His lecture focussed on the challenges faced by Europe and Australia on the threat of radical islamisation. French performer Pierre Rigal is the coolest new name in dance. Discovered by Mikhail Baryshnikov and renowned for his physical prowess, his agile inventiveness, his control and imagination this French former athlete is taking the dance world by storm with his new show, Press. Xavier Bichon speaks to acclaimed ballerina Maina Gielgud who is a former British ballet dancer and a veteran ballet administrator. She was artistic director of the Australian Ballet from 1983 to 1996 and is that company s longest serving director to date. She had a twenty year career as a dancer in Europe and the United Kingdom. Gielgud directed the Royal Danish Ballet between 1997 and 1999. Until 2005, she held the artistic associate position at the Houston Ballet. Maina has danced with the most famous dancers of the XXth century ranging from Roland Petit to Mikhail Baryshnikov. Maina was in Sydney to present The Exquisite Hour, created and directed by world renowned choreographer Maurice B jart. This magical work of theatre, based on the play Happy Days by Samuel Beckett stras Maina Gielgud who is partnered by the great dramatic dancer and former Principal Artist of The Australian Ballet, Paul DeMasson.

Persepolis is a 2007 animated film based on Marjane Satrapi s autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. The film was written and directed by Satrapi with Vincent Paronnaud. The story follows a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution, which goes horribly wrong with Islamic fundamentalists taking power and creating a new theocratic tyranny themselves; the story ends with Marjane as a 21-year-old expatriate. The title is a reference to the historic city of Persepolis. The film won the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and was released in France and Belgium on June 27. In her acceptance speech, Satrapi said uot;Although this film is universal, I wish to dedicate the prize to all Iranians. uot; The film was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Marie Brokensha is an internationally acclaimed, award winning French photographer. Simon Rann and Pierrik Malebranche are two actors with the Compagnie Philippe Genty presenting Lands End in Australia as part of their world tour. Simon Rann was born in Australia and his first artistic collaboration with the company goes back to 1996 with Stoweaway. This is his second artistic collaboration with the company for Lands End (La Fin des Terres). Pierrik Malebranche is French and joined Compagnie Philippe Genty in 2005 for Lands End. Between 1982 and 1996, he trained as a circus and mime artiste, combining a dance and actor training. Xavier Bichon speaks to French independent film producer Yves Rescalat who tells us the long journey to rehabilitate a forgotten French master piece, Georges Mathieu ou la Fureur d Etre (1971). It was directed by the legendary Fr d ric Rossif (1922 - 1990) who is mostly known for his pioneering productions for French television. Georges Mathieu ou la Fureur d Etre is fueled with the mastery and poetic grandeur that set Frederic Rossif apart from all the other filmmakers. This film marks one of the very first of the fructuous collaboration with the great critically-acclaimed composer Vangelis.Vangelis improvised live on screen while painter Georges Mathieu was painting two giant canvases: The Election of Charles Quint and the Necessity of Hope. Les Femmes de l Ombre is a spy thriller set during World War 2 in occupied France about the role of women in the Resistance.The film is based on true stories, true events, those namely of Lise Villameur n e de Baissac, born in Mauritius and who became an agent of the SOE ( Special Operations Executive ) created by Winston Churchill. She is immediately assigned to an urgent mission: the rescue of a British agent who has fallen into German hands while preparing for D-Day on the Normandy beaches. Louise must first put together an all-female commando unit.
