Is Fast-Food as Bad as Booze from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on October 08, 2008 3 views / likes
Because there is a proliferation of foods that are bad for us everywhere the main ones being that contain a lot of fat and sugar, not only do these foods make us put on weight they can also cause other damage as well it is now possible. To cause harm to your liver even if you don t drink a lot because we eat a lot of fat and sugary foods, and a lot of us eat far more than we should per daily allowance of fat. Then it is not surprising that some people are showing the early stages of fatty liver if you are overweight and have been eating a fatty diet for quite some time, then there is every possibility that your liver may have suffered some damage. In a recent study that has come to light some people were told to eat fast-food twice a day for a month, and only after a week their livers were showing damage even in this short space of time. The report was based on a study which involved 34 Swedish people, and the effects that eating a diet which was high in saturated fat and what effect it had on their livers, and exercise was kept to a bare minimum. After a month they had blood tests which measures liver enzyme levels to see if what damage may have been done it was found that there was they increase, in blood liver enzymes probably higher than what they would be normally. This evidence does prove the point that eating a diet that is high in saturated fats will do you no good in the long-term, in the study there were 12 healthy man and six healthy women. And these were put together with a similar match of people in the same age group and same ages, so one group of 18 people was asked to eat two fast-food meals per day and to do very little exercise, it was suggested that they do no more than 5000 steps per day. During the study their weight was taken, there abdomen were measured and they also had liver blood test function tests done, in order to compare results later on when the study had finished. After the four-week month period was over results were analyzed to see what difference there were, the group who had ate the fast-food, there weight went from 67 kilograms to 74 kilograms. And there liver blood test results which came back showed a very significant increase in something calledALT which is normally associated with people who have liver disease brought on by excessive alcohol consumption. There have been other claims to back up this theory as well if you haven t seen Morgan Spurlock’s documentary about eating fast-food for a similar period of time, they actually measured his blood liver enzymes, it wasn t to long before his liver started to show elevated levels associated with liver disease or hepatitis as this otherwise known as. If you are eating a high-fat diet then it is never too late to change your lifestyle your liver is one of the most important organs within your body it does a awful lot of important functions some I dare say that you probably don t even think about. It really does pay to look after it because it is a important part of the digestive process livers don t like to be overwhelmed with high toxins like sugar and fat and whatever may else be in today s manufactured mutant frankenstein food. There are quite a lot of foods that you can eat which are good for your liver here are just a few and I dare say this list is not exhaustive by any means. onions dandelion Tea garlic high Fibre Bread Lots of water to flush toxins out broccoli brussel sprouts cabbage cauliflower beans peas sweetcorn whole meal pitta bread tomatoes sweet potatoes kale turnips hot water with some some fresh lemon juice apples pears look after your liver you only get one and it works better on a healthier diet. Gi Diet Plan Day One from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on October 03, 2008 3 views / likes
I did a series of posts a while back now which revolved around eating a high fibre diet so decided to do a another 7 day series of posts but this time its based on the G.I diet, you don t have to stick to it rigidly just add or take away things that you may or may not like. So here is day ones menu Breakfast Porridge oats (oatmeal ) With some fruit of your choice, mixed with water and skimmed milk this is purely a personal choice, I make mine with water and sometimes use milk but not always. I add sweetener to my porridge it just gives it that small lift . Some fat free yogurt and add some sweetener for flavour, 5 tablespoons of almonds and some more fresh fruit Mid Morning Snack One Apple Lunch Salad Some iceburg lettuce or round lettuce leaves, a carrot sliced or grated 1/2 of a either a red, green, yellow pepper, a tomato cut into 4 quarters, a quarter of a cucumber sliced,a sliced red onion, put all this in a bowl and toss to mix it. And add some Vinaigrette here is a basic recipe for that if you don t have one or know how to make it. You will need two tablespoons of vinegar, one tablespoon of olive oil, half a table spoon of mustard, a small amount of salt, a small amount of black pepper, some dried herbs place all in a bowl and mix to combine. Then you will have your salad dressing you could always use low fat salad cream or mayonaise. Mid Afternoon Snack One Pear Dinner/Tea Salmon steak served with garden peas make sure you have more peas to keep the balance right and serve with a sweet potato mashed, you can cook these in the microwave or peel and boil them. Is it Healthy To Eat a Lot of Eggs ? from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on October 03, 2008 6 views / likes
In the past there has been many, debates and arguments amongst professionals as to whether or not eggs are a healthy food or not. It has been often said that they contain too much cholesterol, or you may be at risk of getting salmonella and eating them a lot might do your health some harm, but someone now just recently has been eating eggs for their dietary requirements. They ate three eggs for breakfast, three for lunch, three for dinner his wife claimed that he was completely mad eating such a diet, but here is the surprising thing it helped him lose a lot of weight. It helped him lose four stone in a period of nine months. Would eating this amount of eggs be necessarily good feel health ? after all the health scares that we have had that have been connected with them such as salmonella but it would seem that has been put way in the past we as a country now in the United Kingdom consume over 28 million eggs per day. If that doesn t say that we don t give them our approval than what does, quite a while back now I wrote a post called why we need to eat more eggs, in it I explained that if you eat eggs for lunch say, you are far less likely to eat more food later on that day. The reason that eggs have come so popular in recent years is that it has been found that they aren t nearly as bad for you as previously thought, where previously it was thought that if you ate more than three a week, it was suggested that this might increase your blood cholesterol levels, so we were advised it was better to eat them in moderation overall. The governments overseeing body of food health says that as long as you eat eggs, as part of a balanced healthy diet then there is no need to worry about the amount that you can eat. Eggs got a bit of a bad name in the past because as we have said they were reported to raise your blood cholesterol levels, but it has now been found that is done by merely other foods due to the extensive research that has been done, in which foods do in fact raise your blood cholesterol levels. These tend to be more foods like processed meats, cakes, and biscuits and the cholesterol that is in eggs is nowhere near as bad as some of those other foods previously mentioned. Knowing this might be very pleasing for some people whom previously thought that they are unable to eat eggs in large quantities, if you were to eat nine eggs a day as is suggested by the person who decided to try this diet. As a long as you stick to the guidelines for healthy eating then there is no reason why, you could to follow this if you want to. Some research was conducted by Dr Bruce Griffin who looked at the data of egg research which was comprised of 30 egg studies over a 30 year period. Found that there was no actual links to high cholesterol levels or any links to coronary heart disease as far as eating eggs is concerned, and other study which was done which revolved around eating eggs, found that people who didn t eat eggs and those who did had no different cholesterol levels than those who did eat them. In more further research done by Dr Griffin he found out that people who ate two eggs per day it might help lower their cholesterol levels. He conducted research and gave some overweight people two eggs a day for a 12 week period, and another group followed a diet recommended by the British Heart Foundation. When they had completed the study period they had lost between seven to nine pounds, and also had a drop in their average cholesterol levels, he said that “We ve shown that when two eggs a day are eaten by people actively losing weight on a calorie-restricted diet, blood cholesterol and weight can be reduced.” Eggs are very low in calories one egg is only 75 calories and contains five grams of fat, in another study which was conducted in the United States they looked at the breakfast eating habits of obese and overweight women. Their findings showed that when they had a bagel breakfast and then had a egg breakfast, the women who ate the egg breakfast, didn t want to snack on fatty foods, they also said that they felt fuller for a longer period of time. The overall reason for this is because protein takes longer to break down in your body, and also acts as a bit of metabolism boosting effect this is why bodybuilders eat a high protein diet when they are in intensive training, especially if they enter competitions for showing their bodies off. This is exactly what they will tend to do they will eat some carbohydrates, but only in moderation and focus on eating more protein this will build muscle and not increase fat layers. So is the nine egg a day diet a good want to follow not necessarily I would probably say after a period of time you will get bored of it. And also you will properly not get adequate vitamins and minerals which you get from a healthy balanced diet, having a diet which is mostly protein can cause problems, you have to have some carbohydrate in your diet, as well as fibre and a small amount of fat, this is a basis for a healthy balanced diet. However this doesn t mean to say that you can t follow the diet per se but use it as a basis for your overall eating eating plan, if you become more aware of the foods which don t make you crave things like sugar and fatty foods, then you will find that the more educated that you become about eating food. Then it will be far easier to lose weight in the long-term all you need to do is find out which particular foods give the best results it may be a different case for different people. Which is the best way to eat eggs ? In order to get the best out of eggs it is probably a good idea to know which methods are particularly better for eating your eggs cooking or poaching your eggs is the healthiest way to eat them, if you make scrambled eggs with full fat milk, cream and butter. Then you re looking at something around the region of 316 calories per serving. It is probably far better to scramble eggs using semi skimmed milk and just two eggs or another just in case you need a bit extra for another person, when I make scrambled eggs I just do it in the microwave oven, using a plastic container some semi skimmed milk and two eggs whisked them together and and cook it for about four minutes this is using a 650 watt oven. Once they are cooked I then use a fork to just stir the mixture and this creates the scrambled eggs, sometimes I have also added some mushrooms to it which is quite nice and serve it with wholemeal bread with no butter on, this is a matter of personal choice purely. So the moral of the story of this post is don t worry too much about eating eggs because they are not as bad for you as is once thought so eat as many as you want, because ultimately they will help you in an aid to losing weight. What Is the Zone Diet from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on October 01, 2008 6 views / likes
The zone diet is something that has been put together by somebody called Dr Barry Sears, how it works as the name implies is you eat in zones. Here are some of the basic zone rules. Eat something within one hour of waking up make sure you have a meal between a four to six hour period, or eat two to two and a half hours after a snack even if you are not hungry keep in mind whether you are hungry or not and see how your mental focus seems to be, if you are feeling all right then you are said to be staying in the zone have eight glasses of water a day make sure every meal you eat has plenty of low-fat protein and even this out with, low G.I carbohydrate foods, if you are not sure what these are look around on the Internet so you know which foods. Release their sugar slowly those are the sort of foods that you are looking at. also make sure that your portions of food can fit into the palm of a hand, and divide your plate up into three quarters in your mind, so that one third of it is protein and the other quarters contain low G. I carbohydrates and vegetables. Make sure that you have more vegetables than carbohydrates. What you do when you re making up a zone meal is divide the food into blocks so you have three blocks of protein three blocks of carbohydrate and three blocks of fat. See image below for how your plate should be divided. So a typical lunch will look something like this. Three ounces of chickens which will account for three protein blocks. Then three blocks of carbohydrate which can be accounted for by three cups of asparagus, and three fat blocks which you can use three tablespoons full of olive oil. If you were to make a snack using this particular method you would have something like this three ounces of tuna which would make up your three protein blocks, some celery which would make up your carbohydrate blocks, and one third of some more olive oil which would make up your fat block. Here is a typical zone diet day so you can get a feeling yourself for what is involved. Breakfast Would be a six egg whites omelet, with asparagus and twos teaspoonful of olive oil, and some strawberries. So here you have your eggs which are your protein, asparagus which is carbohydrate, olive oil which is fat and strawberries which are carbohydrate again. Lunch Lunch would be a grilled chicken, with some side salad olive oil and some fruit, so here still you are getting all three blocks chicken is protein, olive oil is fat, and the fruit is carbohydrate. Afternoon snack This would consist of two hard-boiled eggs, where you take the yolk out, and put in a filling of mashed chickpeas and some hummus, with some olive oil. So you are getting your three blocks again. Dinner Some salmon covered with some almonds, some steamed vegetables, and some berries mixed for your desert. Evening Snack This would consist of some soft cheese approximately one ounce, a glass of wine and one small piece of fruit. If you would like some examples of what to eat using the zone diet here is a brief summary of what you will need. Shopping List Fruits Apples Blueberries lemons nectarines raspberries grapes peaches plums strawberries pineapple apple’s royal gala oranges Dairy produce Low-fat cottage cheese plain low-fat yoghurt cheese low-fat cheddar cheese which is fat free eggs Meat/poultry Chicken turkey breast turkey bacon which is low-fat Vegetables All the vegetables you would normally eat Brussel sprouts parsnips broccoli beans runner beans cabbage lettuce carrotts Bottled items Applesauce vinegar olives tarragon capers vanilla extract olive’s dill water, lemon and lime red wine vinegar apple cider tabasco sauce peanut butter vinegar unsweetened rice tahini sesame roasted water pure bottled. This is just to give you a basic outline of what you need you can sign up on the site and there is no charge to view this information as that is how I got it by joining up. And it may give you some ideas if your eating plan isn’t working. Here is the site address in case your interested. http://www.zonediet.com Tags: diet

How To Quit Sugar Addiction from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 29, 2008 9 views / likes
Sugar is a modern day 21st-century problem, we can t help ourselves when it comes to the sweet stuff, one of the particular problems with sugar is it can be addictive as some well-known drugs. Hence a lot of people struggle with kicking a sugar habit. It’s getting so bad now that obesity levels are rocketing all over the world, because of the amount of sugar that we now consume in our foods which comes about by modern day food processing methods. The overall problem with this is, carbohydrates get turned into refined carbohydrates hence sugar, the problem is that a lot of foods can taste quite bland without any additional flavouring, and sugar just happens to be one of those cheap ingredients that you can add to a particular product. In order to make it more palatable to a lot of people they add sugar in order, to make the food taste better otherwise some food can taste quite bland, so people are far less likely to eat it. It is very easy to become addicted to sweet foods it’s just the taste we just cannot help ourselves. But we very rarely think of the consequences that are involved by eating too much of these particular foods. So what is the overall attraction of sugar and why do we want to eat so much, perhaps many years ago when we had no food processing, and we were foraging for our food in a natural environment. Then our taste buds would be more programmed to eat things of a sweeter taste rather than bitter tasting foods, as we would probably think that bitter tasting foods would be more likely to poison us. We would have had no real way of knowing whether or not something was bad for us, but if you think about fruit for a second, quite a lot it of is sweet. So we probably used that as a rule of thumb as to what to eat. So it s probably true to say that our taste buds, were developed to ensure that we ate foods that wouldn t poison us merely for our own survival. But now the problem with this is it’s tending to work in reverse and making us become obese and diabetic. Sugar is everywhere and in everything from chocolate, to soft drinks, cakes, biscuits there aren t many food substances that it isn t in. Before the Industrial Revolution came in the only way that we would eat sugar would be in its raw state, in such things as rice, potatoes , bread pasta etc, then we discovered how to process food and was able to turn unprocessed sugar into processed sugar. Where does it begin ? The first time your body gets hit with its first fix of sugar is usually first thing in the morning when you eat breakfast, even they you think you may be getting away with it. If you add things like dried fruits to your breakfast let s just say for instance that you eat muesli, and add some fruit to it, for instance raisins. Then already you are starting to increase blood sugar levels without even probably realising that you are doing it, some people like to have, a couple of spoonfuls sugar with their first cup of tea and coffee in the morning. Or they might like to add some sugar to their porridge just to make it taste that more palatable, before I was diagnosed with high blood sugar I used to do the very same thing, having some toast with marmalade on it, you are already on to a bit of a sugar fest already without even realising it. The overall problem with these sort of habits is you very rarely tend to think that they are doing you any harm. When in fact nothing is further from the truth, I quite often used to eat white bread with butter and jam. The taste of it on my taste buds was so yummy, I couldn t help myself. I think probably this was one of the reasons why I used to crave sugar so much, because when you eat it your blood sugar goes high insulin kicks in, to keep your blood sugar levels normal. So it comes back down to normal levels and then you get the cravings all over again because your sugar levels have gone down. I used to get cravings for sugar all the time but never really understood why perhaps now thinking about it I can see a overall pattern, I do eat the odd sweet thing every now and again, but nothing like I used to. it can be quite surprising when you think about it how much sugary foods you do eat without even realising. Due to the fact that sugar is so addictive someone has bought a book out which is aptly called How To Quit Without Feeling S**t, by Patrick Alford, you see the thing is when the insulin is removing the sugar from your bloodstream it has to put it somewhere, so as a consequence of this its stores it as fat. And hence we become overweight. So how do you go about keeping things in balance as far as your blood sugar is concerned, you have to you keep your body fed properly in order to keep up energy levels, but if you eat foods that get processed quickly within your bloodstream, than what will ultimately happen is. Over a short period of time you will want to eat even more food in order to keep your energy levels constant, this is a classic symptom of the sugar cycle you eat some food feel energetic for a while, although we have to take into consideration what it was you actually ate, if it was a baked potato for instance with some butter, then this type of meal will be processed quite quickly. And it won t be too long before you are wanting to eat some more food. And so the cycle repeats itself however if you were to balance your foods more, and add protein to your meal and make sure you eat more of it, then this will break down a lot slower in your bloodstream. Therefore inhibiting any further cravings for food later on in the day. Studies have found in the past that even non-obese people who have ate a lot of carbohydrate foods the ones that release their sugars very quickly, have also become insulin resistant and contracted diabetes so don t just think that because you are thin that you can’t get diabetes because you can. There tends to be a direct relationship between how you are feeling as a person and what you eat, sometimes people turn to things like chocolate etc when they are feeling down or fed up and want something to cheer themselves up, sugar tends to be a perfect candidate for this because it gives you a quick serotonin buzz, and your mind tends to latch on to this fact. And makes you repeat the process which in essence is the start of a addiction. There are quite a few ways in order to cut your carbohydrate levels down, take note of what you are eating, for instance bread especially white bread, or you can go on a diet plan which cuts out carbohydrates altogether such as the Atkins diet this tends to focus on protein more than carbohydrates, the problem with this is though it has made some people quite ill and is not suitable for everybody. The other alternative is to try something like the G. I diet which is based around low GI foods which in a nutshell means that they release their sugar levels slowly over a longer period of time, which will stop cravings for sweet foods. And overtime you will tend to lose weight what I would say is the key thing is to be sensible, when I first started to try and lose weight myself I had to look at what I was eating very carefully. One thing I wasn t doing in particular was, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, which I very rarely used to eat, things like salads and soup, as soon as I switched to eating more low GI foods. I did tend to feel a lot better, and also I tended to eat far less, when you are eating a lot of high of carbohydrate foods especially the wrong types then you will inevitably eat more food. The thing that you must bear in mind is to cut down on the foods that have lots of sugar in. If you want a typical example here is one, anything that has 35 to 40 grams per hundred grams is a lot of sugar. I used to think that eating small tins of baked beans was a bad thing but I was told by my doctor that those things aren t nearly as bad as you think they are. If you compare it to strawberry jam the amount of sugar that is in that is horrendous I think you get the overall picture. Actually getting off sugar isn t as bad as what you think it is, some schoolchildren were weaned off it slowly even though they did have a few withdrawal symptoms they weren t very long in lasting, give it about four or five days and you will be fine. How to stop sugar cravings If you are having trouble trying to stop your sugar problem here are the a few suggestions that you might like to try in order to curb them. If you go to the supermarket things can be strategically placed in order to try make you buy them, say for instance at the end of a isle. There might be some special offers at the end the isle. You see as you are walking along in the shop, they are in your first line of sight on the left as you come into the shop so subconsciously your mind sees them, and also they are at the end of the isle waiting for you. And then again they may hit you with them at the checkout, so you must just ignore them and tell yourself that you don t need them this will train your mind to ignore what is before you. Look at what you are eating, for your breakfast if you are eating something like Cocoa Pops, or Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, which are very high sugar and try replacing this with some other substitute such as wholemeal bread and scrambled egg or another alternative is porridge oats with some sweetener in. Have small meals often snack on pears and apples these type of foods release sugar more slowly, replace these foods with for things that you would normally snack on like chocolate and so forth, sometime cravings for sugar can be due to certain vitamins missing within your diet do some research to see if this the case. Use sweeteners instead of sugar when you add this to coffee or sugar there really isn’t a great deal of difference. Drinks less things with caffeine in coffee and tea drunk in high volumes can cause blood sugar highs and lows. Drink green tea instead this will help repair any damage. Also try cinnamon this can help with blood sugar levels. Above all use common sense high constant blood sugar is not good long term. Change now before it’s to late Source http://www.independent.co.uk Tags: diabetes, insulin, processed, sugar

When I buy particular foods I don t always go for known brand names, the baked beans that we buy come from Sainsbury s and I can honestly say that I can tell any difference between, the better well known brands that are sold. As far as yoghurt is concerned I think you are probably far better off buying some plain yoghurt and adding your own fruit, so at least you know then that you are adding nutritional value to it, and really the moral of the story to take away from this is to read the nutritional label on the back. Which so very few of us do I think when a lot of people go shopping, because there is so many people that go to supermarkets these days at any one time, it tends to turn into a bit of a commando raid and you just get your food without even looking at the nutritional content of what you re buying. And myself I think this sometimes is a big downfall for a lot of people, because once you are consciously aware of what you are eating it is far easier to lose weight. The best real alternative is to buy natural foods only and that way then you know what you are getting, it doesn t take that much effort to cook foods from their raw state, food manufacturers have long realised that, people are lazy so this is why they keep. Producing all the TV dinners that you see because they know they are convenient for modern day people and their lifestyles, who can t be bothered to cook. Why do you think that those people that you see in town centres that collect data and ask certain questions about things, it s because the data that comes back from the market research is used to find out about what we do and how we decide, how and what to buy. And there is such a thing now that people will monitor, you re buying habits and come up to you and ask you why you re buying a particular product, I don t know whether they are called supermarkets psychologists or not but their sole job is to find out what you make you purchase the item. Or not as the case may be in a nutshell it’s basically about finding what you want, and making it as convenient as possible as it is for you. This Food is about money and that is all the food manufacturers are not interested in your health. Source http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk No tag for this post.

Rise of The Teletubbys from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 24, 2008 12 views / likes
We have a generation of up and coming obese children these days, and this is probably mainly due to the fact that they don t exercise like they should do, unlike they did in years gone by. It has been recently reported that the amount of time that modern-day children spend actually doing exercise is at it s lowest levels in a long time. A lot of parents these days grossly under estimate how much exercise their children are actually doing, which is putting their children on a obesity timebomb, which is ticking away without even them realising it.The study which was done from corresponding universities Glasgow and Newcastle proved that many six and seven-year-olds are dangerously under active, what they managed to evaluate from the study was that by the year 2010. A lot of children will be overweight unless they actually start to do some physical activity, children are supposedly supposed to do one hour’s exercise either running around or playing with their friends, or whatever it is they like to do. Government figures have shown that six to seven-year-olds tend to be active for 146 minutes each day. But this research that has come to light has said that girls have roughly 22 minutes and boys only 26 minutes exercise per day. The researchers used a device which is called a accelerometer which measured their overall activity throughout the day. Children are being advised to take lesser car journeys and parents please take note here, how many of you take your children to school in a car when they could be walking or going on their bike instead. It has become apparent that the child obesity problem has been overlooked very much so by the government. It would seem times are changing very much so compared to how they were when I was younger. There didn t seem to be many days go by where I wasn t on my pushbike, playing football, playing cricket, or just generally running around playing games. I can quite honestly say I used to be all over the place, I don t think children these days play games like I used to when I was younger. Which involved moving around a lot, it does make me wonder if they actually had to do a cross-country run, like we used to have to do I dare say most of them. Wouldn t even get past the first part of it let alone complete it. I sometimes wonder if it s not being cool being a person who looks after your health. Or are you somebody that might be called a sissy if you are doing regular exercise. Or is it merely just a sign of the times that our children are growing to grow up, as obese adults and contract diseases such as type two diabetes, heart problems and all the other things which are associated with being overweight. I suppose when you have the choice between sitting down and playing a computer game for hours and hours, or playing a Xbox game with your friends online. Then getting some exercise outside probably does seem quite boring compared to doing that. The problem is we really do need to educate our children to what will happen to them if they don t start to move around a lot more than they are now. Here are some other things I used to do when I was younger I wonder if the children of today even attempt half of these. Cycling where ever I went long and short distances Swimming Playing football Judo Walking to the swimming baths Cross-country runs Physical education twice a week at school Rugby Cricket Doing errands for my parents Delivering newspapers in all weathers I might add Scout camping Sponsored walks Thinking about it now I never even realised how much I used to do compared to what I do now. Perhaps as people overtime we tend to think that we can get away with doing very little activity when in fact nothing is further from the truth So it s time to take action now rather than later Source the current bun sorry Sun newspaper Tags: Exercise

Worlds Fattest Man uses Diet and Exercise To Lose Weight.!!!! from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 22, 2008 18 views / likes
On my travels through cyberspace this morning, I came across a very inspiring story about the world s fattest man, and how he managed to lose weight, how he actually managed to do this is incredible to say the least without using what would be the by far the easiest way to lose weight for somebody in his position would be surely to have a gastric bypass operation. But the man in question decided against it Manuel Uribe 42 from Mexico, for one stage to get ready for this weighed in at an incredible 90 stone that is literally half a ton and this to me is by far the most inspirational part of the story using diet and exercise alone he has managed to shed an incredible 41 stone, this is not only inspirational but somewhat amazing also. Mr Uribe was recommended to have a gastric bypass operation but refused to the astonishment of his doctors, Mexican doctors put him on a low carbohydrate high protein diet for two years, and has quite literally amazed his doctors by achieving such a phenomenal task in such a short space of time. He says he is now going to throw a big party to celebrate such a amazing achievement and start going out the house for walks were as before he couldn t since he began his weight loss journey he has set up a website so people can track his progress online. In March of this year he will be lifted out of his house on a crane and driven round the streets of his local town he did this before when he reached his 60 stone goal he says he now feels great better than ever so if you re struggling to lose weight then this must be one of the most inspiring stories you re probably read in a long time I must say it certainly opened my eyes to what can be done when you put your mind to it in a word I think this is truly an amazing achievement. Diabetes The Facts And The Fiction from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 22, 2008 18 views / likes
Diabetes is on the increase there is no doubt about that, but is it becoming a postcode disease like a lot of others that we hear about nowadays, if you live in the more affluent areas such as places like Kensington, Chelsea in London. Some of the people who live in these particular areas didn t even realise that they had it. It certainly is a common thing these days for people to have diabetes and not even realise it, the main problem being is that the symptoms are very hard to detect especially when you re dealing with type two diabetes. Which is most commonly known as adult onset diabetes, this can affect most people as they get older in life? The main reasons for the causes of diabetes are eating too many foods that have high sugar content, such as cakes, biscuits, and high sugar drinks like Coca-Cola etc. Also being overweight is a major contributing factor when it comes to contracting diabetes. A lot of it can be self inflicted, if you have a waistline that is above 37 inches for men and 35 inches for women then you may be more at risk of getting the disease yourself, eating a high sugar, high cholesterol diet is a surefire combination to encourage it. This and a lack of exercise will also, be a major contributing factor. A lot of people tend to think that diabetes just means injecting yourself with insulin because your body can t produce any, while this may be due to a certain extent it isn t the be all and end all, and isn’t the case when you have type two diabetes, if you are careful in managing it properly. By watching what you eat and getting a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise per day, five times a week then you are far more likely to keep it under control, and hopefully shouldn t be having to inject yourself with insulin regularly. The Myths of Diabetes Eating too much chocolate causes it While this may be due to a certain extent and doesn t necessarily help matters, what happens when you have diabetes is your body doesn t produce enough insulin which is used to, ensure sugar take up in your body cells, so when you move about and exercise. The sugar is used for energy and is not in your body, having too much access sugar in your blood can cause problems to your internal organs. It could be due to the fact that you may have a genetic cause of the disease rather than a age related one. Diabetes can be passed on to other people There could be nothing more further than the truth, if you are into fairytales then this must be one of the biggest ones there is. Diabetes is not a airborne or physically contracted disease. So you won t catch it from other people. The most important thing is to keep your blood sugar levels stable Although this is an important factor don t be too surprised if you have to visit your GP or health care professional, and they start to talk about high fatty foods, how much you weigh, and what exercise you do the problem with diabetes is, that it tends to make your blood become very sticky, and the problem with this is that it tends to fur up your arteries easier. With plaques of cholesterol so even though blood sugar is a important factor in diabetes management, it is not the only thing that you need to think about as well. You have to you eat special diabetic foods Nothing could be further from the truth, if you look at how much special diabetic foods cost, you will probably realise that they are what they are just cashing in on a ready available market, as long as you stick to a sensible diet, which mostly avoids things like high processed carbohydrate foods, which are high in refined sugar. And eat more natural foods like fruit and vegetables, you shouldn t have too much of a problem. If you are not exactly sure what to eat, speak to a dietician or get some advice from your healthcare professional, as to which foods you should be eating as far as diabetes is concerned. Diabetes is something you can t prevent from happening I m afraid the obvious answer here is yes you can very much so, and don t let any thing or anyone else tell you any different. The simplest things to do here are look at your waist size, by using a tape measure and measuring the widest part of your abdomen just below your belly button and see what your waist size is. If it’s over 35 inches for a woman and 37 for a man and your overweight then there is a risk factor. If you are about 40 or over how much exercise are you doing ? are you doing any at all. Do you eat lots of food that is highly processed with refined carbohydrates in or put simply that are full of sugar and fat, do you eat lots of cakes, biscuits and chocolate. If the answer is yes then it may be time to take a visit to the doctors, for a blood test , normally you will be asked to have a fasting blood test. Or sometimes you will be asked to drink some high sugar content drink then come back, and then you will have a blood test. Of which you will get the results in about roughly a weeks time. The good news is if you catch it early and are diagnosed as being pre-diabetic, which in a nutshell means you are on the verge of becoming diabetic, in most cases it is possible to reverse this situation, as long as you take the advice of your health care professional and/or GP and make radical changes to your exercise and diet regime. Then hopefully you should be all right in a matter of time. The key thing here is to be responsible and just don t think I will be all right. When you crave sweet foods it s a sign that you may have diabetes. This does not necessarily have to be the case it could be due to the fact that, you may have certain that mineral or vitamin deficiencies. Which could cause you to have cravings for sugar quite naturally? You re far more likely to have these sort of symptoms when you have diabetes. Feeling thirsty a lot of the time, you may feel lethargic, be more prone to having infections for longer periods of time than normal, wee a lot more than normal. It may show up as a eye problem or you may have problems of a sexual nature especially, as far as men are concerned getting erect. Here s a thought if your concerned about ending up on Viagra then try to avoid becoming a diabetic if that isn t a huge incentive I don t know what is. Another thing that people don t actually realise about diabetes is that insulin tends to be a fat storage hormone. So if you are eating lots of sugary type foods then you are basically telling your body to store fat, also if you have lots of insulin in your blood it can tend to make you feel more hungry than normal so here is yet another clue that you may need to consider. Photo Diaries a Better aid to Weight Loss from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 19, 2008 12 views / likes
Using conventional means say for instance roughly guessing what you eat per day or week, is it possible to accurately record what you are actually eating, some people have great success by using a conventional means of a food diary. In order to chart their progress as to regard what they are eating on a day or weekly basis, but is this necessarily the best way to record your progress. It would now seem that this is not the case, some research has been done in the United States that suggests otherwise what they say is if you take pictures of your food before you eat it. It is a far better way of tracking what you eat than other conventional methods, a woman was asked to keep photos of what she ate day during a day, it was quite a shock for the woman who participated in the one-day period. She actually thought that she was eating 2300 calories a day, but she found out that she was eating three times more than the recommended daily calorie intake for herself, she was found to be eating 6,083 calories instead. The photographs actually reminded her of the snacks that she binged on which otherwise might have not been counted by conventional means, or it might have been the case that she just wouldn t of taken note of it and thought she was eating far less than she originally was. Prof Lydia Zepedia and David Zeal who conducted the study said that people see diaries as a way of recording things, and added that when people write things in food diaries, they tend to do it hours after they have eaten the food, so it could be misleading for the person who might forget about the odd snack or two that they ate in between meals. People use food diaries as a recording tool but should be made aware that photo diaries are a much better intervention tools. To use to track your weight loss, when you can actually see what you ve eaten it puts it into perspective far more. How many of us actually start a food diary and then slack off or forget to fill it in. Here is what the Corinna ate in a day. 7 a.m. Three slices of toast with jam and butter 8 a.m. Coffee milk and sugar 8:30 a.m Coffee milk and sugar 9:00 a.m Coffee milk and sugar 10:30 a.m. Breakfast cob with egg, bacon, sausage and mushroom 12:30 p.m. McDonald s big Mac, fries and strawberry milkshake and apple pie. 1:30 p.m. Coffee milk with sugar 2:30 p.m. Coffee milk and sugar and a Mars bar 3:45 p.m. Coffee milk and sugar 6 p.m. Fish and chips with mushy peas and two slices of white bread with butter 7 p.m. One bag of boiled sweets, mint humbugs 8 p.m. One bottle of cider and two cans of lager 9 p.m. One large mug of drinking chocolate with four chocolate digestive biscuits What this does prove is that you can never be too careful about what you re eating because things can be so deceptive and sometimes you are just not aware of what you are actually eating. Even though you actually think you may be on top of what you are eating, it mounts up without even you realising it. So time to get the digital camera out and start recording what you re eating.

Can Too Much Thinking Make You Fatter from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 17, 2008 12 views / likes
Just recently some research that has been put together in Canada has suggested that this might be the case, due to the fact that a lot of jobs in our society these days are not labour-intensive, like they were many years ago we have far more automation these days than we used to years ago. We no longer need secretaries to type documents for us because word processors make it so easy to format and produce professional looking documents, there are many other areas where this is true also, with a click of a button you can now send a message anywhere in the world or to the particular country you live in within seconds. The object of the study was to find out what impact it had upon your glucose, and your energy intake they used 14 female students, and they were assembled into three groups. Their body mass index was measured as being a very low 22.4, they performed the following tasks from each group for a period of 45 minutes, sitting in a resting position, reading a document or writing some sort of summary, and doing a computerised test which tested their memory, attention span etc. They had four blood ingredients measured plasma, glucose, insulin, and cortisol which is the stress hormone, they were then told to eat as much they possibly could when they had finished the various sessions which were 45 minutes each. The the females that performed the intensive computer tasks which would have used more brain concentration, ate approximately 253 calories more than the, group who were reading and doing summaries, and also ate, approximately 203 calories more than the group whom were resting. It was proven that the group whom were doing the more intensive brain activity used more glucose as the brain needs glucose the more work it does. So we really need to take away from this that at times we do need to go for a walk at dinner time if it is possible. Here is some food for though hands up how many people eat food at their computer, or have lunch ordered and eat it at their workstation whilst working perhaps this is another reason for our growing obesity epidemic, it s not until things like this are put before us that we realise that, it is actually affecting us I don t actually know what the statistics are. But more and more people are choosing to work from home and we also use computers at work far more now than ever before they are a commonplace item where ever you go most industries do use them, and I can honestly say that there doesn t seem to be more much of a slowdown as far as that is concerned. Our lives have changed over the last 20 years and technology is I would say to blame to some extent as regards our current obesity problem throughout the world. Can Exercise Alter Obesity Genes from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 15, 2008 9 views / likes
Trying to lose weight is one of the hardest things to accomplish sometimes for some people, especially when you have genetics up against you as well, but now some evidence has come to light that was done by a University of research in Maryland USA. That suggests that exercise can now change this somewhat, they did a study of Amish people, both men and women a total of 704 participated in the study, it was found that some people had the particular gene which was associated with being overweight and or obese which is called FTO, Europeans about half of them tend to have a variation of this gene. The participants who had to different variants of this particular gene were far more likely to be overweight and tended to be seven pounds more heavier than those people who didn t have it those who had to variants of it were 67 percent more likely to become overweight or obese than those who didn t have it. But the researchers found that there was another group although they shared the same characteristics, as the ones to have the two variants of the gene, for some reason wasn t fat unlike their counterparts, so what was it that was different between the two different groups in a nutshell it was exercise that separated them. There is a twist to the story though, those who did manage to defeat their genes managed to burn a staggering 900 calories more than those who did moderate exercise for two to three hours a day. That s an awful lot when you think about it comparing the two. In another trial which was done by Danish people they found that those whom had the FTO to variants gene, had to do far less exercise than their counterparts in order to lose weight, so what can we actually take away from this research, it means that even if you do have problems and they are genetically related some simple exercise will put you on the right track all this tends to do is reinforce what is being said. So when the excuse comes it s to do with my DNA I am afraid it is no longer valid any more in order to lose weight effectively than you do need to do plenty of exercise otherwise you won t accomplish what you want to do ultimately. And this just reinforces it yet again. Although it just goes to show that even genes can be altered by simple changes to our lifestyles.

Tags: obese

Eat Throughout The Day and Keep Weight Off from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 12, 2008 12 views / likes
Having frequent meals throughout the day instead of the traditional three times a day model, which we are all so used to perhaps now might not necessarily be the best way to keep your weight in check. You are far better off by eating five to six small meals throughout the day, the reason for this is eating food is a chemical process most people when it comes to weight loss tend to get things backwards, they either over consume food or starve themselves the problem with doing these particular things is overconsumption creates more weight gain. And under consumption will cause your body to hold onto fat stores, but that only that your metabolism will slow right down, as regards to the amount of calories that you should be eating in a small meal 400 calories is perfectly adequate spread over about four to five meals that works out at roughly 2000 calories. You could always have one or more meals added to this say hundred calories each the thing here is to use common sense and workout what you could incorporate into these particular meals calorie wise to suit your own needs. If you are particularly looking to lose weight than adjust these so that you re consuming about 1600 calories instead another beneficial reason for doing this is it will keep your blood sugar at a stable level throughout the day, we do seem to have lots of traditional ways of doing things in our life. And it all does seem to revolve around the way we eat our meals as we are growing all as children we are constantly told by our parents not to eat between meals etc, so as we grow what we tend not to do it when we get older, but the thing is there is nothing wrong with it these days we are overloaded with information from print media, the Internet television etc all telling us what we should and shouldn t be doing. As regards eating food the thing is going back to years gone by things like breakfast, lunch and tea were never even heard of in Victorian times the only reason we have these particular ritual eating times is late tend to work within our working lives. But really why not break tradition and eat when you want to you will tend to reap the rewards far better, if you think about this logically it does make a lot of sense have you ever noticed when, you don t eat for several hours when it comes to say dinner time. You are starving due to the time that has elapsed between breakfast and dinner time, and do to your traditional way of eating you don t tend to snack until dinner time, but also you may notice that it is quite easily possible to eat more food eating this way. Have a go and try it and see what happens I think you might be quite pleasantly surprised. Remember these points eating food is a chemical process if you are eating food the right sort of food then your body is generating heat. If you want to get a rough idea of what to eat eating five to six meals a day have a look here. http://www.sixmealsadaydiet.co.uk

Can The Environment Make You Fat from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 10, 2008 6 views / likes
Or are there any actual links to being obese or overweight that are connected with our environment? it would seem that a new study that was done in Spain has thrown up some very interesting issues as far as children and the actual environment they are brought up in. It argues that the actual pollutional environment that the child is actually brought up in as regards to chemicals, which it gets contaminated with whilst in the womb. Quite a lot of adults and children in the United Kingdom are now obese. And the world over there are 300 million obese people worldwide, and the explanation that we get over and over again is that it s merely down to the amount of calories that we are consuming, and also a lack of exercise. People the world over are now beginning to question whether, or not it is actually the case of the latter which is actually causing the problem as a whole, for a long time now it has been known that some people genetically do have slower metabolisms than others do. The new study which was done in Barcelona is now suggesting that, there may be other causes to the worldwide epidemic of obesity which shows no sign of decline, during the study some levels of a particular pesticide were measured namely hexachlorobenzene, 403 children were actually tested for the levels of this particular pesticide. The actual ones that had large levels of the particular toxin were far more likely to become obese later on in life, this particular pesticide has now been banned from use, but still can get into the environment and thus find it s way into food. The overall idea of the study was to not blame one particular pesticide, per se but just to prove that there was an actual course in effect namely that this particular pesticide did in fact cause problems. You have to face up to facts here having crops sprayed with pesticides, means that you are putting foreign substances into your body. None of us really actually know the amount of concentration that is used when spraying crops, the mere fact stands that we are putting something into our body that it doesn t need. Other experiments which have been conducted on animals, that have been fed with particular pollutants, have also been found to produce offspring that become obese later on, when they have started to grow. In the evidence that was found in the Spanish study, HCB as it is known as, they couldn t actually find a particular reason as to why the mother s offspring started to become obese, they put it down to the fact that the pesticide could have made the mother become diabetic. And this was the overall cause of the problem, a well-known expert in these areas, namely Dr Myers who is a well-known scientist at, the Environmental Health Service s in the USA, says that although these findings are very interesting and there does seem to be some sort of link. From what has been found by all of the studies he say s that there could be other explanations for these particular problems which have been occurring with mothers and their offspring, one of the toxins produces obesogens which tend to build up in pregnant mothers and can alter cell structure and turn things on and off, such as stem cells. If stem cells are turned off this in turn will turn stem cells into fat cells. So why are we actually still getting fatter The same things keep coming round and round again we tend to eat more calories than we need, hence we gain weight, eating up a poor diet high in sugar and saturated fat. However now scientists are beginning to overturn this particular notion and argue ar that there may be other factors that are causing our ever-increasing obesity epidemic, the Independent on Sunday last week stated that, as people there has been no actual downturn in the amount of physical activity that we did from now, and from the year 1980. But obesity has still tended to skyrocket out of control and shows no signs of stopping either, genetic factors also are being thrown out the window as well, and other things are now being looked into as to what is causing our ever overweight growing population. Could it be due to some of the other factors it s been stated that either on the way to overweight babies, can still become obese later on in life, and mothers who have their babies later on in life are more likely to have obese babies. Having a lack of sleep you are far more likely to gain weight this applies in adults and both children,we burn more calories. When we are colder we burn more calories, than if we are warmer, due to the fact of how efficient modern heating systems are whether, it be gas electric or modern central heating, we are far less likely to want to go outside and go for a walk or do some kind of exercise, when we can stay inside and keep warm. Lots of prescription drugs these days can cause weight gain. For all we know there could be many other contributing factors as to why we have they ever increasing population of overweight obese adults, I dare say that we now even just beginning to scratch the surface of what is causing this rise in obesity rates the world over. Because wa are spoonfed the same information over and over again we tend to think that that must be the overall cause and that is it, nothing else could be causing is to become overweight apart from what we are eating, some people no matter what they do, can t lose weight. They have to resort to having things like stomach tucks or having a gastric bypass operation, so what we have here is some alternative reasons as to why they may be other factors involving becoming obese rather than the normal ones we hear over and over again. It would be interesting to get some feedback about this particular issue in hand and see what other people think please let me know if you think that there are other factors, which are keeping people overweight. Or are we simply becoming genetic mutants by the foods that we are eating, and the enviroment with which we are bought up in. Source http://www.independent.co.uk

Why you Need a 35 inch Waistline from Weight Loss Blog (Lose That Tyre) - Podcasts powered by Odiogo on September 08, 2008 3 views / likes
There has been a magic number that has recently been going round in the health circles, as to why you need to have a 35 inch waist, having a large abdomen is not a beneficial thing to have as far as your health is concerned. According to some research that was done in Tufts University Boston, they say that in order to be safe with your health you need to have a waist size that is 35 inches for women and 37 for men. This is the number that is critical to knowing whether or not you may have health problems later on in your life, the general problem with having a fat belly is you get a buildup of something called visceral fat, the problem with this sort of fat is it tends to bind itself to, your liver and heart organs which is not good news. The result of this being that it creates more the bad fat which is known as LDL cholesterol, another knock-on side-effect of this is it tends to interfere with the production of insulin, which if if you don t do something about it then you for more likely to contract diabetes. Other research that has come to light has also suggested that there may be connections with having a large abdomen and Alzheimer s disease, the upside of this is researchers have found that once you start to exercise quite frequently. And start to lose weight the fat deposits around your body can start to diminish by a rough figure of 32 percent, this sort of fat which also can be known as adipose fat, tends to be brown in colour and is something really that you need to get rid of in order to become healthier. In order to help yourself more from adding to this particular problem make sure that you eat unrefined carbohydrates, and eat foods that have a low glycaemic rating these foods tend to be broken down rather more slowly than their counterparts. Examples of low glycaemic foods are wholemeal bread I would suggest using bread that is very high in fibre go for whole weeks, the problem with white bread is that it can be full of sugar because it is made with a different type of flour. Things like broccoli, peppers, peas, all good examples of low glycaemic foods the more you can eat of these the better, in research that was done at Tufts University they did some tests on participants. And put them on a fibre rich carbohydrate diet which is a lot better than a really high carbohydrate diet, they ate things like wholegrain breakfast cereals, brown rice, wholemeal pitta bread and ate plenty of fruit and vegetables. Those who ate the low glycaemic high carbohydrate foods but were high in fibre, had a letter stomach than their counterparts whom were eating the high glycaemic carbohydrate foods. It was found that the women who ate the lower glycaemic foods also reduced their overall body mass index. What does drinking beer do well surprisingly enough a study of Czechoslovakian men, who drank lots of beer were found to have no increase in there abdomen size despite the fact that they were drinking a lot of beer. So it seems that there is something to eating low glycaemic foods interestingly enough I must say that, from my own actual experiences I did try myself switching to a low glycaemic diet and it didn t work for me so there must be something in it. This has now given me validation that it does actually work the only other things to draw from this are, make sure that you keep your dairy products in check and use low-fat substitutes where you can, just recently I have started myself trying cottage cheese. I have never tried it before but I must say I quite enjoy it at one time it was something that would never even consider eating but I suppose overtime what tends to happen with your dietary habits is that you tend to stick to what you know instead of eating other foods. An example of this is from my own experience is I never used to eat, sweet potatoes even though I have not been eating them just recently when I was I really enjoyed eating them. There are so many food choices around these days but the general overall problem is that we get so used to going to supermarkets and buying prepacked frozen foods that it becomes habitable shopping, how often do you actually tend to think about what foods you are actually buying. Do you actually plan what you re going to buy or do you just remember from memory, see the general overall way of doing this kind of shopping I tend to think is you re more less shopping on autopilot. And it could be quite easily tempting to buy things that you don t need, offers like buy one get one free very tempting. Sometimes we don t tend to realise that the primitive part of our brains which is all to do with survival works in reverse logic sometimes and makes us do things which we should necessarily be doing. http://women.timesonline.co.uk/
