How Easy Should It Be To Increase Taxes?
from KUOW's The Conversation October 17, 2007
Should it take a supermajority to increase taxes? Or should a simple majority, 50% plus one suffice? Next month that question will be on the ballot in two different forms. Currently it takes a supermajority of 60% to increase taxes for schools. You will have an option to make it easier to pass these taxes by lowering the threshold to a simple majority. Then there's Tim Eyman's Initiative 960. It would make it harder for the legislature or voters to approve taxes by requiring a two thirds approval. Should it be harder to increase taxes? Or easier? Also, last week Radiohead started selling its new cd on-line for whatever you are willing to pay. We'll hear about a local website that offers music on pay what you will basis.
