This is a sneak peek at the soundtrack that will be used in a performance at Terra Extremitas, put on by the Foolish People. The script and soundtrack are based on some of the eschatological themes in Fallen Nation, and will serve as a bridge between that and a future project with the Foolish People, and many other creatives you may or may not have heard of The voices you will hear in this soundtrack will be the voices inside the actor s head. The rest you will just have to imagine- or better yet, get your ass to the event. Also, after the Terra Extremitas event in Amsterdam, we will be providing you with a version of this soundtrack with the actors lines added- which may or may not have video, depending on how the filming at the event goes. (posted on StinkFight.com Monday, June 9th, 2008) Is the president being impeached? (I hope so.) I have been watching a lot of C-SPAN lately. It’s basically the only thing worth watching, now that all TV pretty much sucks. Not a lot of people watch C-SPAN. So I’m one of the small percentage of Americans who know, at this moment, that Representative Dennis Kucinich is on the Congressional floor presenting his resolution calling for Bush’s impeachment. It’s a list of 35 charges, (list here) mostly Constitutional violations and Geneva Convention violations, and he’s been reading it for about an hour, and he’s about halfway through it. A member of the House of Representatives presenting a resolution detailing charges is one of the first steps in impeachment proceedings. The charges range from election fraud, including disenfranchisement, to illegal wiretapping to illegal torture, to lying about our reasons for going to war, to handing out padded military contracts to his buddies. And a lot more. I can barely keep up. And I’m as giddy as a kid in a candy store about this. So is Debra Jean. She’s glued to the screen. We both love the Constitution. A lot. It’s history in the making, and it’s not even on CNN.com or Yahoo News yet. I think it’s an emergency meeting, because it’s 10:30 PM in DC right now. I remember seeing Nixon on TV when I was a kid, but he was never actually impeached. (He quit before that could happen, and Ford pardoned Nixon as soon as he took office.) And Nixon was basically just going to be charged with, as I recall, one thing (conspiring to pay people to bug a hotel room). The charges being read against Bush are many, and many are far more serious. Kucinich is quoting the US Constitution a lot. I wish Kucinich had made it to run for president. He’s smart, and has other things going for him. I have a prediction: tonight on the Colbert show, Colbert will report this out of character, as he really is, not as his “alter ego” who would be outraged by this. He’ll just state it, and let people cheer. Here’s a quick 20-minute podcast I recorded, and uploaded while the proceedings were still being read live. It’s about 17 minutes of the charges being read, and about three minutes of us commenting on it. We’re pretty much in shock. And pretty happy. Follow up: three days later and NOTHING on TV about it, not even on Colbert or Daily Show. Is the government compiling a secret list of citizens to detain under martial law?In the spring of 2007, a retired senior official in the U.S. Justice Department sat before Congress and told a story so odd and ominous, it could have sprung from the pages of a pulp political thriller. It was about a principled bureaucrat struggling to protect his country from a highly classified program with sinister implications. Rife with high drama, it included a car chase through the streets of Washington, D.C., and a tense meeting at the White House, where the president s henchmen made the bureaucrat so nervous that he demanded a neutral witness be present. The bureaucrat was James Comey, John Ashcroft s second-in-command at the Department of Justice during Bush s first term. Comey had been a loyal political foot soldier of the Republican Party for many years. Yet in his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, he described how he had grown increasingly uneasy reviewing the Bush administration s various domestic surveillance and spying programs. Much of his testimony centered on an operation so clandestine he wasn t allowed to name it or even describe what it did. He did say, however, that he and Ashcroft had discussed the program in March 2004, trying to decide whether it was legal under federal statutes. Shortly before the certification deadline, Ashcroft fell ill with pancreatitis, making Comey acting attorney general, and Comey opted not to certify the program. When he communicated his decision to the White House, Bush s men told him, in so many words, to take his concerns and stuff them in an undisclosed location. The Continuity of Governance program encompasses national emergency plans that would trigger the takeover of the country by extra-constitutional forces. Made this here console outta wood panelin’ from my kitchen.” He swept one massive, greasy hand towards a remarkably well-crafted, oak paneled center console, with two cup holders, an ashtray, and independent cigarette lighter. The console was covered in diagrams and etchings, seemingly drawn in everything from pen, pencil and marker to tiny wood awls. Within these diagrams were fuel and distance calculations, phone numbers, IP addresses, web sites, and brief philosophical statements in a seemingly endless, hypnotic sprawl. “Sitting wedged into the oversized radio hole, is a first generation in-dash, state-of-the-art DVD player.” The device he pointed towards was mounted with a deck of cards and a matchbook. “The DVD player is nice, even still have the remote. I keep meanin’ to get a real mounting bracket for it, but…well, you know how it is. Besides, I don’t play cards. Only prollem with the player, well the reverse don’t work. And never forget, Jesus was put to death specifically for challenging organized religion. This BBC documentary explores the idea that Pope Benedict XVI, also known as Cardinal Ratzinger, may have played a leading role in a systematic cover-up of child sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests. In 2001, while he was a cardinal, he allegedly issued a secret Vatican edict to Catholic bishops worldwide. The document recommended that rather than reporting sexual abuse to the relevant legal authorities, bishops should encourage the victim, the witnesses and the perpetrator not to talk about the abuse. Was this done to help the victims and minimize future abuses or was it done in the self interest of those responsible for these grievous sins. Share This
