8233 (48773) on the Severn Valley Railway on 16th April 1988. There's not much to actually 'see' on this 'video' as it was nearly dark, but it was the start of a notable and memorable event. It was taken on the Saturday evening of the 1988 Spring Gala Weekend, and shows 8233 in Oldbury cutting, just after it had left Bridgnorth with a 16 carriage evening special. The noise was absolutely incredible when 8233 was opened up, and I still recall it vividly 20 years later. Sadly, it was so loud it overloaded the microphone on my camcorder and so the full glorious effect can't really be appreciated on this video, but just use your imagination! Amazingly, even better was to come later that night, when visiting Jubilee 5593 Kolhapur hauled the 16 carriage train back to Bridgnorth from Kidderminster. (Obviously it was pitch black by then, so video recording was impossible). I saw 5593 leaving Highley (which was great), and then witnessed 5593 ascending Eardington Bank with 16 on and what sounded like full regulator and at least 60% cut-off. The noise was absolutely ear shattering, and the firework display simply awesome. It still rates as the single most impressive attack of Eardington Bank that I have ever been priviliged to witness. I know of people back in Bridgnorth who heard the tremendous cacophony very clearly, all the way from Sterns to the summit. I did actually record this on an old tape recorder, but the noise levels were too much for it, even from a quarter of a mile away, and all I got was a mass of distortion. A fantastic memory! In 1997 I was lucky enough to drive Kolhapur on the Llangollen railway, but needless to say the noise I made with the loco was much more modest!
