Video: Joe on the Go: Dog Show from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 24, 2008 3 views / likes
The fair brings in many talented performers - but as Joe Goldade found out, some of the fair's best are on four legs! (Joe on the go Goldade / KX News) Joe on the go at the North Dakota State Fair! Today, we're checking out the extreme canines - it's a great show! Located just north of the KX Information Center, this amazing stunt show, running 3 times daily, will make sure you have dog gone fun! (Chris Perondi Extreme Canines Stunt Dog Show) I got into dog training as kind of a hobby. I wanted my dog to catch a frisbee. I was in the computer industry, and I was tired of commuting a hour and a half each day, and I would just love to go home and jam at the park with my dog playing frisbee. So, I basically sold my house, quit my job and went out on the road full time performing with the dogs. (Joe on the go Goldade / KX News) Besides the high flying, frisbee catching, jaw dropping stunts that these canines perform, there's something much more special about each and every one of these star performers... (Chris Perondi Extreme Canines Stunt Dog Show) We adopt all the dogs from pounds and shelters and we look for dogs who are high energy, who love to play, and obviously we want them to be friendly with people - that's important too... (Audience Screaming) GO! (Joe on the go Goldade / KX News) That's the audience cheering for their favorite dog in this head to head race... (Announcer and Audience Screaming) Ready, set, GO! (Joe on the go Goldade / KX News) (((Sierra Barking))) ...and the show runs daily, Sierra wants you to come out and see her here at the North Dakota State Fair, Sierra, around! and come see all of their tricks! At the North Dakota State Fair, I'm Joe on the go. Good Girl Sierra!!!

Video: Keeping the Fairgrounds Clean from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 24, 2008 0 views / likes
Looking for some work? There might be something for you here at the State Fair. It isn't glamorous...but we should all be thankful it gets done each day! Perry Olson has the dirty details. (Rylie Ringoen) It is the fair and it can be gross at times. Rylie would know...she and a small Army of friends are out each morning making sure we don't have to deal with too much garbage. (ns of garbage going in) (Josh Brown - Berthold) We start in the morning on the main bathrooms and clean the big messes. In the afternoon we make rounds...have to let the bathrooms get dirty! Get dirty...and sometimes interesting! (Rylie) Nastiest would be the clogged toilets, but the weirdest was the cat in the men's bathroom! A live cat and it was huge! IS IT CLEAN ENOUGH TO EAT OFF THE FLOOR? (Daniel Yale) I woundn't, but yes it is clean enough! Don't think these kids don't find time to enjoy the fair as well...they do... (Josh) Bring some extra clothes to go to the concerts. YOU DON'T WEAR THIS TO THE CONCERT...OR CARRY THAT? No! But first it's the dirty work...literally. IS IT AMAZING ALL THE GARBAGE THAT DOESN'T FIND ITS WAY INTO THE CANS? Yes! There should be a huge fine for littering. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SMELL HERE? Horrible! It is a mixture of fair food and nasty stuff. You do get used to it but still it isn't a good smell! Just think what it would be without them! At the Fair, Perry Olson, KX News.

Video: Cattle Shows All Week from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 22, 2008 3 views / likes
Mornings are time for livestock shows here at the State Fair. Today, it was the open competition for a few different breeds. We checked out this showmanship contest that featured several young cattle handlers showing the judge what they could do. In this class, a 13-year-old girl from Upham walked away with first place - with an animal named Prime Rose. She says she has shown cattle since she was seven, and has been working with Prime Rose for a year. So, does she get nervous? It's nervous but you really want to win. But after all of it, you just most have fun. Tomorrow morning brings the 4-H and FFA Horse Show, and the Junior Steer and Heifer Show at the livestock barns.

Video: Moose Visit Cancels Baseball from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 21, 2008 3 views / likes
It was a beautiful day for baseball this morning in Minot. But the youth league games were cancelled at the Sertoma Fields on North Hill. The reason - right there - two young Moose had decided to make the fields their playground for the morning. The moose were discovered on the complex as players and officials arrived this morning. And they caused a unique cancellation. (Scott Collins, Minot Rec. Dept.) We can cancel games because of rain and lightning and everything else, but I've never had to cancel becaues of moose. (This is a first?) This is a first. Park officials opened several gates in an effort to get the two moose reunited - they were on opposite sides of a fence. And then, the plan was to block traffic in the area and try to herd the pair back toward more wild surroundings. Greg Gullickson of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department says such moose encounters are becoming more common as the animal's population increases. (Greg Gullickson, ND Game Fish Dept.) Moose are becoming more common in North Dakota, we have more hunting opportunities for moose in North Dakota. They're repopulating the prairie but one of the things about moose is that they really don't have any natural predators in North Dakota so they are relatively unuaffected by humans, are kind of mellow creatures and just kind of lope along. Anytime we get them in or around town it is a situation where we need to make sure to get them out. In the end, the moose were convinced to head away from town and back toward their rural homes. There were no injuries, although one police officer was bumped to the ground by a driver at a roadblock. He was not hurt.

Video: Joe on the Go: Monday from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 21, 2008 3 views / likes
There's an exciting new way to capture the excitement of the North Dakota State Fair and share it with your family and friends! Today, Joe Goldade is on the go and taking a look at Fair Shots! (Joe On The Go Goldade, KX News) Joe on the go again at the North Dakota State Fair again! Today, we're trying something new: Fair Shots. This is the first year for it! We just go up to the State Fair Center, check out a camera, and record our day here at the North Dakota State Fair. Let's go get one! One of the most important things to know is that it's absolutely free to check out a camera, but you must remember to bring your license and a credit card: Of course, only to make sure that no one accidentally forgets to return the camera. After that, you get a quick tutorial and it's yours to use at the fair! (Shannon Pearson, NDSF Marketing Director) We came up with this idea because we were looking for a way that people can share what they do at the fair with all of their family and friends. What we found was this very easy to use flip video camcorder. People can come to our office, check out a small flip video camera, and they can record up to 30 minutes of the best of what they do at the fair. So if you want to go on the ride, if you're going to livestock events, you can record it all and bring it back to the office. What we do edit it, cut it and we upload it to our youtube page, so you can show it to all of your family and friends! (Joe On The Go Goldade, KX News) Now that I've got my camera, I'm ready to walk around the state fairgrounds and take shots of exactly what I'm going to do today. My first stop in the fur traders rendezvous with my camera! Let's push the little red button and go record some fun in here! (Fur Traders Rendezvous Guide) It usually takes less than 30 seconds for me to start a fire using the burning glass that I have and they don't believe me! So I have somebody count and I get done and they say, Wow! That's quick! Faster than I could do with a regular match! Start counting! (Joe On The Go Goldade, KX News) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 It's already burning! That's it! I got to 5! Not on fire yet - keep counting! Ok! So we're at 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16! You started a fire in 16 seconds! He's looking a little hungry, we'll get him fed. Come here! Look what I have! There you go. Anybody want a drink? I think that guy has the right idea over there! I'm going to try to record at the same time I throw. I don't know if it would be any different anyway... I'm terrible at this! I think I'm going to have to go with the rocky road. Mmmm! Ice cream is really good! You guys want some? Don't worry! If you don't return the camera on time, it's not like they're going to lock you up. Apparently they just do this to me! I'm Joe on the Go at the North Dakota State Fair! You can check out Joe's video from the fair and see other videos at: youtube.com/ndstatefair

Video: Petting Zoo from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 19, 2008 15 views / likes
If you love going to the zoo but want to get closer to the animals, then the State Fair has just what you're looking for. Hedrick's petting zoo is located by the main entrance of fairgrounds where you can get up close and personal with over 20 species of animals for free. If you want you can even stick your hand right in the cage and feed any of the animals for just one dollar. The petting zoo has kangaroos, a camel ride, pony rides, and much, much more. It has a lot of the same animals as other zoos but you can get right in there with these friendly creatures. (Monte McClurge, Petting Zoo Manager) Every kid loves to pet animals and what makes ours pretty fun is that we have such a wide variety that a lot of adults come in here and are really amazed at all the different animals getting right up close to you I mean we've got stuff in here you've never heard of I think. Every animal here loves people, every person they meet feeds them, loves, pets on them, so they learn to love people really quick. The petting zoo is right over there and is open from 11am to 9pm every day.

Video: Fair Preps Include Lower Speeds from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 17, 2008 6 views / likes
Preparations are coming to a close inside the fairgrounds, and outside the Minot Police Department has finalized its job of making sure traffic is moving safely. Speed limits have been lowered to 25 miles an hour once again this year on Burdick Expressway with a device set up to show you how fast you are going. Chuck Laboy with the department says it is vital that drivers keep an eye on for pedestrians while driving in the area because not all of them will be looking for you. Also you'll notice a much larger police presence in the area. (Chuck Laboy - Minot Police Department) We increase patrol in this area because of the amount of traffic and pedestrians in the area. Hopefully it will be a safe fair for everyone? Yes. While the police will be busy outside the fences of the fairgrounds, it will be the Ward County Sheriff's Department making sure things go smoothly at the Fair itself.

Michelle Bliven says the Dreamcatchers look upto the MSU team and are excited to have their support and coaching. Michelle Bliven, Dreamcatchers Founder: We're really excited to have the Minot State football team play ball with the Dreamcatchers we know they can play football, but can they play baseball. I think the Minot State players will learn a lot from the Dreamcathers, they'll learn how to help other people, and I think it's good to get out of your comfort zone and go out and help somebody else and Ithink you leave the field with a better understanding and compassion of kids that may have to struggle a little bit to do things that we take for granted. You can catch some dreams tonight at the South Hill Complex, gametime is at 6:30.

Video: Counties Must Provide Tax Records from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 15, 2008 6 views / likes
Three North Dakota counties broke open records laws by overcharging for copies of tax records often used in oil exploration. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem issued opinions today saying Mountrail County tried to charge $900 for copying records that actually cost about $350. He also ruled Adams County improperly refused a request for tax records. And Stenehjem said Foster County officials must provide electronic records - county workers had said they could only make paper copies. The issue was brought to the attorney general by a company called First American Core-Logic which had requested the tax records.

Video: Farmer's Market Begins from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 15, 2008 6 views / likes
The price of produce is on the rise like most everything else in life these days so you might as well get the best you can get your hands on, right? If you answer is 'Yes', the place to be was Oak Park this morning as another season of Farmer's Markets kicked off. Growers from the region were showing off their freshly picked products today the first of the season. That meant only a few stands to choose from and a very busy first few minutes once sales were allowed. When you ask the customers, you'll quickly find out the mad dash for the goods is certainly worth it... You have to get up early to beat these people! It is worth it because homegrown stuff is fantastic especially when you have been yearning for it for years. The Farmer's Market is open each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday starting with the whistle at nine in the morning through the growing season.

Video: Bison Player In Town from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 15, 2008 6 views / likes
The NDSU competitive Football camp kicked off yesterday at Bishop Ryan and one of the coaches at this year's camp is NDSU running back Tyler Roehl. The 5'10, 232 pound senior from West Fargo is listed as one of the top 10 players to watch in the football championship subdivision for a Bison team that is ranked second in the FCS Poll. Roehl rushed for over 14 hundred yards and 21 touchdowns last season including a school record 263 yards against the University of Minnesota. The division one Bison are postseason eligible this year and although the ground game and the offensive line remain intact, the team will look to a new signal caller in Nick Mertens. Tyler Roehl, NDSU runningback:We got a new quarterback, Nick Mertens, Steve Walker's gone so Nick Mertens, a junior out of East Grand Forks will be stepping in and he's got great potential, great athleticism, cannon for an arm. He's just gotta get the repititions down. Game time situations he'll be ready to go. And we got a great line too so I think we'll have a great offense. You know we're moving into a new conference, the Missouri Valley conference. It's gonna be tough week in and week out. I think there's five teams in the conference in the top 25. Just tough football and that's what we want. We got Wyoming on the schedule too. Start out with Central Connecticut. It's just gonna be a fun year. Tough. Got elible for the playoffs so that's our main goal to make the playoffs and just move on from there. The Bison kick off their season at home against Austin Peay on August 28th.

Video: Amputee Competes in Golf Tourney from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 15, 2008 6 views / likes
Golf can be frustrating for anyone, but imagine the added frustration of playing the game with only one leg. Unfortunately, that's the reality for one former Minot-state-university>MSU art professor, but the only time you'll hear him use the term handicap, is while talking about his score. Dan Erdmann introduces us to this week's someone you should know... (Dan Erdmann, KX News) He taught art for over 35 years, but now days he's mastering another art-Golf. Tom Willis retired as a professor in 2001, and shortly after, he started having some health problems. It started with a bypass procedure, but after a number of complications, Willis underwent another surgery. (Tom Willis, Former MSU Professor) They cut off below the knee first, and then that didn't heal up, and so a couple weeks later, which is about right now of last year, they cut off above the knee. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) Although the amputation occurred recently, Willis says his complications stem from one life-long habit. (Tom Willis, Former MSU Professor) It's peripheral artery disease, most people think it's Diabetes, but basically it was from smoking, if you want to say that. How'd you do it? I say, fifty years of smoking, basically. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) But thanks to continued advances in prosthetics, Willis is equipped with a state of the art, bionic limb. (Tom Willis, Former MSU Professor) It's supposed to be the best knee in the world right now, it's called a Rhio. It's got a microprocessor, and they program it. And it's supposed to sense what I'm doing like 600 times a second. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) It can even sense things like changes in terrain and climbing stairs. But what makes Willis' leg so special, is his own, original art work, which covers the upper portion. He says it's taken some getting used to, but it's not about to keep him from the game he loves. (Tom Willis, Former MSU Professor) It was a little adjustment, but I've been playing golf since I was 12-years-old, I think. That's fifty years. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) Willis says it has added a few strokes to his game, but his is still a much better score than this reporter could ever hope for. He also has a bit of advice for anyone in a similar situation. (Tom Willis, Former MSU Professor) Don't give up man. It's like the old- 'Fall off a horse, you gotta get right back on again.' (Dan Erdmann, KX News) In this case, it's a golf cart, not a horse, but Willis has proven that any setback, even a major one, shouldn't keep you from doing what you love. And that's why we think he's someone you should know. Dan Erdmann, KX News. Willis recently competed in the George Mellem Beaver Booster Scramble at the Minot Country Club and he says he's taken part in the event for over 25 years.

Video: City & Base To Fight Mosquitoes Through Air from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 15, 2008 3 views / likes
As Minot gets set to welcome thousands of people for the North Dakota State Fair, the city is also preparing to get rid of some unwanted guests before fair-goers arrive. Tomorrow evening a mosquito spraying program will get underway with the help of the United State's Air Force. A specially equipped C-130 from Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Ohio will fly over Minot spraying a chemical that targets mosquitoes. The spraying effort has taken place in the Magic City for a number of years with positive results in mosquito reduction, but it also has raised concerns from a few people who are sensitive to chemicals. Don Teig is an Entomologist with the vector control unit out of Ohio. He says the chemical that is used is specific to mosquitoes and has no residual effect to the environment... (Don Teig, Med. Entomologist) We spray small droplets usually 30 microns or less and these adhere to the legs of the mosquitoes. That kills the mosquitoes but we only have to use a half an ounce an acre and that way we're able to control what we need to kill without causing any other harm to the environment, any harm to people or any other pets. To effectively knock down the airborne mosquitoes, the C-130 aircraft will be flying 150 feet above the city of Minot as it sprays. Flight navigator Chinky Kochansky says the flight path is much different from what most people are used to seeing over the city... (Maj. Chinky Kochansky, Navigator) Because Minot sits down in a bowl, it may appear that we're even lower. So depending on where you live on the north side of Minot, maybe on the plateau, or even on the south side on some of the hills down there it will appear that we are a lot lower than 150 feet but we are going to do our best to follow the contour of the land and that's why it may create an optical illusion where it seems that we are a lot lower than we actually are. The C-130 will be spraying over the Minot Air Force Base tonight and will begin spraying in Minot between 8 pm and 10 pm tomorrow night.

Video: Ryan Football Camp Underway from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 14, 2008 3 views / likes
The high school Football season is still about a month away from it's first practices of the year, but some area players got a jump start as the NDSU competitive football camp kicked off today at Bishop Ryan. This is the second straight year the camp has been held under the direction of former Bishop Ryan and NDSU football player Andy Delabarre who says it's a chance to start getting kids ready for the fall season. Andy Delabarre, Camp Coordinator:It's like I said, a lot of skill. Last year, both year's it's been no pads so a lot of it is skill work, a lot of drills and a lot of it is just to get them ready for football which is gonna start in about a month. And this is kind of a good refresher for them before they actually start their high school camp. Jared Essler, Camp Instructor:We're talking a lot of technique and fundamentals. You know hopefully they can take a few things with them and we try to talk general terms so it doesn't matter what type of scheme your playing but there's some football specific things hopefully they can take with them and improve on. Bryan Kramer, Ryan football coach:They put on a great camp. The kids really enjoy learning from kids who have learned from the best at NDSU. Just a super week for us. The camp continues through Wednesday on the Bishop Ryan practice field.

Video: New Williston Jail Progressing from KXMC CBS Bismarck North on July 12, 2008 9 views / likes
The problem of jail overcrowding in Williston should be relieved in a few months. That's when a new law enforcement center and jail is scheduled to open. Jim Olson toured the construction site with Williams County Sheriff Scott Busching. (Jim Olson, KX News) It was barely a year ago that Scott Busching and others held golden shovels in an empty parking lot as construction began on a new law enforcement center in Williston. (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) We've made progress (Jim Olson, KX News) And now, that lot looks like this - the outside of the new 15-million-dollar-plus facility is an imposing presence in Willilston. And the inside is coming right along too. (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) All the walls are up. (Jim Olson, KX News) The new center will bring all local law enforcement agencies into a single location (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) It'll be one-stop shopping for you law enforcement needs. (Jim Olson, KX News) Ending the life of the current home to local police and sheriff's department operations - something Busching says will be difficult, but nice (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) Things that have been stored since the early 70s, a lot of that's going out and it's going to be a good housecleaning. (Jim Olson, KX News) Back at the new facility, Busching touts the higher security compared to the current jail (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) It's a big improvement, lots of levels of security here. (Jim Olson, KX News) While the old jail had only a single security level - this one will have three - and A, B, and C level with only prisoners and guards getting into or out of the A zone. (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) That's the idea of running a good correctional facility is keeping to a minimum the people going in and out of there. (Jim Olson, KX News) The new facility also has this raised control room area that overlooks all of the cell blocks below. It provides better monitoring of prisoners with fewer guards. (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) Over a period of 20 years, the staff costs more than the building did. So we designed it for minimal staff and from up in this control room you have full view into each one of the cell blocks. (Jim Olson, KX News) And there will be room for many more prisoners to be supervised in the new jail (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) We're going from 37 to 112. (Jim Olson, KX News) Away from the most secure area, dozens of offices and other space will improve the flow of law enforcement efforts. (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) There's a hallway out of the secure jail area, down by elevator and down this hallway that goes right into the chambers of Northwest District Court. So there's very limited movement and very little action with the public. (Jim Olson, KX News) And there are a few asthetic touches too (Scott Busching, Williams Co. Sheriff) This is our one little extravagance - our little atrium here. (Jim Olson, KX News) But the top issues are security and space - both of which will increase when the construction is finally finished. In Williston, Jim Olson, KX News. The Williams County Law Enforcement Center is scheduled to open before winter this year.

Minot firefighters say more than half of a 55-gallon drum of hydrochloric acid leaked from a truck yesterday. The semitrailer was parked at a trucking company east of Minot along U.S. Highway 2 on Friday when authorities investigated. Ground where the spill occurred was cleaned up. Minot Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Beach says it isn't known whether any of the acid seeped from the truck during transit. The acid was bound for delivery to a concrete company. Hydrochloric acid can burn tissue if it contacts the skin or vapor is inhaled.

Construction is well underway in the efforts to provide spectators with safe seating and bring home Football games back to Duane Carlson Stadium. Last season, the Magicians moved their football games to Minot State University after the seating at Duane Carlson Stadium was viewed as unsafe. Not only will the new bleachers be closer to the field, the seats will be more comfortable with extra knee room and a backrest. Those who are involved in the project say it will be a great improvement for the community. (Paul Kramer, Project Architect)It is exciting, especially with the problem with the Community Bowl getting voted down. This will be a great addition for our schools, a huge upgrade for our public schools. The renovation is on schedule and set to be completed by August 26th, before the first home game. Reconstructing the foundation should be complete next week, then construction of the new bleachers will take place.
