NEW COMM ROAD MAP How to step out of podcasting s echo chamber. Evangelize outside your regular online network. Here are some groups/people/places to start: A club, organization, or religious group that you belong to. A nearby elementary, middle school, or high school. Talk to the teachers or PTO about setting up a podcast for the school or your child s class. A local college or adult education center. Does the school s communications program have a class on new media or podcasting? Offer to do a presentation or teach a class. Your local cable access station. Your municipal officers/politicians. Perhaps create a podcast for someone running for school committee or city council. Your family. Interview a different member of your family each week and turn the interviews into a podcast. Don t get hung up on explaining the technology at first. Concentrate on the benefits for that person or organization, using the you know when ? style. Dispel the common misconception that you ll need an iPod to listen to a podcast. Explain podcasting using concepts people are likely to understand quickly. For example: It s like Internet radio that you can listen to whenever and wherever you want. It s an audio version of TiVo. Show the people you re talking to that there are podcasts in the subjects they are interested in. Ask them about their hobbies and direct them to relevant podcasts. If you are presenting on podcasting a conference, really make an effort to be welcoming to newcomers. Seek out their questions. Spend some time with them after their presentation. I ll be attending the conference and will deliver a presentation called Managing Your Social Media. FEEDBACK Audio comment from Christopher Penn on Soundtrack Pro. NEW COMM ROAD MAP Building a community in Facebook. Ask the initial question: Is Facebook the right place to build your community? Who s the audience you re trying to reach? Are they already on Facebook? Think about your goals. What are your objectives? What does building a community involve? What do you want the group members to do? Where do you build the community? Around your personal profile or around a Facebook group? There are differences. Groups are more findable and have a higher profile, while individual pages offer the advantage of embedding Facebook applications, and there are hundreds to choose from. If you are building a community around your personal page, add applications that will engage your community. Two that I ve seen and like are My Questions and Quizzes. If you re using a group, keep it active. Specific tactics include: Start and maintain discussion threads. Appoint officers and give them responsibilities in the group. Schedule and promote events for the group. Send the occasional direct message to everyone in the group to drive them back to the group page and to take an action. If you have photos, add them and encourage group members to comment. Create a good group description. Keep your contact information and Recent News up-to-date. If you have the budget, consider setting up a sponsored group. It is costly a minimum of US$50,000 for three months but enables you to create more dynamic content and control the advertisers on your group pages. This latter option works best if you just want to use Twitter within a specific group. Add friends. Determine whether you want receive messages by IM AIM, Gmail talk, or Jabber and phone. Consider how often you want to receive those interruptions while your working, whether you want to receive messages in the middle of the night, etc. You can also choose just to receive IM/phone messages from a select group of friends. To exclude a friend from IM/phone updates, click on the user s profile and select leave. You still keep that person as a friend, but your IM/phone stream won t pick up that user s messages. If you have a specific link you want someone to see, include the URL in your post. Promote your blog post, new podcast, etc. Build community by featuring your friends in your posts with the @ symbol or a link. Need a quick question answered and want to ask a big group at once? Try throwing out the question to Twitter. Tools of your trade A new segment on the podcast that will feature your audio contributions and how you use new media in your job. New Comm Road Map: + Question from Marko Kulik from Pets.ca and the Photography.ca Podcast originally played on Six Pixels of Separation, The Twist Image Podcast. Six ways to make Technorati work for you, which will be simulcasted on Six Pixels: 0. Create an account in Technorati 1. Claim your blog(s) in Technorati. 2. Use the Technorati tools and widgets. 3. Set up Technorati watch lists for hot topics that you want to follow. 4. Use all of the various Technorati tag searches to research a topic. Make sure that in the Technorati search box, your drop-down menu shows in tags Then, when you do a search, you ll also see options to search your tags by blog post, photos, video, music, etc. Photo tags pull from Flickr. Video tags pull from YouTube. 5. Understand the difference between a Technorati tag using in blog posts and in tags. The first includes any mention of your search term in a blog, which is sometimes what you want. However, the in tags option will specifically give you results in which someone has taken the active step of categorizing that blog post, photo, or video about the topic your looking for. 6. Use RSS to subscribe to searches about you (ego surfing), about your clients, about industry topics, or particular tags. This option works specifically for searches of blog posts in both the in blog posts and in tags modes. At the top of the search results page, you ll see the orange RSS logo and the word subscribe. Add that RSS link into your RSS reader! New Comm Road Citation: The citation is being given to me. Podcaster and blogger Dan York has been on a crusade lately asking bloggers and podcasters to include a logo/badge somewhere on their site that he and others can use when blogging about those sites. This badge can help him to promote our blogs and podcasters and offers a good visual identity for our content. I don t have one of these badges on the NewCommRoad.com blog or the Bryper.com blog. That will change. MUSIC: + From GarageBand.com: Still Holding On, by Rantings of Eva * This show can also be found on Blubrry.
