Xavier Bichon speaks to French independent film producer Yves Rescalat who tells us the long journey to rehabilitate a forgotten French master piece, Georges Mathieu ou la Fureur d Etre (1971). It was directed by the legendary Fr d ric Rossif (1922 - 1990) who is mostly known for his pioneering productions for French television. Georges Mathieu ou la Fureur d Etre is fueled with the mastery and poetic grandeur that set Frederic Rossif apart from all the other filmmakers. This film marks one of the very first of the fructuous collaboration with the great critically-acclaimed composer Vangelis.Vangelis improvised live on screen while painter Georges Mathieu was painting two giant canvases: The Election of Charles Quint and the Necessity of Hope. Female Agents
from SBS French program on July 31, 2008
24 views / likes
Xavier Bichon talks to French director Jean-Paul Salom about his latest movie, Female Agents (Les Femmes de l Ombre). Based on true events, true stories and real heroines, Female Agents is a powerful rendition of the challenges that faced female World War II Resistance fighters, who were constantly in the shadow of men and accorded little importance for the roles they played in a violent and horrific war. A member of the French Resistance, Louise (Sophie Marceau) flees to London after her husband s summary execution. She is recruited by the Special Operations Executive (SOE), an intelligence and sabotage service overseen by Churchill himself. She is immediately assigned to an urgent mission: the rescue of a British agent who has fallen into German hands while preparing for D-Day on the Normandy beaches. Louise must first put together an all-female commando unit. She will stop at nothing to get exactly the right women for the mission s special requirements, even if it means lying, blackmailing or securing pardons for serving prisoners.

Xavier Bichon talks to renowned Australian director Neil Armfield about his latest play, Scorched (Belvoir Theatre until 7 September 2008). Scorched (Incendies in French) was written by one of the most acclaimed writers in the French-speaking world. Wajdi Mouawad is a Lebanese-born, Paris-raised, French-Canadian, and he calls his work a quest for sense and beauty Like any great mystery thriller it begins with the reading of a will, in the office of a small-time family solicitor in a modern Western city. Nawal s final wish for her twin children, Janine and Simon, is to solve the mystery of their origins. As they take up the challenge, the story plunges into the maelstrom of what is perhaps Lebanon but could be anywhere from North Africa to the Balkans.
