The new owner of the the Main Medical Building hopes to continue to develop that property. Jim Bowman, who will soon retire from the Air Force, has bought Main Medical, located near Trinity Hospital. The 31,000 square foot building is 70% full at present. Bowman came to Minot just this past December, and never expected to retire here. But he says he enjoys it here and is impressed with the energy of Minot's business community. In Mohall, the building that at one time was the community hospital has new owners. Mohall natives Glen Gates and his sister Joan bought it. After some remodeling, they will have two businesses here, Gates Energy and Gates Motor Corporation. They also plan to have a musuem featuring old medical supplies, and open the exercise room up for public use. Trinity was the owner of the building these past few years, they had a clinic in here, but it moved to another building a couple of years ago. In this home in Kenmare, a former bedroom was converted into a commercial kitchen...it's here that lots of different goodies are made, and delivered to grocery stores throughout this part of the state. They also take special orders. It's a business run by Bev Heninger called Cookies and Confections. Her employees bake everything from scratch, using no preservatives. In Velva, new owners at the Pioneer Bar. Judy and Jim Mello bought the business with Judy being in charge of day to day operations. They are doing a few changes to update the look of the business. The Pioneer Bar is known for its good food, and Judy says that will continue. They serve meals six nights a week. In the little town of Flaxton, new owners at the Lunch Box. Heidy Gil and her family are Cuban. They were living in New Jersey but were fed up with the crime and congestion, so they used the internet to find some place better. (Heidy Gil, Lunch Box) I liked North Dakota, and then decided I liked Northwest North Dakota, and I chose Flaxton and moved here two years ago. The resturant is open six days a week. They serve traditional American food, but now with the new owners, some international foods are offered as well. For Business Beat, I'm Carla Burbidge.

The 4th ranked Minot High Football team will kick off the home portion of their schedule tomorrow night when they host Fargo Shanley. The Magicians opened their season last Friday with a 20-14 win over Grand Forks Red River while the Deacons were shut out by Bismarck Century. The Deacons are a young team and because of that fact might look to try some different things against the Magicians. Barry Holmen, MHS football coach:Even though they took one on the chin last week, they played a real good Century team pretty tough and I expect a team that's gonna come with lots of energy and excitement. I think he's gonna change a little bit of his offensive scheme and we just traded film and we're just learning about him and his new style here. I think they're gonna open it up a little bit. I believe they feel that they have a runningback that can do well if they create a little space for him. Kalvin Larson, senior:Shanley's another younger team like we'll be but they'll be a pretty decent team and I think if we just show up and play. Should have a pretty good chance of winning. Gametime tomorrow night will be at 8 p.m. at Duane Carlson stadium.

Across town the Minot Ryan Lions Football team also will be at home for the first time this year when they host Rugby. Both teams are coming off of season opening losses to class A powerhouses Harvey and Velva. The teams met twice last year with the Lions coming up winners both times, but both teams are much younger than they were a year ago. Bryan Kramer, Ryan football coach:They are in a similar situation we are. Coach Scott Grochow's trying to find kids that fit into his system. And they're a big, physical team up front. We're gonna have to try and match that a little bit. They got some weapons in their passing game that we are concerned about and coach Grochow's awfully good at scheming. So we're gonna have to come tomorrow night and play real hard. Brandon Storbeck, junior:It's been a good week. We've been going hard all week and we've been getting a lot of good things done and just trying to work our hearts out. Gametime tomorrow night will be at 7 p.m. at Herb Parker stadium.

North Dakota Governor John Hoeven says Sarah Palin is someone Americans will grow to know and love. Hoeven says he's known the Republican Vice President nominee for years and is very impressed with her abilities and down-to-earth style. Hoeven is attending the GOP convention in St. Paul this week and says last night's speech by Palin electrified the party faithful. He says the nominee is a person you can have a one-on-one conversation with and feel comfortable. And Hoeven says Palin understands the challenges faced by people across the country. (Gov. John Hoeven) Somebody who's a mother, a wife, who has a family, who's dealt with all those issues that we all deal with. I think that's important, not only in terms of somebody being a good elected official, but somebody that people throughout this country really relate to and someone they know understands their issues, understands the challenges they face, the things they have to work on and deal with. Hoeven expects tonight's speech by Senator John McCain will focus more on issues the party wants to bring to the spotlight as the election draws closer.

29-year-old Ryan Havelka died of a rare, but deadly illness on August 5th. And today his widow, Patty Havelka, spoke out about hantavirus. The Health Department usually does not hold conferences like this one because of confidentiality concerns. But Ryan's widow Patty insisted she wanted to get the word out about the illness that took her husband's life. Fighting back tears today, Patty described her husband... (Patty Havelka, Ryan's Wife) We've been married for, well, it would have been six years this last Sunday; and we have three kids, four-and-a-half, 2-and-a-half and one. A lot of his life was just being a good father to the girls. Kirby Kruger is the state epidiemologist and says while hantavirus is rare it's important for people to be cautious... (Patty) It's difficult for people to distinguish between the different species of small mammals, small rhodents in North Dakota. From our point of view, we encourage people to view and treat every small rhodent as a potential carrier of hantavirus. Here are some facts about hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. It was first identified in 1993 in the southwest United States. The symptoms, include fatigue, fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea. Hantavirus cannot be spread from person to person. Around half of those people infected with hantavirus die from the disease.

Another day of delay had farmers on the move near Garrison today trucking grain to the elevator but not nearly as much as previous years. (Chris Gratton, Garrison Farmers Union Elevator Manager) We probably only had three or four good harvest days as where I would call it where we had trucks in line and things were happening. It's a steady flow but it's not.. it's, it's probably about 40 percent of what our harvest should be so far. Garrison Farmers Union Elevator Manager Chris Gratton says the only way to classify this growing season is one of drought. He says the crop was able to get growing this spring with some rain but after that the clouds dried up... and when moisture did fall if fell in the form of Golf ball to baseball size hail. (Chris Gratton, Garrison Farmers Union Elevator Manager) It looked good, dried out again and then we got four nights of hail pretty much took a good chunk of our crop. Gratton says yields are coming in extremely low but if there is one bright spot the protein in the wheat is climbing into the premium column. (Chris Gratton, Garrison Farmers Union Elevator Manager) We're running some nice proteins in our spring wheat, some good test weights. durum's looking good with low damage, nice color but a lot of the farmers are saying 10 to 12 bushel yields I mean some are a lot lower too. With fewer bushels coming off the field much of it is heading right into the bin and Gratton expects most producers are holding on and waiting for the harvest price slump to subside and looking ahead to a late fall or early winter price rally. The late harvest has yet to kick in but already the worry about weather is already shifting to an early frost and and early end to a the growing season for crops like Corn. (Chris Gratton, Garrison Farmers Union Elevator Manager) You know it was just about freezing last night, we had some frost in the area so if we freeze out the corn it's probably three weeks too early for that. It's not the best season, in fact it's not a good season by any means but Gratton says there's always next season and hope for farmers in the Garrison area that they could be just a winter away from their next bumper crop. Here's Hoping Near Garrison with Your Eye On Agriculture, Shaun Sipma KX News.

The Minot State Football team will try to rebound from a hard fought 27-24 loss to Bemidji State when the team travels to St. Paul this weekend for a first ever matchup with Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears are an NCAA division 2 school who are also looking for their first win after being beaten by Minnesota-Duluth 40-0 last week in their opener. The matchup will be another tough one for the Beavers who will look for improvement as they move closer to conference play. Paul Rudolph, MSU football coach:We wanna play good teams, we wanna put our guys in the most competitive situations we possibly can and they're a quality team same as Bemidji and probably a little bit faster than Bemidji was. They do have some guys that can get after it and run, so we'll have our hands full. They like spreading it around. They got a couple of quarterbacks. Both are strong armed guys that throw it around. Little bit new in the O line but they're very, very skilled at the wide receiver spot. They like throwing it around a lot. Tyson Snelling, senior:Anytime you get a chance to play a team in another division especially higher in division two it's always a great atmosphere in the locker room to be playing someone's that not so much better but they're a good opponent. So it's better for us, it's better for them, it'll be just a great atmosphere for us. Game time on Saturday is at 1 p.m. in St. Paul.

Ward County's preliminary budget for 2009 is still not finalized. Commissioners met this morning with hopes of voting on the budget blueprint that would go on to a public meeting and eventually an October adoption. But there are still some issues unsettled - including an agreement for cost sharing for prosecution with the city. The city council did not act on that issue last night as the county board had expected. Also this morning, commissioners heard a plea to approve the full 100-thousand dollar increase in costs for the county's juvenile detention center rather than the 50-thousand dollars commissioners approved. Meanwhile, commissioners Jim Lee and Jerome Gruenberg asked colleagues to consider cutting other expenses to reduce the approximate 10-percent increase in spending proposed in the 2009 budget. (Jim Lee, Ward Co. Commissioner) If you're budgeting and the spending is up and the income is difficult then you make a hard choice. Is it something we like? No it's not (Jerome Gruenberg, Ward Co. Commissioner) What you're doing is removing or cutting back on services we have here instead of going after the state legislature. That's where the problem comes from. As you and Jim have said and we all agree to, the problem comes the state legislature passing down these expenses. (John Fjeldahl, Ward Co. Commissioner) What I'm saying is let's deal with the here and now. Commissioners decided to meet again next week in an effort to finalize the preliminary budget. After that, a public hearing will be held and a final vote on the budget will come by October 7th.

Rural regions of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation will have a new supply of clean water under an agreement celebrated today at the Four Bears Events Center near New Town. North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan and officials from New Town and the Three Affiliated Tribes said the deal is the result of years of work among groups from the federal government, state agencies, and local groups. The agreement calls for the Three Affiliated Tribes to purchase treated water from New Town for distribution to people in rural areas of the reservation. New Town's water plant was expanded in 2004, and construction should begin next year on a pipeline system to bring the water to several areas around New Town.

Governor John Hoeven announces a half a billion dollar comprehensive tax relief package. The plan will provide 300-million dollars in property tax relief, another 100-million dollars in income tax relief and a minimum of 100-million dollars in funding for quality education. Hoeven says this package will increase the amount of state funding for education to 72-percent. He says this is all possible because of the strong economy we are experiencing in the state... (Gov. John Hoeven, (R) North Dakota) And because of our growing revenue base which comes from our strong focus on aggressive economic development. It's a bold plan, five hundred million dollars, but it's a big step forward for North Dakota. Hoeven says the plan would lower state income tax rates by an average of 14 to 15 percent.

A final vote on Ward County's preliminary budget won't come until tomorrow. Commissioners decided today to wait until after tonight's Minot City Council meeting to vote on the budget. The budget will be impacted by a city decision on funding for a prosecution agreement. About 30-thousand dollars is at stake. Meanwhile, commissioners broke several 2-2 ties from previous budget item votes. One vote turned into a 3-to-2 vote in favor of a 50-thousand dollar increase in the budget for First District Health Unit. The extra money is needed to cover a loss of state funds for an immunization program at the health unit. Commissioner Jim Lee voted against the budget increase, saying the county had to put its foot down on state-mandated requirements that are not funded. (Jim Lee, County Commissioner) I hope any of these legislators that allowed this to happen aren't the ones running around talking about property tax relief because all they're doing is shoveling all their cuts down on us. This falls under the unfunded mandate thing again. The county commissioners will meet Wednesday morning to hold a final vote on the preliminary 2009 budget.

If you were in Minot or the surrounding area last night, there's a good chance you experienced a power outage. The loss of power stemmed from a late evening incident, and today crews were back at work cleaning up the damage. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) Beginning at 9:54pm, equipment failure caused a fire in the control building at Verendrye Electric's bulk delivery substation serving the Minot area. This caused an outage to 15 substations serving approximately 8600 consumers. The majority of those affected were in Ward County. 3100 customers were restored within 45 minutes and the remainder restored by 11:40 pm. After the fire was out and the damages were assessed, the substation was isolated and power re-routed to restore service to all customers. Tom Meland with Central Power Electric Cooperative, says even though the lights are back on, there's still plenty of work to be done. (Tom Meland, Central Power Electric Coop.) Today, we're working on the Mallard Station, trying to put in place that equipment that we can to shore up the Ruthville substation. This is going to be a couple-day process probably until we're finished repairing everything here. It's pretty complex and involved with a lot of cabling and wire work. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) Meland says they would not have been able regain power so fast without the efforts of numerous workers and businesses. (Tom Meland, Central Power Electric Coop.) Appreciate the cooperation of Verendrye Electric, our member, switching around and getting the load restored as quickly as possible. Xcel energy, they helped us out here last night. They own a lot of the equipment in here too and there's a lot of cable in it going back and forth, as well as Otter Tail, helped out in some of the outlying areas, picked up some of our load. Representatives say the substation will remain out of service while repairs are made and they expect the station to be back in service within a couple of days. In the meantime, they say the alternate power supply will provide adequate service while repairs are being made. Meland estimates there was around 50,000 dollars worth of damage to the substation.

An apartment fire in northeast Minot today, was the cause of some external building damage. Around six o'clock this afternoon, the Minot Fire Department received a report of a door on fire at an apartment complex located on 6th Street SE. Shortly after arrival, firefighters determined the cause to be an electrical malfunction on the exterior of the building. Captain John Krill of the Minot Fire Department was part of the crew that responded and says it didn't take long to put out the fire but there were still other concerns for the firefighters. (Capt. John Krill / Minot Fire Department) Everyone was out of the building and our biggest concern was not getting firemen hurt. We had to carefully attack the fire because it involved electricity. And we just took our time, gave it some short bursts, knocked the fire down, and we're waiting for Xcel energy to show up and as soon as they get the power shut down, we're to go ahead and clear up the rest of some minor fire and make sure it's out so it doesn't start back up again. Krill says the interior of the building may have received some smoke damage, but the most severe damage was contained to the exterior of the complex.

It's a disease that's hard to diagnose...Lou Gerhig's. When it comes to ALS, doctors rule out everything else, and then if they still don't know what it is, they call it ALS... It's a quiet killer... But when he watched last years MDA telethon he contacted KX and decided it was time to tell his story. Lauren Kalberer reports. Just wondered what was going on, but didn't think much about it. Thomas Stoltz felt the symptoms 30 years ago... His wife remembers the exact moment... We were going over the Memorial bridge when we first discovered it/ We went over the bridge and it make that noise and I remember him saying my hands are numb, my feet are numb. So what does that mean, we didn't think anything of it. He noticed subtle signs after that, but it wasn't until 4 years ago Thomas officially got the news.. He has Loui Gerrigs Disease.. or ALS Kinda like why me? Then a guy gets angry for a while, it takes a while to learn to accept it. Some days I still don't. ALS knows know boundaries it can strike anyone at anytime for no reason at all... For Thomas ALS means giving up what he loves to do. Hunting and fishing or baseball, I used to love baseball. Or just hiking in the country side. It just doesn't work any more. He was a young man who could fix cars, he could do any kinds of those things. He loved to go out and play ball with the boys.../as the years went on it became less and less just to get underneath the car and tinker. The swallowing is hard to watch cuz it sounds like he's choking. And, he uses a breathing machine at night... Thomas admits he's scared for the unknown...he's scared for the day he looses complete muscle control. Mind is there but everything else isn't. But, he's also hopeful that one day, all his symptoms will disappear... (reporter) Are you hopeful a cure could still be found? Ya I'm Hopeful./Get progress reports on their research, they're doing lots of stuff (reporter) Do you really believe it will happen? I think so... Until then Thomas says every day is a gift... I'm just thankful to be alive and moving around as much as I can Be sure to watch the Jerry Lewis Telethon on labor day. You expect towns like Williston, Tioga and Stanley to be buzzing these days with all of the oil activitiy. But you don't have to be in the heart of oil country to feel the impact. Just try to find a house in Mohall for example. Susan Mathiason of Mathiason Realty says rental properties are especially in demand... (Susan Mathiason, Mathiason Realty) Because especially with the oil companies, as far as the ones we get in here, they just want to rent for right now. There's been a few that have looked as far as buying, but I don't think there's anything to rent in Mohall right now. And Mathiason says they only have a handful of houses listed for sale right now. She says a lot of it is thanks to the oil boom, but some of it is because of overall improvements in the local community. Even every apartment in a four-plex being constructed near the school has been spoken for, and there's a waiting list should the community decide to build another one. (Susan) It's porbably a good problem. I mean, you've got people moving in, which is always good. We just need to have some more homes to sell...or rent. Maithaison says houses average between 30 and 65-thousand dollars in the Mohall area. She says the biggest demand is for rural property.

A 10 percent increase in spending for the proposed 2009 Minot city budget had aldermen asking lots of questions of department mangers tonight at city hall. The annual meeting gives council members a chance to ask questions about spending requests from different departments and what changes are expected in the coming year. The proposed budget shows spending jumping more than 5.8 million dollars from 56.99 million dollars in 2008 to 62.86 million dollars in 2009. Much of the increase is being attributed to higher energy costs. One item, though, that raised concerns from alderman and the Minot Police Chief was the ever increasing amount of unpaid fines and fines that are dismissed in court. Chief Balentine didn't have the exact amount on hand but said the city is being shorted tens of thousands of dollars because the court won't enforce the fines. (Chief Jeff Balentine, Minot Police Department) We have a hard working crew out there on the street that's bringing those people to justice and they're being fined. We have a revolving door. Fines are being levied, people are being are agreeing to a payments schedule, they're not making those payment schedules, therefore another warrant is issued out of the court taking valuable time from the officers on the street to go find those people and bring them back to court and the judge sees fit to dismiss the charge against them the warrant and gives them more time to pay on their original fine. The proposed budget will now reviewed by the full city council and amended if needed before it passed.
