraction. This show gives an overview to the various stratigies being employed by artists which derive from the formalistic and conceptual approaches encouraged by the project. Including interviews with Manfred Mohr, Simon Ingram and founding partner Matthew Deleget.
