Author: hypermoderns Added: Thu, 26 Jun 2008 19:24:08 -0800 Duration: 249Haxan (Witchcraft Through the Ages) - Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen's legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the middle ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious-instead it's a witches' brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous.

The Gold Rush (Silent, 1925) - Charlie Chaplin 3/12
from YouTube :: Tag // newyork May 09, 2008
Uncut, restored 1925 version. This is the film that Chaplin said that he wanted to be remembered by, and he has. With the possible exception of City Lights, it's generally considered to be his greatest work. In order to return the film to it's original 1925 length, at least two sources were used. About 85-90% came from one good and fairly complete source. But other scenes were taken from a softer and different sized source. This is the version to see! The Gold Rush (1925) is the quintessential Chaplin/Little Tramp film, with a balance of slapstick comedy and pantomime, social satire, and emotional and dramatic moments of tenderness. It showcases the classic Tramp character as a romantic idealist and lone gold prospector at the turn of the century, with his cane, derby, distinctive walk, tight shabby suit, and mustache. Classic scenes include the starvation scene of two cabin-marooned prospectors boiling and fastidiously eating a stewed shoe (actually black licorice), the Tramp's cabin-mate deliriously imagining his companion as a large chicken, the teetering cabin on the edge of a cliff, and Chaplin's lonely fantasized New Year's Eve party (with the dancing dinner rolls routine) when he waits for a girl who never comes. Early working titles for the film included Lucky Strike and The Northern Story. The film was shot over a period of 15 months (from spring 1924-summer 1925) both on a Hollywood studio back lot and in Truckee, California/Nevada, and premiered in New York at the Strand Theatre in mid-August, 1925. Starring Charles Chaplin as The Lone Prospector, Mack Swain as Big Jim McKay, Tom Murray as Black Larsen, Henry Bergman as Hank Curtis, Malcolm Waite as Jack Cameron, and Georgia Hale as Georgia. Directed and written by Charles Chaplin. Specially accompanied on the piano by Neil Brand, using melodies from the film's original compilation score by Karli D. Elinor. from Dailymotion - recent videos April 15, 2008
His First Flame is a showcase for silent film era comic genius Harry Langdon. Working for the master producer Mack Sennett, Langdon is at the peak of his career playing a bemused man-child who awkwardly maneuvers through social anxieties. In His First Flame, Langdon is a lovesick college man who wants to woo his sweetheart and is too naïve to realize she’s a gold digger. Involving copious amounts of the slapstick that Sennett’s studio was famous for, His First Flame is a sidesplitting laugh fest. But included, of course, is Langdon’s trademark pantomime and ridiculous gags. His First Flame is first rate comedy from the Silver Screen. Johnny Marvin - Lucky Me - Lovable You
from YouTube :: Tag // lost March 23, 2008
HMV B3331 In the 1920s, he was one of the most celebrated ukulele performers and crooners of the era. Billing himself as "Honey Duke and His Uke" then as "Johnny Marvin, the Ukulele Ace" his recorded output was prodigious. Among his many hits from the 1920s: "Oh How She Could Play the Ukulele," "Red Lips, Kiss My Blues Away," "If You See Sally," "There's Something Nice About Everyone (But There's Everything Nice About You)" and many others. He even had a brand of ukulele named for him, which sported his face on the headstock and was noted for its unique airplane-shaped bridge. As the ukulele craze of the 20s faded, Marvin retired. When the stock market crashed, however, he lost his savings and came out of retirement, reinventing himself as a cowboy songwriting partner to Gene Autry, providing him with a second equally noteworthy career that lasted until his death. DOW 25,000 By 2011 - Part 6 of 10
from YouTube :: Videos by muathedotcom September 02, 2007
The Spending Wave This article is the first in a series showing how the ideas proposed by the futurist Harry Dent (when carefully developed) support the contention that the secular bear market predicted by Dent to begin in the 2007-2010 time frame actually should have begun in the 1999-2001 time frame. This, of course, implies that the stock market peak last year marked the beginning of the long-term bear market forecast in my book Stock Cycles. Harry S. Dent developed the concept of the spending wave in his 1993 book The Great Boom Ahead. Dent proposed that economic boom and bust times are determined by demographic factors. Individual spending tends to peak in the mid-forties. Thus, aggregate spending should correlate with the size of the mid-forties population. If we plot the estimated size of the mid-forties age cohort with year we obtain a generally rising trend that shows a number of peaks and troughs due to past variations in birth and immigration rates. For example fewer babies were born during the Great Depression than either before or afterward. Thus, we would expect that 45 years later (during the 1970's and early 1980's) there would be a corresponding drop in the number of middle age people. Dent proposes that economic boom times are associated with increasing size of the mid-forties population and that bust times are associated with a decreasing size of this population. He calls these oscillations in the number of middle-agers (at their peak-spending years) the spending wave. In The Great Boom Ahead, Dent shows a graph that shows a close correlation between the Standard and Poor 500 index in constant dollars and the birth rate 44-46 years in the past. Since birth data have only been available since 1909, his graph begins in 1953. In his subsequent The Roaring 2000's, Dent adds on the effect of immigration. Since the average age of a new immigrant is around 30, Dent figures the impact of immigration should show up on spending with a 14-16 year lag. So the modified spending wave is obtained as the sum of the birth rate lagged 44-46 years and the immigration rate lagged 14-16 years.
