life recording, the venice breakwater on april 20, 2008 from svanes on Vimeo. at first glance, little appears to be happening during this typical day at the beach. however, look carefully at the waves as the sets increase in size. check out the many surfers (and some of the spectacular wipe-outs) in this five minute video, as well as the wide variety of wanderers and strollers (and their occasionally bizarre choice of wardrobe). there's an outrigger canoe regatta in the background, and, of course, the soothing sounds of the surf as it reaches the shore. archives: an evening at café lo cubano from svanes on Vimeo. my friend jeff and the band he plays in are performing this friday at the café lo cubano on laurel heights. here's a few shots from the last time that i saw them perform, in front of an audience that included adriana, lisette, stacy, serena and rob and their son, taj. the sound quality from this recording is pretty awful and i have to say that the lighting at the venue does not flatter the band, but so it goes. one gets an idea of what the band is like, but not much more. : ) the band is called "rennea y sus amigos" and jeff plays the congos. excellent technique, maestro! love me forever, test sequence for show reel from svanes on Vimeo. try viewing this in FULL SCREEN format. commentary: as an experiment, i've edited a sequence taken from the dailies that i have from the feature film that i production designed last year, a film called LOVE ME FOREVER. this is my edit, not the official edit (i have yet to see the finished film or even a rough cut, for that matter). ironically, there's very little production design in this sequence; i mean, it's there but this is all the footage that i have from the film. hopefully, that will change soon. i think i was able to procure about 4 or 5 dvds of dailies before i returned to los angeles. this is the first cut. there is so much that is not seen in this sequence. alas, i don't yet have much footage that features the more heavily production designed sets. since this sequence is edited from dailies, you will notice that the image resolution is very low and you will see the time code at the top and bottom. the original format is 16:9, which i'm not sure if that will translate well to vimeo's format. sebastian winterø did the cinematography - though, given the manner in which i may have butchered this sequence, he may not thank me for crediting him. ; ) more credits will be listed at a later time. music is from angela mccluskey (her cover of 'love is stronger than death') and radiohead ('all i need' from 'in rainbows'). test - a look at some of the production design in CECILIE (SHORT VERSION) from svanes on Vimeo. a test version of the BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE PRODUCTION DESIGN IN CECILIE. this is the shorter version of the two. i production designed the feature film CECILIE (found here: http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/450569/Cecilie/details and here: http://www.dfi.dk/english/Danish%2Bfilms/FeatureFilmsByYear/filmFact.htm?FilmID=17400), a critically acclaimed psychological thriller made in denmark, released in 2007. this is a behind the scenes look at the making of that film, with a focus on the documentary footage that concerns itself with the production design. this film is around 12 minutes in length. it is in danish with english subtitles (which i've added), and features, among others: hans fabian wullenweber, rasmus heisterberg, sonja richter, thomas dyg, and christian svanes kolding (me!). i've edited this particular piece to use for my showreel, and jonas bagger was responsible for directing the documentary footage, though some of the footage was provided by me while working on this film. there are also excerpts of footage taken from the feature film itself. more info found here: http://www.christiansvaneskolding.com Cast: svanes

excerpts from cecilie for the production designer showreel (extended version) from svanes on Vimeo. this is one of the final tests for the extended version of the cecilie showreel for my production designer's showreel. total running time is 7.5 minutes. i production designed this film, cecilie (released in denmark in 2007), so this particular video highlights more of the production design and less of the film's narrative elements. therefore, things might be a bit confusing or appear not to build a narrative, but so be it. everything that is in this particular film is the work of the production design, from the set design and set constructions, the decoration, the onset lighting (practicals) the costumes, to the snow and ice. each environment has either been built and decorated from scratch, or completely worked over from what it once was. nothing appears in this footage by chance. most of the music is taken from the film's score, but there is some additional ambient music taken from cliff martinez's work on the film solaris, and the song "the national anthem" from radiohead is also used. text has also been added, to help explain a bit about the film's narrative. these may prove to be unnecessary. a much shorter version of this particular show reel will be made - that version needs to be 3 minutes. three and a half minutes with kemo sabe and the sorrow town choir at thee parkside in san francisco from svanes on Vimeo. had an opportunity to see two local bands while in san francisco over the weekend: the punk sockabilly bluegrass outfit known as kemo sabe; and the more conventional rock quartet going by the name of the sorrow town choir. a full review will be posted, but in the meantime, here's a brief video survey of the performances. san francisco, siouxsie sioux at the fillmore theater from svanes on Vimeo. from the february 12th, 2008 concert at the fillmore theater on fillmore street. rasputina opened the show, and quite frankly, put on the better performance. however, siouxsie shined on some of her older numbers (though i think she had to slow the tempo down a bit - i guess one should cut her some slack - she's over 50 now)... the footage above contains the concert's opening number THEY FOLLOW YOU and a brief excerpt of DEAR PRUDENCE. the opening number takes some time to kick in. from my perspective, while the roar of excitement from the crowd certainly was worth the experience, the song itself underwhelms. still, it was nice to see her perform. for adriana, this was the third time she's caught siouxsie, though the first time without budgie - i think she too was a bit let down.
