Recently, the term mise en sc ne has come to represent a style of conveying the information of a scene primarily through a single shot often accompanied by camera movement. It is to be contrasted with montage-style filmmaking multiple angles pieced together through editing. Overall, mise-en-sc ne is used when the director wishes to give an impression of the characters or situation without vocally articulating it through the framework of spoken dialogue, and typically does not represent a realistic setting. The common example is that of a cluttered, disorganized apartment being used to reflect the disorganization in a character's life in general, or a spartanly decorated apartment to convey a character with an "empty soul", in both cases specifically and intentionally ignoring any practicality in the setting.

Why are nonlinear narratives so much more prevalent in novels than films? Why does a great nonlinear film feel so revolutionary, when in fact they re as old as the medium itself? Why do novels often feel flat when they unfold linearly, while films often fall flat when they embrace a nonlinear structure? To grapple with these issues, it s best to recall the difference between story and plot. The following sentence outlines a story: The king dies and then the queen dies. A plot requires the notion of causality: The king dies, and then the queen dies of grief. Novels construct plots to tell their stories, but can explain their meaning in the narrative. Films use plot, action and consequence, to convey meaning.

Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. It is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in a number of ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although several other forms of presenting animation also exist. The term computer-generated most often refers to a sound or visual that has been created in whole or in part with the aid of computer software. Sounds and visuals are the most easily computer-generated objects. They are created either from the ground up, or by using real-world models recorded by a microphone or camera, over which computer-generated objects are placed.

HD 1080p is the shorthand name for a category of HDTV video modes. The number "1080" represents 1,080 lines of vertical resolution (1080 horizontal scan lines),[1] while the letter p stands for progressive scan (meaning the image is not interlaced). 1080p can be referred to as full HD or full high definition to differentiate it from other HDTV video modes.[2] The term usually assumes a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, implying a horizontal resolution of 1920 pixels. This creates a frame resolution of 1920 1080, or 2,073,600 pixels in total. The frame rate in hertz can be either implied by the context or specified after the letter p (or i), such as 1080p30, meaning 30 Hz.[3] 1080p is sometimes referred to in marketing materials as "Complete High-Definition". However, 2K/4K digital cinema technology is commercially available, and ultra-high definition video is in the research phase.

HD in filmmaking Film as a medium has inherent limitations, such as difficulty of viewing footage whilst recording, and suffers other problems, caused by poor film development/processing, or poor monitoring systems. Given that there is increasing use of computer-generated or computer-altered imagery in movies, and that editing picture sequences is often done digitally, some directors have shot their movies using the HD format via high-end digital video cameras. Whilst the quality of HD video is very high compared to SD video, and offers improved signal/noise ratios against comparable sensitivity film, film remains able to resolve more image detail than current HD video formats. In addition some film has a wider dynamic range (ability to resolve extremes of dark and light areas in a scene) than even the best HD cameras. Thus the most persuasive arguments for the use of HD are currently cost savings on film stock and the ease of transfer to editing systems for special effects

A tapeless camcorder is a camcorder that does not use videotape to store its data. Common alternatives include flash memory (such as Secure Digital card or Memory Stick), a hard disk, USB port connected to the computer or other mass storage or DVD media. All tapeless camcorders use digital formats to store their data. The technique exists throughout the range of camcorders; inexpensive flash memory units, while not particularly high quality, can be used as essentially disposable substitutes for a more expensive DVD or MiniDV camcorder; similar flash technology is used on semi-pro and high-end pro cameras for ultrafast transfer of high-bandwidth HDTV content. Hard drives can also be used. Using DVD media as a base for a camcorder is becoming increasingly popular due to the convenience of being able to drop a disc into the family DVD player; however, DVD capability, due to the limitations of the format, is largely limited to consumer-level equipment targeted at people who are not likely to spend any great amount of effort editing their video. Most consumer-level tapeless camcorders use MPEG-2, MPEG-4 or its derivatives as encoding formats. They are normally capable of still-image capture to JPEG format additionally. Consumer-grade tapeless camcorders include a USB port to transfer video onto a computer. Professional models include other options like SDI or HDMI. Some tapeless camcorders are equipped with a FireWire port to ensure compatibility with tape-based DV and HDV formats.
