Mutant Quartz

QuickTime More of those pesky tubes, this time aranged differently and with 3D models passing through. Anyways thats the last of todays silent videos. Im still working on some stuff that reacts to musical MIDI data, it may be optimistic to say that Monday will bring a musical video but it could happen I suppose.

QuickTime I have begun to experiment with opacity of 3D objects, and slowly start to use some very simple textures here and there.

QuickTime Made by accident, it sort of reminded me of some typical 90 s club flyer artwork. Again I will probably find a use for it as part of a larger 3D scene one day.

QuickTime Something not altogether interesting, but that I ll probably end up using as part of a larger composition sometime.

QuickTime The second of todays videos. A few elements used in this Quartz Composition were from the work of others, I shall try to get their names so I can give attribution here.

QuickTime The first of 6 videos that are silent, featuring things Ive been tinkering with in Quartz Composer in the last week or so.

QuickTime Well I just spent about 5 hours messing around with making stuff react to midi notes, but Ive totally botched the demo of this, the music didnt record at a listenable volume and the day ends in 5 minutes. So I guess there will be 8 days to my videoblogging week as I will attempt to post a more useful demo on Sunday.

QuickTime vPIP Well I spent all evening trying to get an example of the Jazzmutant multi-touch stuff being used to controlling visuals, but I had a load of technical problems. So I had to fall back on a keyboard thingy I was working on months ago, which isnt really a good example of what the Jazzmutant can do but I used it anyway. Apologies for the poor quality of this clip, I need to go and eat food but there s less than an hour left of Friday here in the UK, so I rushed it big time.

QuickTime Tonight a rushed experiment which started off as some splines in Quartz Composer, using the excellent GLTools plugin from Kineme . Then I loaded the Quartz Composition into VDMX and used a Kaleidoscope effect and a colour effect. Then I made a noise using Reaktor. I guess it took about an hour in total, and isnt the sort of thing Id normally do or post. It may end up getting used as the texture for some part of a 3D model one day, or I may look at it again and decide its not much cop. Oh how I wish Id been able to take this week off work, Ive surrounded myself with powerful tools that I havent even got time to get beyond the surface of yet. The multi-touch aspect of what I hope to achieve has not even begun, maybe I can post something about that tomorrow.

QuickTime For more than half an hour this evening, this thing was a dodgy pyramid but then it turned into something that made strange patterns, so I thought I may as well post it. But various stages of my capture & compression did not treat it too kindly, it hasnt turned out too well compared to how it looks in realtime in quartz composer. Oh well, thats another thing for the todo list, more codec unjoys and lost hours to come! And for the 2nd day in a row Im too lazy to even record my own voice, tsk tsk. 

QuickTime Again I havent finished this yet so its only half-baked, but here is a strange face done in Quartz Composer. The lips will be in sync with the voice one day, honest

QuickTime Well its videoblogging week 2008, so I will be attempting to post 7 video s in 7 days. This first one just shows the latest member of the 3D band, plus the guitarist you ve seen before, but rendered with a yellow neon effect. Later in the week there will be a few random things Ive been trying in Quartz Composer, and hopefully a few video s that show how its done. Im not good enough to post proper tutorials yet, but Ive got to start somewhere I suppose.

QuickTime A brief introduction to what Im hoping to achieve using Quartz Composer. The significance of MIDI which I failed to mention in the video, is that the 3d band will be playing along in time to the music, automatically. Human operator will then be free to live control the cameras, special effects and other elements of animation. There is a long road ahead, as you can see everything is rather primitive and incomplete at the moment.

QuickTime If it weren t for Semanal, none of this stuff would see the light of day until a time when its ready to be used to tell a story, opinion or fact.Its been a long mission, Im only at the beginning yet my head has been spinning on this stuff for at least 6 years. At this rate my first complete work should be ready by 2034 ;)
