Air France (formally Sociate Air France) is a French airline based in Roissy-en-France, France, and is one of the world's largest airlines. It is a subsidiary of the Air France-KLM Group and a founding member of the SkyTeam global airline alliance. Air France was formed on 7 October 1933, from a merger of Air Orient, Air Union, Compagnie Generale Aeropostale, Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Arienne (CIDNA), and Sociate Generale de Transport Airien (SGTA). In 1990, the airline acquired the operations of domestic French carrier Air Inter and international rival Union des Transports A??riens (UTA). Air France served as France's primary national flag carrier for seven decades prior to its 2003 merger with KLM. Between April 2001 and March 2002, the airline carried 43.3mn passengers and had total revenues of $12.53bn. Douglas DC-4 piston-engined airliners covered the route in just under 20 hours. By 1948 Air France operated one of the largest fleets in the world, numbering 130 aircraft. In 1946 and 1948, respectively, the French government further authorised the creation of two private airlines: Transports Airiens Internationaux - later Transports Ariens Intercontinentaux - (TAI) and SATI. In 1949 the latter became part of Union A??romaritime de Transport (UAT), a private French international airline. Compagnie Nationale Air France was created by act of parliament on 16 June 1948. Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (IATA: CDG, ICAO: LFPG) (French: A??roport Paris-Charles de Gaulle), also known as Roissy Airport (or just Roissy in French), in the Paris area, is one of the world's principal aviation centres, as well as France's main International Airport. It is named after Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970), leader of the Free French Forces and founder of the French Fifth Republic. It is located within portions of several communes, 25 km (16 mi) to the north-east of Paris. The airport serves as the principal hub for Air France. In 2008, Charles de Gaulle Airport handled 60,851,998 passengers and 559,812 aircraft movements, making it the world's fifth busiest airport in terms of passengers, and Europe's second busiest (world's 8th busiest) airport after London Heathrow airport in terms of aircraft movements. In terms of cargo traffic, the airport is the busiest in Europe and the world's 7th busiest, having handled 2,280,049 metric tonnes of cargo. The planning and construction phase of what was known then as A??roport de Paris Nord (Paris North Airport) began in 1966. On 8 March 1974 the airport, renamed Charles de Gaulle International Airport, began service. Terminal 1 was built to an avant-garde design of a ten-floor high circular building surrounded by seven satellite buildings each with four gates. The main architect was Paul Andreu, who was also in charge of the extensions during the following decades. The grassy lands on which the airport is located are notorious for rabbits and hares, which can be seen by airplane passengers at certain times of the day. The airport organizes periodic hunts and captures to keep the population to manageable levels.

An Air France plane missing over the Atlantic with 228 people aboard reported electrical problems in stormy weather before it lost contact, the airline said Monday, describing the loss as a catastrophe. The Airbus A330-200 sent automatic messages signaling equipment failure as it hit turbulence early in its 11-hour flight from Rio de Janeiro to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, Air France CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon told a news conference. The last known contact with the plane was at 1:33 a.m. GMT (8:33 p.m. Sunday night ET), according to the Brazilian Air Force. Brazil says it has launched two air force squadrons to hunt near the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha in the Atlantic Ocean, 365 kilometers (226 miles) from its coast, although the plane vanished outside the country's radar coverage.
