THE GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL 2007 from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 23, 2007 990 views / likes
Betweenplanets was lucky enough to send Ryan, our roving reporter, to cover this years Great Escape Festival, here is what he found out for you . THURSDAY 17TH MAY AT THE AUDIO FEAR OF FLYING Fear Of Flying are a three piece from London. They are made up of three young upstarts. They were playing downstairs at Brighton's Audio. I was a bit sceptical about these young lads, although as soon as they entered the stage they proper got into it. They were just banging through their top classy tunes that were amazingly catchy. I was surprised that they were unsigned - they should be! They completely nailed their set - Got the crowd jumping to proper alternative new wave pop. These lads were well worth seeing they deserve their chance. THE KISSAWAY TRAIL Well this Danish band are a 5 piece and a 5 piece too many. Trying to imitate Arcade Fire but going severely wrong somewhere! It was always going to be hard to follow such an amazing set after Fear Of Flying but this was truly shocking. The crowd were split 50/50 but the severe heckling from some of the audience must have had an affect on their performance. Altogether it was a poor set and largely disappointing. THE 1990'S A fantastic three piece from Glasgow. I had heard a lot of good stuff about this band and I'm pleased I stayed to watch them - they were awesome! For me the best tune they played was the brand new single "see you at the lights". They had the crowd singing back their tunes and any new band that can make that happen deserves total respect. Well worth seeing and I would encourage anyone to go get their album "Cookies" released on Rough Trade. THURSDAY 17TH MAY AT THE PAVILLION THEATRE THE ARCHIE BRONSON OUTFIT So bad you barely noticed they were playing. Didn't seem to get much appreciation from the crowd. They had no stage presence or crowd interaction. The only thing that stood out from this band was a beast of a hairy beard on the singer. THURSDAY 17TH MAY AT KOMEDIA UPSTAIRS (1 AM GIG) GALLOWS I had been hearing good things about Gallows and after seeing the massive queue outside I knew they would live up to my expectations. Not the best of starts for the band as Frank Carter's brother Steph split his head open after getting smashed round the head with his guitar during the first song. Steph disappeared to get his head sorted and for the next five minutes the band barracked with the crowd – highly amusing! Once Steph returned the band completely kicked arse - this gig was going to be intense. The highlight was the single "abandon ship". To me this was an immense brutal gig. Gallows went down a storm. FRIDAY THE 18TH MAY ON THE PIER (SECRET GIG) FOALS This was a secret gig in a pub on the pier. I had heard one song by Foals and loved it. The sound was a bit on the dodgy side but considering the venue I think you can let that issue go. They certainly got a crowd through the door. The likes of Preston from the Ordinary Boys and the Maccabees were hanging out watching the band. Poor ‘ole Preston thought he was going to get a fair bit of attention instead of Foals ……but no one cared about his presence, people were fixated on this banging live set from Foals. FRIDAY 18TH MAY AT THE CORN EXCHANGE THE HEIGHTS From Wales via London. If you like you classic 1990s Indie bands, such as Embrace, then these are pretty good. However, boring to watch and slightly tame for me. They just didn't really stand out enough. The crowd seemed to like them ….just not for me. ART BRUT THE best gig I have ever been to!! It was Bang Bang Rock Roll'. Young Eddy Argos came on stage in a very retro 70's shirt, trousers and socks. A band that begin every song by saying, "Art Brut… GO" and just oozing confidence. They played loads of songs - old and new. He jumped into the crowd who all worshipped this icon. This was not just a gig….. this was a lesson in life! Absolute amazing !! Makes you want to form a band…… Art Brut did just that. SATURDAY 18TH MAY AT THE BEACH REVERAND AND THE MAKERS Really catchy little tunes. The beach crowd were loving ‘The Reverend'. He came across as slightly arrogant and I was unsure if this was part of the act! Respect though, he was meeting people after and giving them the time of day, unlike one other solo artist playing at this venue a bit later that evening! THE NOISETTES The LOUDEST band I have ever seen - I thought my eardrums were going to bleed. Starting out at the very front I quickly retreated to the back of the venue where I could then fully appreciate these awesome performers - sporting amazing haircuts and dishing out catchy heavy tunes. People go on about Beth from the Gossip's powerful voice….. but sorry, Shingai Shoniwa voice is a truly powerful voice with soul AND body. An ace gig. JACK PENATE This Young shy bloke from London left me disappointed. His sound is possibly more radio friendly but as a live performer he appeared lifeless! His repertoire for me was far too weak and all sounded the same. Hit or miss…..miss! Asboi Seksu's album and singles… from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 17, 2007 747 views / likes
On 21 May 2007, New York's best kept secret and One Little Indian's newest signings, Asobi Seksu (Japanese for playful sex), are to release their debut UK single. Called Walk On The Moon', the download only single is taken from Asobi Seksu's forthcoming self titled debut album, which is released a week later, on 28 May. Backed with new track Sooner', promo copies of the single will also include the video for the title track, which is a featured video on MTVU and a No.1 Dean's List' video (voted for by MTVU.com) in The States. Formed in 2002, the band is Japanese singer/keyboardist Yuki, guitarist/singer James Hanna, bassist Glenn Waldman, and drummer Keith Hopkin. Asobi Seksu eschew flavour-of-the-month posturing in favour of a sound that is intense, emotive, complex, and thoroughly beautiful. Yuki's vivid stories of loss and heartbreak - sung in English and Japanese - soar above ebbing squalls of deeply textured guitar noise, swirling beauty and pulsating energy that would make Kevin Shields blush. A mainstay of premiere East Coast venues – including sold-out shows in New York - Asobi Seksu are a formidable live act. Perfectly executing both the rhythmic precision and saturated ethereal melodies of their first studio effort, the band delivers a brilliant live performance. Never wasting a second, they blend pop sensibilities and poignant moments of melancholia with unexpected sonic explosions. . Mainstream press has taken notice, with favorable reviews from the New York Press, Amplifier, The Village Voice, and the New York Times, who praised their, "blaring, shimmering, multilayered guitars" and "well-made pop melodies." A second single will be released in July, when, hot on the heels of their debut album on 16 July, this Japanese / American combo will release their second studio album, Citrus' (the crossroads where My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth meet). A UK / international tour is currently being arranged for late Summer. http://www.asobiseksu.com http://www.myspace.com/asobiseksu Technorati Tags [ Album Release, American, Asobi Seksu, Music News, Single Release, Tour News ] Tag RSS feeds [ Album Release American Asobi Seksu Music News Single Release Tour News ] Album Release, American, Asobi Seksu, Music News, Single Release, Tour News Share This

Legendary 10cc Members Reunite To Record New Music from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 16, 2007 1,047 views / likes
15 May 2007,London - For the first time in over three decades original 10cc members, Kevin Godley and Graham Gouldman, have reunited to record new music. Best known for such classic 10cc hits as "Rubber Bullets", "I'm Not In Love" and "Things We Do For Love", as well as Godley and Creme's mega-hit "Cry", Godley and Gouldman have recorded five new songs available for download on their official website www.ggo6.co.uk. Kevin Godley, former half of the pioneering duo Godley and Creme, who has also directed and produced some of the most successful music videos in rock and roll for such artists as Duran Duran, U2, Peter Gabriel, Herbie Hancock, Rod Stewart, Keane and The Police to name just a few, graces all five tracks with his tremendous voice - arguably one of the great vocalists in music today. "I always figured Kevin had the best voice in the band," complements Gouldman, "ironic that he never sang lead on a 10cc single… Even I managed that. Now justice has been done. Kevin's voice and razor sharp lyrics take us places we haven't visited before… Always a good place to start!" Graham Gouldman, a prolific songwriter since 1965, who still maintains a touring 10cc, before joining the band penned such classic songs as "For Your Love", "Heart Full Of Soul" and "Evil Hearted You" for The Yardbirds, as well as "Look Through Any Window" and "Bus Stop" for The Hollies and "No Milk Today", "Listen People" and "East West" for Herman's Hermits. He has also worked with the likes of Andrew Gold and The Ramones. "It was exhilarating to hear a haunting Graham Gouldman chord sequence," says Godley about their recent collaboration, "wrap some words around it and feel something actually come to life, in real time, again. These first five tracks are pretty lean by our previous standards. They're more heartfelt, focused, less layered and lyrically they're tougher." Get The Very Best of 10cc' from Amazon.co.uk The five new Godley and Gouldman songs are as followed: 1) "The Same Road " - A burned-out, homesick, American executive, snarled up in traffic on the Westway, fantasizes about finding a soul mate in a pressurized, loveless world. 2) "Johnny Hurts" - In a dark hotel room, late at night, a man tries to comfort his best friend's new wife as a disastrous wedding party winds down in the bar. 3) "Beautifulloser.com" - A rich man recalls, with regret, his lost youth and his part in an extraordinary woman's downfall. 4) "Hooligan Crane " - Years after the event a victim of school bullying meets his vicious tormentor. Old wounds re-open. For the victim nothing's changed. For the bully everything has. 5) "Son Of Man" - Hotlegs morph, noisily, into 10cc via self -medicating, mutant primate and northern work ethic. (This is part one of "The Son Of Man Diaries", a sporadic, mostly audio but occasionally visual look at Godley and Gouldman's collective history). Why a reunion now after so many years? "In a nutshell… unfinished business," explains Godley. "In all the years we've known each other we've only written three pure, Godley/Gouldman songs. That, and a desire to find out if the music muscle still worked with someone I enjoyed and didn't have to spend weeks getting to know." Upon listening to the duo's new work unquestionably the spark is still there, picking up where they left off in 1976 but with a newly found, contemporary edge. Says Gouldman, "Kevin and I have always stayed in touch even though we haven't actually worked together for many years, so I was delighted when he called to suggest we write some songs. When I asked Why?' He said, No reason… just to do it and see what happens.' A good enough reason for me!" Much to the elation of Kevin Godley/Graham Gouldman fans worldwide, new material by the dynamic duo are currently in the works. Harrisons to release new single from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 03, 2007 369 views / likes
Harrisons - Dear Constable New single released 4th June 2007 on Melodic Heading up the hotly anticipated debut album No Fighting in the War, Dear Constable is the latest single from Sheffield scamps Harrisons. And like previous releases Wishing Well, Blue Note and Monday's Arms, it's another blue-collar belter; a vitriolic rant set to an infectious dance beat. "Dear Constable is basically an open letter of complaint to society," say the band. "It kind of sums up what we're all about - it's got a good solid groove and, unlike a lot of music today, it actually says something." On the B-side, another exciting proposition - a Harrisons cover of the Nick Cave classic Red Right Hand, famously one of the best songs ever written about masturbation. Here, Cave's droll baritone is swapped for singer Adam Jubby' Taylor's distinctive Yorkshire accent. "We'd been wanting to do a cover for ages and weren't sure which song to do," say the band. "We'd been listening to Nick Cave a lot at that point and thought we'd be able to do Red Right Hand with a Harrisons feel to it. Also, we were trying to write a song of our own with a darker side to it, and thought that if we learned that song, it would put us in the mood for it." The song that they wrote as a result, Crystal Sweet, is there on the album along with 11 other mini-anthems. With No Fighting In The War Room, Harrisons have delivered an album that's worthy of the weight of expectation heaped on them by fans and the press. The band - comprising Adam Taylor on vocals, guitarist Ben Stanton, drummer Mark White and bass guitarist Ashley Birch - formed two years ago in Hillsborough, Sheffield before the term New Yorkshire' had even been dreamed of. Naming themselves after Harrison Road, a local street whose sign they eventually procured and used as a stage prop, they soon made a splash on the emerging local scene. Things moved quickly after that, with the band gigging around the country, busking in St Tropez for three months, picking up high profile fans (Steve Lamacq , Phill Jupitus), storming South By Southwest ("we just got bollocksed for five days and ran amock") and recreating the football scene from Kes for the Blue Note video, roping in Phoenix Nights star Steve Edge as the PE teacher and winning the approval of Kes director Ken Loach in the process. With the album in the can, the boys are now looking forward to concentrating on doing what they do best - playing thrilling, life-affirming gigs. Catch them yourself at the following shows (supporting The Twang): 16 May Aberdeen Moshulu 17 May QMU Glasgow (SOLD OUT) 20 May Sheffield Leadmill (SOLD OUT) 21 May Manchester Academy 2 (SOLD OUT) 22 May Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall (SOLD OUT) 24 May Norwich Waterfront Technorati Tags [ Harrisons, Melodic Records, Music News, Single Release, The Twang, Tour News ] Tag RSS feeds [ Harrisons Melodic Records Music News Single Release The Twang Tour News ] Harrisons, Melodic Records, Music News, Single Release, The Twang, Tour News Share This

Some Velvet Morning new single news, tour news and video links from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 03, 2007 402 views / likes
Single Released: 4th June 2007 Some Velvet Morning release Settle Down' on June 4th through RhythmBank Entertainment. This is the follow up to debut single Losing My Mind which garnered XFM, Total Rock and Kerrang! playlists, and a buzz of interest from all who caught this great band live, not to mention Nancy Sinatra being moved to comment on the band who nicked their name from her classic duet with Lee Hazlewood. Some Velvet Morning are Des Lambert (Vocal, Guitar), Gavin Lambert (Bass) and Rob Flanagan (Drums). Settle Down' is a sultry brooding rock n roll gem, raw and edgy and a sublime example of their 70s rock reinvented for the indie 07s. Musicianship, mood and melody all combining for this perfect 3 minute pop nugget. Some Velvet Morning were formed after a chance meeting in London's tin-pan alley, Denmark Street, where they were testing out different guitars. After a smattering of shows across the nation's capital, in Beatles-esq style, they de-bunked to Europe to hone their skills, spending a sultry summer playing all-nighters on the French Riviera. Within months of their return to the UK Some Velvet Morning came to the attention of a certain Vicki Wickham of New York indie label RhythmBank Entertainment. Vicki, having produced seminal UK TV Show Ready, Steady Go which launched such legendary artists as The Rolling Stones , Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and The Who onto the UK public and latterly managed the likes of Dusty Springfield, Marc Almond and Morrissey.. could be said to know her music. She fell in love with Some Velvet Morning and signed them. Some Velvet Morning have completed recording their debut album produced by Rik Simpson (Kasabian / Coldplay) and Mike Pelanconi (Lilly Allen / Graham Coxon) and is due for release in the summer. With single Settle Down due out on June 4th, the album to follow and radio already picking up on this very special band, it looks like Some Velvet Morning are set to have a very good year. !!! (Chk Chk Chk) release ‘Must Be The Moon' from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 03, 2007 672 views / likes
!!! - "Must Be The Moon " on 12 and download on 14 May 2007 via Warp Records !!!'s new single, "Must Be The Moon," is all about sex - about trying to get the girl, about trying to get the boy, about whether either wants to be got and about everything that follows on from that; the good the bad and the failed. A universal anthem for every teenager in the country in pursuit of some action come Friday night; "Must Be The Moon" is your new favourite record! !!!'s new album, "Myth Takes," scrutinises the hoary old myths of rock n' roll excess, slams them up against the ancient myths which still fire our imagination and waits to see what comes out the other end. In the case of "Must Be The Moon" the story is told of one guy getting lucky in a club after a number of drinks, going home with the good-time girl of his wildest fantasies, only to awaken to find out that she's had to finish herself off while he was snoring. As lead singer Nic Offer puts it, "Moon myth intact, Casanova deflated." The lyrics for "Must Be The Moon" are delivered in sing song, nursery rhyme style by Offer in a way which both comments on and buys into the excesses of hip hop without sounding like he really means it ("It's all beginning to sound like a rap.") The backing, meanwhile, is the taut, wiry hardcore rock-disco for which !!! are rightly lauded. Remixes from Hot Chip and Emperor Machine respectively beef up and strip down the original for the dancefloors whilst uber-cool Brazilians CSS are rumoured to be going one further with a reply to Offer's man-take on the whole one night stand phenomenon .we'll keep you posted! You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video "Must Be The Moon," will be released on the next full moon, which also happens to be the ancient fertility festival off Beltane. Put away your dictionary of technical musicspeak, take your finger from your chin, change into a t-shirt and shorts that are slightly too small for you, get up on the sofa, pop the !!! single into place, press play and let it all go. Throw some moves, have fun, dare to enjoy yourself. You never know, you might even get lucky !!! will be playing the following festivals over the summer: Glastonbury, Reading / Leeds and Summer Sundae with more to be announced. !!! - Must Be The Moon video links WINDOWS MEDIA : Dirty Version / Clean Version QUICKTIME : .Mov Version Technorati Tags [ !!!, American, Carling Reading and Leeds Weekender, Glastonbury, Music News, Quicktime, Single Release, Summer Sundae Festival, Tour News, Video Stream, Warp, Windows Media ] Tag RSS feeds [ !!! Tom McRae ‘King Of Cards' album out on V2 on May 14th from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 03, 2007 900 views / likes
Tom McRae - an artist rightfully recognised for his intelligent song craft and remarkable vocals - returns with his eagerly awaited fourth studio LP ‘King of Cards' on V2 Records, May 14th.A download only EP 'Set The Story Straight' precedes the album on 16th April, and a single ‘Bright Lights' follows on 11th June. Written by Tom McRae and produced by Sean Genockey – whose previous credits include Manic Street Preachers, Kula Shaker, Suede -‘King Of Cards' is an album centred round escape, identity and disappearance. His most accessible work to date, it's a stellar collection of instantaneous melodies and heartfelt lyrics, all driven by Tom's unique voice. "Most of my records are a reaction to the one before, and I was in a pretty dark place when I wrote the last LP," Tom says. "This time I was spending more time in New York, just getting some distance from everything I'd done previously… and letting the songs come out as they happened." "All the songs were written in a 5 month period at the start of last year. I wanted to write in a different way to usual, just to see if I could make something more upbeat, energetic and eclectic. For me every record has to be slightly different, even if it means leaving your comfort zone and trying something unfamiliar." Influenced by contemporaries that include Nick Drake, Nick Cave the Bad Seeds and Jeff Buckley, album highlights include the thundering piano keys of ‘Bright Lights' (the LP's first single, released June 11th), the Dylan-esque heartbreak of ‘Deliver Me' and ‘The Ballad Of Amelia Earhart' - a vibrant, lyrical masterstroke. His eponymous first album was released in 2000 and – among glowing reviews - was nominated for both the 2001 Mercury Music Prize and the 2001 BRIT Award for Best Newcomer. Just Like Blood' followed in 2003 before the equally lauded All Maps Welcome', which was recorded and released in 2005.Tom McRae performed two triumphant fan-shows at London's Cargo earlier this year. Forthcoming dates are listed below. June MON 4 PORTSMOUTH WEDGEWOOD ROOMS TUE 5 BRIGHTON CONCORDE 2 WED 6 READING FEZ THU 7 BIRMINGHAM ACADEMY 2 SAT 9 MANCHESTER ACADEMY 2 SUN 10 LEEDS COCKPIT MON 11 GLASGOW ABC WED 13 BRISTOL TRINITY THU 14 NOTTINGHAM RESCUE ROOMS FRI 15 LONDON SHEPHERDS BUSH EMPIRE Live, Tom McRae will play as a trio, featuring long-term band members Oli Kraus on cello and Olli Cunningham on keyboards."Recording is like trying unsuccessfully to pin a butterfly to cardboard. Playing live is like helping it soar into the rafters. The album ‘King Of Cards' is released on V2 Records, May 14th.The single ‘Bright Lights' follows on June 11th. www.tommcrae.com myspace.com/tommcrae In advance of the release, an exclusive album track Got A Suitcase, Got Regrets' available to download [MP3 format, 128kbps, 3.6MB] for FREE from the below link in exchange for your email address: v2digital.net/uk/ecards/tommcrae Technorati Tags [ Album Release, Download, E Card, MP3, Music News, Single Release, Tom McRae, Tour News, V2 ] Tag RSS feeds [ Album Release Download E Card MP3 Music News Single Release Tom McRae Tour News V2 ] Album Release, Download, E Card, MP3, Music News, Single Release, Tom McRae, Tour News, V2 Share This

Duke Special announces new single from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 03, 2007 348 views / likes
New Single ‘Last Night I Nearly Died' Released May 21st on V2 Having toured Europe with The Divine Comedy, scored glowing reviews across the board and recently announced a major UK tour, Duke Special - the enigmatic performer with dashes of Gershwin and orchestral swing - releases his stunning new single ‘Last Night I Nearly Died (But Woke Up Just In Time)' on V2, May 21st. Taken from the critically acclaimed album ‘Songs from the Deep Forest', the new single is produced by Paul Wilkinson and Dave Lynch. Available exclusively to download, the new single comes with bonus live tracks from Belfast's Ulster Hall. To coincide with the release, the critically acclaimed Irish wonder has announced an 11-date tour, opening in Southampton on May 11th and features a show at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire, May 15th. The full list of dates is overleaf. Hailing from Belfast with a sound that is self-confessed "hobo-chic", he is once heard, never forgotten. Tinged with a Northern Irish lilt and lyrics that could feature in a modern-day fairytale, ‘Last Night I Nearly Died' is the perfect balance of old and new. Boasting the appeal of a three-minute pop song with the incessant charm of an old-school music hall, it's clear why he wowed audiences on Later with Jools Holland and was nominated for this year's Choice Music Prize Awards – the Irish equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize. An accomplished performer, Duke has toured with a host of artists including Rufus Wainwright and Van Morrison – one of Duke's biggest influences. "My sound is a bit vagabondy, but pure and soulful too," he explains. "What I'm trying to put across is something that's more than just a singer-songwriter playing an instrument." Since it's release, the LP ‘Songs From The Deep Forest' has won critical acclaim across the board, including 4-star reviews from Metro and The Independent. It was also listed in Q's Top 100 albums of 2006. "GETS PAID" Download only EP released June 4th New album "Black Lives At The Golden Coast" released June 11th Plus - Band guests on forthcoming Lemonheads tour NEW HEADLINE DATES ANNOUNCED IN LONDON / EXETER Mad, bad and dangerous to know LA 5-piece The Icarus Line finally return 3 years after the release of their critically acclaimed album "Pennance Soiree". First comes a download only EP release on June 4th followed by a new studio album "Black Lives At the Golden Coast" on June 11. The band, who will soon be supporting the reformed Jesus Mary Chain in LA, will be playing in the UK/Ireland as guests on the forthcoming Lemonheads tour. The digital "Gets Paid" EP will be available from the usual sites – tracks will be Gets Paid, Cut back The Heard and Watch Your Step. Gets Paid is the only track that features on the forthcoming new album. Catch the bands live show when they step out with the Lemonheads (and a couple of their own headline shows) at the following places: MAY 03 – CORK Savoy Kork 04 – GALWAY Warwick Hotel 05 – DUBLIN Ambassador Theatre 06 – BELFAST Mandela Hall 08 – EDINBURGH Liquid Rooms 09 – ABERDEEN Lemon Tree 10 – SHEFFIELD Leadmill 12 – EXETER Cavern (headline show) 11 – LONDON KIGS CROSS Water Rats (headline show) 13 – CARDIFF (venue TBC) 14 – LONDON Koko 15 – BIRMINGHAM Academy 2. The Icarus Line have been referred to in the past as a riot – carrying a reputation for violence and chaos wherever they go – but on their upcoming V2 release, Black Lives At The Golden Coast, the Icarus Line have harnessed their wicked impulses into a sonically stunning package. The Los Angeles-born and raised band formed as teenagers in the late 90's and released a handful of 7 s, EP's, and two full-lengths that propelled them out of the West Coast underground scene and into the national spotlight. The line-up has undergone some changes over the last couple of years with bassist Don Devore fleeing the nest and founder member and guitarist Aaron North being rudely stolen by Nine Inch Nails. Singer and songwriter Joe Cardamone, guitarist Alvin DuGuzman and drummer Jeff "The Captain" Watson still hold the fort while new members James Striff (guitar) and Jason Decorse (bass)– have seen the band emerge with a renewed sense of mission. Maxïmo Park release Books From Boxes on June 11th from betweenplanets.co.uk GigCast on May 02, 2007 462 views / likes
Bonus songs include a cover version of The Proclaimers 500 Miles' another in the obituaries series Don McPhee' Maxïmo Park release a new single, taken from their Number Two debuting album Our Earthly Pleasures, through Warp Records on Monday 11th June. Books From Boxes is the follow-up to the Top Ten smash Our Velocity. As a special treat the bonus songs include a cover version of The Proclaimers hardy perennial, 500 Miles. 500 Miles was recorded for Jo Whilley's Live Lounge and when it was originally aired, earlier this month, lit-up Radio One's switchboard with requests to have the song released. Also featured as a B,side is another song in the bands continuing series of obituaries. This time it's famous Guardian photographer Don McPhee, Our Velocity included Robert Altman and Mary O'Brien as bonus tracks. Of the obituaries, singer Paul Smith says "I wrote the lyrics for a song about Mary O'Brien, Dusty Springfield's real name, after reading her obituary. I discovered I was interested in reading obituaries as they can be such a great celebration of a persons life, also it became a way for me to write about other people." Guitarist Duncan Lloyd adds " I had some folk inspired music that Paul put his lyrics to and we recorded them at home so as to make them as simple as possible and expose the most natural aspect of what we do. These obituary songs are probably the most thoughtful set of songs we have written to date." Having just returned from a triumphant, sold-out, European tour, the band are currently on a tour in the Uk.
