Mother, Why Was I Circumcised?
from MacDocman's Do's and Don'ts on January 14, 2006

I decided to do a post of something I made a year ago for Dutch public broadcaster VPRO. It was never shown abroad and I think you might find this interesting. Be aware: contains some unpleasant footage. And, eeh, it's 35 minutes. But it has great subtitles! duration: 35:07 filesize: 130,9 Mb Quote from the original Press release: This is the first time that a (critical) film about the circumcision of boys has been made in the Netherlands, and this broadcast led to a strong public debate. In this broadcast, a number of questions are put to the MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, which she subsequently put to the Minister of Health. (Ayaan Hirsi Ali is the controversial Dutch MP who made the film Submission with filmmaker Theo van Gogh, who was subsequently murdered by a muslim fanatic). On Friday, 17 December 2004, the Minister decided to exclude the circumcision of boys from the Dutch National Health insurance scheme. 90% of the circumcisions were carried out for religious, rather than health reasons.

I decided to do a post of something I made a year ago for Dutch public broadcaster VPRO. It was never shown abroad and I think you might find this interesting. Be aware: contains some unpleasant footage. And, eeh, it’s 35 minutes. But it has great subtitles! (Another reason for publishing). duration: 35:07 filesize: 130,9 Mb   A copy of the original Press release   VPRO television (The Netherlands)   Het Geluk van Nederland (Holland’s Happiness): Mother, why was I circumcised?   Broadcast a barbarian ritual. But the circumcision of boys (as far as is known, the world’s oldest surgical procedure) is something we don’t talk about. At least, that’s what you might think. But the report that Schaap made for ‘Het Geluk van Nederland’ shows clearly that this idea is completely wrong. In the USA, where the circumcision of boys is a business with an annual turnover of more than 1,000 million dollars, it is definitely starting to become the subject of a fierce and emotional debate.   In the USA, many lawsuits are in progress, against doctors, hospitals, and parents. But here in Europe it remains remarkably quiet around the subject. Perhaps this is because it is regarded as an odd custom of Jews and Moslems; and, what the heck, they’re odd anyway. But even this turns out to be a mistaken assumption. In the UK, a club such as NORM - National Organisation for Restoring Men – is very active (“we want it back!”); and here in The Netherlands too, there proves to be an ongoing discussion between doctors and ethicists.   Schaap adopts a clear point of view. It cannot be denied that the circumcision of boys is an infringement of their physical integrity. For boys, it is an unasked-for intervention with no medical justification, but with far-reaching consequences.   Participants in the programme include Nico Vissel (surgeon and formerly Jewish religious circumciser), Abdulwahid van Bommel (imam), Ayaan Hirsi Ali (the controversial Dutch MP who made the film ‘Submission’ with the filmmaker Theo van Gogh, who was subsequently murdered by a muslim fanatic), Leo Mock (historian and expert on the Talmud), Marilyn Milos (the godmother of the anti-circumcision movement in the USA), Dr. Peter Ball (who developed a new foreskin for himself as a result of three years of stretching), and, last but not least, Michael’s mother.   Postscript   This is the first time that a (critical) film about the circumcision of boys has been made in the Netherlands, and this broadcast led to a strong public debate.
