The elephants came out the woodlands to drink at dusk. And they just kept coming and coming. Filming on the ground I felt I was right their amongst them. This young hyaena just has to investigate the cameraman on the ground. As bold as he is, he's nervous. Instinct tells him to run away but he just can't resist further investigation. The hyaena mom arrived at the den at dawn and calls her little ones to suckle. But there's no reponse. The little ones are sound asleep and mom can't get into the den to wake them. She waits it out until the sun moves her off to find shade. It's only just before sunset that mom returns and calls again, but still little ones sleep on. A couple of elephant bulls arrived at Simbiri dam at sunset. The low angle I was able to shoot from made it so much more real. When the herds didn't follow in time I turned to the last glow of the day to film the Marabou storks silhouetted standing on one leg. A young elephant calf was having fun playing with Chipfongwe until Chipfongwe's sisters interrupted. Then the Aunt walked right up to my car to pluck a plant from under it. The calves carried on playing, then the little calf approached my vehicle. He came up and touched the car, and ended up frightening himself. 7 members of the Nduna pride were holed up at Manyuchi pan. Doing what lions do so well. A troop of baboons came wandering down to drink at the pan but were stopped in their tracks and then proceeded to shout abuses at the lions before conintuing on to drink and the lions pretending to ignore them. A baboon troop have come to drink at Banyini with their crazy up and down tails. Life is always a little tense as they're always maintaining a hierarchy in the ranks. An adult low ranking female is attacked by a sub adult male for no reason. She keeps her cool knowing that any retribution could land her in deep trouble. The lions are mating again. Sjambok mating with Magwaza while his brother pretends to sleep next to them apparently not interested. The mating goes in the later afternoon light. Yellow-billed hornbills are mainly insect feeders. But this guy's caught himself a field mouse. Not being equipped with a bill to rip it apart he shakes it trying to split it limb from limb. Already he's managed to remove the head. Mom arrived at dusk and not having been out the den all day the pups were keen. They were also hungry. But they still didn't know their way around the new den with all its cracks and crevices. With mom calling frantically the pups were dashing around trying to get to her. Eventually they found a way. The pups have just been fed by mom and are quickly back at the den. They hang around the den entrance not sure what to make of the cameraman perched on his rock. In the meantime they hassle a pup that seems rather popular. He's also the most adventurous pup and feels nothing to head off into the hills. The others soon follow. Mum brought back the ears of a young impala. The pups ended up playing and playing and playing with these ears. The eternal indestructible toy. Thankfully they weren't still attached to the impala. Pent up in the den all day the pups are keen to get out at dusk and get rid of their energy fighting/playing with each other. Nobody is allowed to dominate. Anyone showing any signs of dominance is soon sorted out by the others, so maintaining a balance of equality. Mom has brought back a piece of skin from her kill, which is now the big play thing for the pups. It constantly changes hands as they all fight over it. But eventually the skin is left in peace as they lose interest in it. The pups didn't really care for the hyaena calling in the valley and continued to play. Then mom arrived but she had nothing to offer. She was snappy towards them. She came back to the den several times and the pups kept their distance not being sure how to handle her. A Natal Francolin around the wild dog den is no cause for concern. But the Slender Mongoose is potentially deadly. I could be a carrier of the deadly Rabies virus, which could in turn wipe out the whole pack. It's scuttling around the den while the pups are sleeping, picking up titbits left over from food regurgitated by the adults.
