Long before the Giants, Niners and Warriors began filling local stadiums and arenas, San Francisco’s sporting spotlight was cast squarely on the boxing canvas. From the bare-fisted brawls of the Gold Rush days until recent prize fights, it was a man’s world all the way. About the only way a woman [...]

MosaicSF #015. Pimpin’ ain’t easy. from MosaicSF. Yes, San Francisco. on July 25, 2006 180 views / likes
Not every kid grows up to become exactly what he wanted to be when he was boy. Which is just as well. Our nation wouldn’t be a nation if it were made up entirely of astronauts, firemen and baseball players. To function, we also need our share of politicians, peanut farmers, plumbers and pimps. Yes, [...]

MosaicSF #010. Getting High in SF -or- Laura’s Trapeze Lessons from MosaicSF. Yes, San Francisco. on May 26, 2006 234 views / likes
In this video (or what we like to call a Podlet) Laura is headed back to school. Only this time she heads to the Circus Center in San Francisco to learn to fly like the pros in Cirque de Soleil and other international shows. The Mission of Circus Center, founded in 1984, is to inspire passion for circus arts through training, performance, and community outreach programs. The best part is anyone can sign up for a range of classes including Chinese acrobatics and the country's only professional clown training program, the Clown Conservatory, which is partially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. But, nooooo clowning for Laura. She went right to the rush of flying in the air (OK, she was strapped in a secure harness with a net below. A system she will also be bringing to our upcoming happy hour bar tours.) It's a good thing Laura isn't afraid of height or making fun of her physical abilities (disabilities). Scott Cameron, trapeze instructor extraordinaire, gained her trust (kina important here) while coaching her to pull off the ultimate accomplishment for a beginner. She also chats with a few students in the class to hear why someone would do this for fun and why aerobatic artists spend their life training for the giant tent. http://www.circuscenter.orgDownload Podcast Video

MosaicSF #002. North Beach Exposed I. from MosaicSF. Yes, San Francisco. on April 03, 2006 195 views / likes
OK, where to begin. Well, let’s begin at one of San Francisco’s most popular neighborhoods – North Beach. North Beach is well-known for its restaurants and bars, molto Italian food, its perch on the edge of Chinatown, and, of course, colorful neon signs to advertise the strip clubs and sex shops. But there's an amazing history to this neighborhood... So, when we settled on North Beach as the subject of our first show, we knew immediately that we had to talk to David Spark. David's a card carrying member of the comedy scene and foot tour guide for - would you believe – FootTours. David's tour is called "Nude, Lewd and Crude: The Rise of Strippers, Comedians and Beats in San Francisco's North Beach." That pretty much says it all. We've spared you the expense (and all the walking) to deliver the juicy details right into your ear. Meanwhile, our San Francisco newbie, Laura, dove right into the seedy underbelly of North Beach at Big Al's, an adult bookstore that has a whole lot more than books. Even one thing that shocks Jim, the owner. Laura also chats with some locals on the streets of North Beach. As you can only imagine, we have just scratched the surface of North Beach. So, stay tuned for our next episode where we continue our tour. This show is 24 minutes long. Download Standard Podcast

MosaicSF #001. The Beginning. from MosaicSF. Yes, San Francisco. on April 03, 2006 174 views / likes
Hello! Step inside. You’ve come to the right place. Make yourself comfortable. Can we get you something to drink? Ah, where to begin… hmmm… well… Everyone knows San Francisco is a world-class city, but there’s more to it than the well-known icons: the Golden Gate Bridge, the Transamerica Building, Alcatraz, the nearby wine country… all of the great Victorian homes and the stunning natural setting on the Pacific coast… all of this is fantastic, but it’s merely a backdrop to the diverse and multicultural and often downright wacky population. There’s no place else like it. Not on this planet, anyway. Mosaic SF is our exploration of the people and the places that make San Francisco so irresistible that you can’t find a damn parking space. This first Podcast is our quick 4-minute introduction to the show and its hosts. Brian Malow. A standup comic who came to SF ten years ago, and hasn’t been able to find the exit. Brian performs locally at the Punchline and Cobb’s Comedy Club. Brian’s co-host is the lovely Laura Quinn, quite the mover and shaker in the business world, and a real whirlwind of energy. Laura is a newcomer to San Francisco, so she’s anxious to see it all and meet absolutely everybody. And we believe she will. Try to keep up. You can learn more about Brain and Laura in our Hosts section (look to your right.) You can even learn a bit more about how we got here by reading the Producers section. Anyway, listen to the show! More weekly episodes are on their way. Explore the site – we’ll be posting pictures and video clips, and feel free to drop us an email anytime. We’d love to hear from you. Together, we’re going to explore the City and its people.Download Standard Podcast
