Minimum Wage Goes Up Thursday from YouTube :: Videos by AssociatedPress on July 24, 2008 3 views / likes
SelectPlusMinimum Wage Goes Up ThursdayMinimum Wage Goes Up ThursdayThe Associated PressAbout 2 million Americans get a raise Thursday as the federal minimum wage goes up, but that is countered by higher gas and food prices those workers are already paying. (July 24)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Get ready for a pay raise if you make minimum wage...and it's a pretty sizeable one, too.On Thursday, the federal minimum wage goes up 70 cents. That affects about 2 million Americans. That's great news for low income earners who are already paying more for gas and food. But one economist calls it a drop in the bucket compared to higher costs. The good news? 23 states and the District of Columbia already pay more than that. AND it goes up again next year to $7.25.Besides, most businesses, even restaurants and other service sector companies pay more than minimum wage anyway. The bad news? Some small businesses are already saying they'll have to raise prices to cover the higher cost to pay employees. ___ ___, The Associated Press Author: AssociatedPress Keywords: minimum wage up thursday Added: July 24, 2008

SportsSource:Hardy Tests Positive for Banned SubstanceSource:Hardy Tests Positive for Banned SubstanceThe Associated PressAmerican swimmer Jessica Hardy's trip to the Olympics could be in jeopardy. A person familiar with test reults says Hardy has tested positive for a banned substance. (July 24)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] It was less than a month ago that American swimmer Jessica Hardy won the 100 meter breaststroke at the Olympic trials. She also qualified for the U-S team in the 50 meter freestyle, the four by 100 freestyle relay and the four by 100 medley relay. But her planned trip to Beijing could now be in jeopardy. A person familiar with drug test results tells the Associated Press that Hardy has tested positive for a banned substance, described as a stimulant. Hardy can now appeal to both the American Arbitration Association and the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Typically, a first-time doping offense results in a two-year ban. Hardy's agent says she told him that she never did anything wrong and that she never cheated. Hardy currently holds the American record in the 100 meter breaststroke. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR VOICE:-------------------------VIDEO PRODUCER: Kevin White------------------------------VIDEO SOURCE: AP Images--------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL:------------------------------VIDEO RESTRICTIONS:----------------------------------SCRIPT/WIRE SOURCE:BC-OLY--SWM-Hardy-Drug Positive, 5th Ld-Write2090------------------------------------ Author: AssociatedPress Keywords: hardy drug_tests source:hardy tests positive banned substance Added: July 24, 2008

Small Pickups Panned for Safety from YouTube :: Videos by AssociatedPress on July 24, 2008 3 views / likes
PlusSmall Pickups Panned for SafetySmall Pickups Panned for SafetyThe Associated PressFor the first time, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has conducted side-tests for small pickups. The results were good for Toyota Tacoma, but 'dismal' for several other models. (July 23)WITH GAS PRICES RISING -- SMALL PICKUP TRUCKS ARE LOOKING LIKE A MORE ATTRACTIVE TRANSPORTATION OPTION.BUT ACCORDING TO THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY -- YOU'RE NOT LIKELY TO FIND MANY CHOICES WITH STATE OF THE ART CRASH PROTECTION. [Notes:SOT -- ADRIAN LUND/ PRES. INSURANCE INST. FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY] pickups may have a rough and tough image....but most of the small ones we tested aren't providing state of the art protection. [Notes:SOT -- ADRIAN LUND/INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY]THE INSTITUTE TESTED FIVE DIFFERENT MODELS -- THE TOYOTA TACOMA -- DODGE DAKOTA -- FORD RANGER -- NISSAN FRONTIER -- AND CHEVROLET COLORADO -- AND FOUND THE TOYOTA TACOMA TO BE THE BEST OF THE BUNCH. [Notes:SOT --ADRIAN LUND/PRES. INSURANCE INSTITUTE] 'the toyota tacoma was the exception in this group of vehicles...not only did it earn a good rating in frontal crash protection but it also got a good rating in our side impact tests...which simulates what happens if another suv or pickup runs into your side.THE 2008 TACOMA FEATURES OPTIONAL AIRBAGS.THEY'LL BE STANDARD ON 2009 MODELS WHICH WILL SOON GO ON SALE. [Notes:VO --PICKUP TRUCKS]THREE OTHER SMALL PICKUPS-- THE DODGE DAKOTA -- FORD RANGER -- AND NISSAN FRONTIER ALL RATED MARGINAL IN SIDE CRASH TESTS.THE CHEVROLET COLORADO FARED THE WORST -- WITH A POOR RATING. [Notes:SOT--ADRIAN LUND] To begin with...there was a lot of intrusion...well into the drivers survival space....the injury measures we recorded on the driver dummy showed a risk of internal organ injuries and multiple rib fractures. [Notes:VO--SIDE IMPACT VIDEO]THE INSTITUTE SAYS SIDE TESTS ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE SIDE IMPACTS ARE THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF FATAL CRASH -- KILLING ABOUT 9 THOUSAND OCCUPANTS A YEAR. [Notes:VO--SHOTS OF TEST DRIVING AND VEHICLE STABILITY] IT'S ALSO ADVISING MOTORISTS TO BUY A PICK-UP WITH ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL. TAKE A LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE TWO VEHICLES. THE ONE ON THE BOTTOM HAS ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL -- THE ONE ON TOP DOESN'T. [Notes:SOT -- ADRIAN LUND]E-S-C is a lifesaving feature...and you shouldn't buy a new vehicle without it. [Notes:VO--SHOTS OF VEHICLES] THE ONLY SMALL PICK-UPS THAT OFFER ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL IN THIS GROUP ARE THE TACOMA AND THE FRONTIER.AND TOYOTA IS MAKING IT STANDARD STARTING IN 2009. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
