#226 Prints Gone Wild III from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on June 13, 2008 183 views
iPod | Apple TV | Mobile | Windows Media Last February Tom Huck, printmaker extraordinaire, called me up and begged and pleaded with me to come cover this event of print makers from around the country who had converged on the Contemporary Art Museum to sell prints and socialize. I had already planned to shoot another event that very night but figured that I could squeeze in about an hour at this show before I hit the other event. I m glad I did, because this was a party like no other. Complete with wild art and poetry and music there were even half nude performance artists from Estonia. This was nothing short of a blast.

#193 Record Show! from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on September 15, 2007 675 views
Even though the music business has tried to make it obsolete, the vinyl record is still alive and kicking. People still love it, and there has even been a small resurgence of sales of vinyl records in the last few years. And somewhere around the country almost every weekend there are record swap meets where collectors can meet up to buy and sell or trade in the the music format that just won t die. I visited this one that happens every two months in St. Louis.

#178 Doc Popular Yo-Yo Master! from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on July 22, 2007 1,146 views
You might know Doc Popular as a nerdcore rapper, or a lo-fi techno musician who plays on bent toy electronics, or maybe you bought one of his crafty blue jean wallets, or read one of his comics, or maybe you ve seen him in a video or two right here on PodTech. But I think this is the first time anyone has actually got him to sit down and talk about his career as a yo-yo champion. One doesn t get many chances to see a yo-yo champ perform, so I had to interview this San Francisco-based renaissance man when he was in St. Louis recently to judge a yo-yo contest. Oh, and I should mention that the music in this video was also written and performed by the man himself.

#177 The Cowboy Cabaret from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on July 19, 2007 1,173 views
This video contains Brief partial nudity and may not be work safe. The Cowboy Cabaret is a throwback to the good old days of night clubs. You know — when good wholesome family entertainment was in style. When you could take a date out on a Sunday night and hear a comedian tell dirty jokes and girls would sing and dance and take off their clothes to tunes played by real live muscians. Yeah, that kind of entertainment. It happens on the first Sunday of every month at the Atomic Cowboy. If you want to see this, get your tickets in advance because every show sells out fast. Episode #168 Bunnygrunt and Bunnygrunt with Bob Reuter from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on June 13, 2007 654 views
Ok, I have another clip from the Southside Rock n Roll Rave. This time, it s a band called Bunnygrunt. They have a great power pop sound that s pretty catchy. I also include here a clip of their performance with Bob Reuter playing one of his original songs. You might remember Bob from the piece I did on him a couple of years ago about the lo-fi photographer. Bob s kind of a jack of all trades, and a pretty interesting guy. I ll probably do another video about him soon.

#164 The Brewers Heritage Beer Festival from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on May 29, 2007 954 views
This spring, several local breweries got together to celebrate the rich brewing heritage in St. Louis. As a birthplace of the modern brewing industry, we have quite a heritage to celebrate. Brewers of all types were there to enjoy beer and show off their skills. I spoke to a brewmaster from the giant brewery Anheuser-Busch (that s a local macro-brewery here you might have heard of. They make a product called Budweiser ) and a member of the local homebrew club. I also got to meet the brothers that founded the ultimate beer lover s Web site and Magazine, The Beer Advocate. Music: Beer, Beer, Beer by the Brobdingnagian Bards courtesy of the Podsafe Music Network.

#153 Old Time Radio at the Mad Art Gallery from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on April 13, 2007 477 views
Last fall, some crazy cats who hang around the Mad Art Gallery had an idea; do a live radio show the way they were done from the 1930 s to the 1950 s, with a live audience, band and sound effects guys … the whole bit. Well, they pulled it off, and they plan to do it again. In fact they re planning on making it a regular thing at Mad Art. Here is a little taste of what it was like.

The Mad Art Gallery is a unique art space in St. Louis. It occupies a former 1930 s-era art deco police station on the southside of the city. #140 Mac Geek Porn from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on February 17, 2007 675 views
Jeremy Mehrle has turned the basement of his suburban St. Louis home into one of the coolest private computer museums you will ever see. He has 74 vintage Apple Macintosh computers impeccably displayed. All of them are fully-functional so you can see what the old operating systems were like. Some of the highlights of his collection are an Apple Lisa, a 20th Anniversary Macintosh, and a NeXT computer. This is not the first time his collection has been seen on the Web. After he first posted photos of it on his Flickr account, the collection was seen on several prominent blogs and social networking sites, including the front page of Digg (twice!), Macworld, Mac Life, and Engadget. But Podtech and LO-FI SAINT LOUIS are proud to bring the first video look at this amazing collection — amazing not for its size but the loving care Jeremy took in displaying these machines. Thanks to Walkie Talkie USA for providing the great Bowiesque soundtrack for this video. Also there s a bit of tech satire at the end of this video that you might enjoy — it s from the sketch comedy group Flapping Crane. Special thanks to them for permission to use their clip.

#139 The Sci-Fi Lounge from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on February 15, 2007 402 views
2 Years ago I posted my first video on LO-FI SAINT LOUIS. Go back and see the video that started it all! Coyote is a St. Louis artist that opens up his storefront studio once a week as a cafe/hang out not so much to show off his work, but to show off his collection of toys. He has been collecting Star Wars and science fiction-themed toys and memorabilia for several years now, and he s amassed a collection that nearly fills his entire studio space. If you re in St. Louis you can check it out in person on Thursday nights from 8 to midnight at 6010 Kingsbury Avenue. Thanks to Thee Lordly Serpents for letting me use their great music for this video. They re not a band anymore, but 2 of them are now in the Nevermores.

#136 The Carolina Chocolate Drops (Part 2) from LO-FI SAINT LOUIS DOCUMENTARYS on February 02, 2007 420 views
Play iPod compatible MP4 version This is part 2 (get part 1 here) of a two-part podcast where I interview the Carolina Chocolate Drops, an old-time string band from Durham, NC. They play early African-American folk music that was popular before there was even a record industry. The three members of this group, Justin Robinson, Dom Flemons, and Rihannon Giddens are all exceptional multi-instrumentalists and dynamic performers. Among the instruments they play in a typical performance are the guitar, fiddle and banjo (of course), and also rare instruments like the kazoo, bones and the jug. I caught their show at legendary St. Louis Blues joint BB s Jazz Blues And Soups. Thanks for all the great feedback. You can also leave comments on the comment line at 206-338-5634.

I have a pair of Sponge Bob boxer shorts and they are my favorite pair of underwear. I drive a mini-van, AND LIKE IT! Untill I was about 21 I was a conservative Republican, I am now a proud Liberal Democrat. (one of the above may be a complete lie!) Now I m tagging, Erik, Deirdre, Paul, Susan, and Kelly.
