Quilcene Ranger District Auto Tour B (Part 2)

The Hood Canal Ranger District offers 2 fascinating auto tours complete with cassette tapes and booklets that may be checked out at the Quilcene office on Highway 101 in Quilcene. Along each tour, there are interesting sites and scenic vistas where you are directed to pull off the road and listen as the taped guide explains about the area. Each tour takes approximately 3 hours and due to the narrow, graveled roads, recreation vehicles and vehicles pulling trailers are not recommended.

Tour B leads you through the history of Snow Creek tree plantations, over Bear Mountain and into Dungeness Forks Campground. It highlights the history of the area and focuses on how wildlife, fisheries and watershed issues have changed forest management practices. This tour also stops at Lords Lake and proceeds from there to various stops en route to Dungeness Forks Campground.

Oregon provided the Capitol Christmas tree in 2002, Idaho in 2003, Virginia in 2004, and New Mexico last year shipped a 80-foot Engelmann Spruce 1,816 miles to Washington D.C. This year Washington State is giving the nation's Capitol a magnificent 45-year-old Pacific Silver fir that grew naturally on a steep bank above the headwaters of the Wynoochee River in the Olympic National Forest. Interview with Astronaut Mike Mullane

Colonel Mullane was born September 10, 1945 in Wichita Falls, Texas but spent much of his youth in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he currently resides. Upon his graduation from West Point in 1967, he was commissioned in the United States Air Force. As a Weapon Systems Operator aboard RF-4C Phantom aircraft, he completed 134 combat missions in Vietnam. He holds a Master's of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology and is also a graduate of the Air Force Flight Test Engineer School at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Mullane was selected as a Mission Specialist in 1978 in thefirst group of Space Shuttle Astronauts. He completed three space missions and logged 356 hours in space aboard the Shuttles Discovery (STS-41D) and Atlantis (STS-27 & 36) before retiring from NASA and the Air Force in 1990. Mullane has been inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame and is the recipient of many awards, including the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit and the NASA Space Flight Medal.Read More

This morning I noticed that Brent had a half empty vitamin water bottle in the front seat of his car and decided to find out what his story was all about. In about 3 weeks, Brent will be flying to Hawaii for an undetermined amount of time.
