Blitzkrieg Bop (Tom Baker mix) by Electramones

I seem to send you one of these every year, here's the lunatic backstory for this year's entry: Imagine an alternative history if you will. A world where the Ramones were not formed on the mean streets of New York in 1974, but on the rather duller, greyer streets of Sheffield in 1978. Their earliest memories are of hiding behind the sofa, terrified of the Daleks and Cybermen, and traumatized by the electronic wail of the Doctor Who theme. School days were filled with the sounds of the Glitter Band, Sweet and Slade, and after finally deciding to form a band they choose to draw musical inspiration not from the Beach Boys, Beatles, Bay City Rollers and 1910 Fruitgum Company but instead from the hot new electronic sounds of The Normal, Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League. Thus they find themselves signed not to Sire records, but to Fast, and as stablemates of the Human League, they need to make a big impact with their debut single. And in just 45 seconds of pure inspiration, 'drummer' Tommy Electramone writes the anthemic 'Blitzkrieg Bop'. Well, a lunatic backstory justifies a mashup of the greatest punk rock song of all time with the two greatest electronic tracks of all time (Warm Leatherette and Delia's masterpiece). Enjoy! p.s. truncated to 90 seconds so I can post a 'performance' video to Flickr.

Yes, I went with a funny remix name. -_-' I didn't spend nearly as much time on this as with The 90s (which should also have been included in the update, if not, then sorry.) and Howell DXi, but I'm still very fond of it. Basically, it's a remake of the 1963 Derbyshire theme, with some nods toward Howell's theme. It was made mostly on GMedia's Minimonsta, which is a VST Mini Moog. The only 2 things I've ripped from any Who theme are (obviously) the scream and sting effects. I was going to make this part of my own rendition of Gold's version, but i just ended up with an "3pic ph4i1". :P But who knows? Maybe one day I'll do something that's actually original and sounds good. Enjoy.

The 90s by Beta Link

What if? What if Doctor Who didn't end in 1989 and went into the 90s? Well actually that wasn't my original idea... This actually just came out of boredom when I realized GForce's Minimonsta was so good at doing the melody to the Doctor Who theme tune. :P I just quickly came up with the name in like, 5 seconds, because the name I had picked out had already sort of been stolen (Starfield). While I was getting together the instruments for each track, I decided I wanted to use elements from all the different themes... However, only 3 really made it in. And as you can see, they were from the Delaware, Howell's, and McCullogh's versions of the theme tune. The zap in the beginning came directly from Howell DXi but with new effects added. The bass line (made up of 2 parts) also came directly fromHowell DXi, but arranged like McCullogh's bassline. The first and third parts of the melody were made in GForce's Minimonsta. The second part of the melody also came from Howell DXi, but a different version which I submitted twice, but never got in. The same goes for the end explosion. So... uhh... I guess that's it. I had alot of fun making it, and I hope you all enjoy listening to it!

As a huge fan of Dr. Who, particularly the music and sound design, and also classic Nintendo sounds, I went looking for an NES-music styled version of the Dr. Who theme. As I couldn't find one, I made one. :-)

Middle 8 Meddley by Andy T
from Whomix Radio on April 05, 2008

This is my medley of all the different Middle-8s presented on Doctor Who over the years. I'm not a musician so these are all sampled - and processed! - from various sources of the original broadcast music. The origins of this came after I first heard the new Middle-8 when watching the Second New Series on DVD. I was so elated that I quickly recorded the soundtrack to my computer, then going through my Doctor Who library patched my own medley together. It was rough but good enough for me. That is, until I found this site the other day. After listening to many very good covers, medleys and remixes, probably all of them by people with far more talent and skill in this sort of thing than I have, I decided my little lame remix effort could stand some improvement. I even mentioned my own previous attempt in my review of Nick's excellent Regenerations 2006 remix. So today I went and gathered all my best sources of the Dr Who Theme and made another go at it. Since this was to focus on Middle-8s, I didn't really want to include a whole lot of other parts of the Dr Who Theme. However just fading it in partway into the Derbyshire theme was only partially satisfying to me. So I also tried another approach where I took the "stutter start" from the early 70s as rough inspiration and then things got weirder and out of hand by the time I got finished. This is the mix with the more tame/lame intro. Two other comments... First of all, if someone else has done a Middle 8 medley here before, and I've not heard it yet, apologlies. Nick's Regenerations 2006 is the closest I've seen yet, but mine is focused on Middle 8's and not the more general approach he took. Second, I've not had time yet to download and listen to all the covers and remixes here, but of the 40 or so I've listened to so far, I've not heard a single reference to the infamous "Delaware" mix of the theme. I did use it - I consider it "canon" because it did make it onto some episodes shown overseas - and it was produced under Derbyshire by the Workshop, after all. It's probably the worst broadcast version of the theme out there, but I can't bring myself to completely hate it, so it is included as one of the 7 Middle-8s here. (that was my working title of this, 7x8, but I later decided a more descriptive name was more appropriate)

Hi there! The attached is a Dr. Who re-theming I did, actually just for fun but I thought I would share the results with you, as I've enjoyed listening to some of the other examples on your site. This one is intended to be quite different, at least at first, as it evolves from a very simple, eccentric progression into a techno/dance backed track where the famous Dr.Who theme melody comes in. The only samples used are the tardis sound and dalek quotations, I recreated the theme rather than use samples of it. My music website is www.jimmo.org and I welcome feedback! :) All the best! :)

Hi all! First of all, thanks for the nice comments on my 2008 Theme Reconstruction mix and I'm glad you liked it. :)I intended on making a much longer version as well, and I've done all I can with it so here it is! I used the actual new theme (from Voyage of the Damned) as the foundation of this mix and reconstructed other elements such as the bassline and the melody (which I think/hope is much improved since my last mix, where it was quite thin and hard to hear), plus some of the brass and strings. I also included a nice version of the middle 8 which was heard at the end of one of the Series 2 episodes (where the strings were notched up a little). There are many samples taken from various clips of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales put in all over the place. I also included bits of the Derbyshire and Howell basslines into the intro and later on as well, since Murray Gold was influenced by both versions to conjure up this new theme. So to put it simply, there isn't much original material in this mix - the only prime examples being the Bassline, the chasing strings, some brass bits, the Piano and some of the Elec.Guitar. The weaknesses in this that I've acknowledged (so far!) is that it seems quite cluttered in some places (and too 'blank' in others), the bassline is a bit too quiet and those nice string versions of the Middle 8 I mentioned are also too quiet to be fully appreciated. But oh well. I used Sony ACID Music Studio, Nero Wave Editor and a Yamaha PSR-1500 to help me with this. Oh, and I hope you enjoy the little intro I put at the beginning - it gives a clue as to why I named the mix 'Crowded' :) Enjoy! Looking forward to the comments! Eaglestriker

Love the site - a friend pointed me at it a while ago and I regularly check in to see if there are new versions for me to listen to... some time ago I sent this version for submission and it never seemed to make the light of day, so I thought I'd try again. I release breakbeat records under the name of Razorcuts, so I thought I'd tackle the theme in a breakbeat style. Hope you like it!

Hello, Please find attached an mp3 file of a theme done by Jason Cullimore and myself (Patrick Wigfull) sometime in 1993 on a 386 and Roland sound card. I apologize for the imperfect sound quality of the file, but it's the best I have. Love the site - great to hear so many contributions from so many different people. The wonders of the digital age! Hello, fellow Whomixers! How goes it? Alright, so here I am again. Believe me, I'm as surprised as anyone else. I never thought I'd get around to working on lengthening the 'Simple Piano Mix' version of the theme that I submitted last year, but a lot of people who posted comments asked for something longer. I haven't owned a synthesizer in a long time, so I didn't think I'd be able to do anything else. However, I recently re-discovered a MIDI-writing program called Noteworthy Composer. I used to toy around with it back in the late 1990s, but since I can't read sheet music I could only ever sort of tinker rather than actually compose. In the same archive where I found my NWC install file, I also found an NWC-formatted version of the 'Simple Piano Mix'. I'd forgotten I'd even worked with it in NWC. When stripped down, the Doctor Who theme is a pretty easy tune to work with. So this morning I got into NWC and I started tinkering. After six hours, this is the end result. It's not just an extended version of the 'Simple Piano Mix', but more of a remix. There are still piano elements, but the bass line is now played by MIDI guitars, there is a drum kit, a secondary snyth drum (that only appears briefly before the first middle 8), and a sample called a 'caliope lead', which is used for some vaguely Murray Gold-style elements in the second half of the track. This version is definitely a lot busier than the 'Simple Piano Mix'. This is only a MIDI file recorded as an MP3, but it still sounds pretty good. It'd be nice to hear it with some proper samples some day, but in the meantime I hope you guys like this one. Cheers! -J. Thomas Jeans

Hopefully this time I submitted my remix properly. Last time, the remix sucked, and I didn't send the E-Mail correctly... Anyway, this is yet another remake of the Howell theme. The only problem was that I was limited to the DreamStation DXi2 that came with Cakewalk's Music Creator 3, thus the remix's name. Although, come to think of it, I also used Goldwave (a WAV editor). Although I was limited to only a few programs, I must say I am happy with the mix. Hopefully in the future though, I can get my hands on some VST plugins like Arturia's CS-80v... But for now, I don't have enough money for those (I'm only 13). So I hope you all enjoy Howell DXi.

After listening to other fans work I thought I'd have a go myself - so here is my first attempt. After listening to the Children in Need Concert "A Celebration", that was broadcast Christmas 2006, I was so taken aback by the fantastic opening sequence performed by Melanie Pappenheim that I felt that I had to somehow include these haunting vocals into a remix. So I interwove them, with a bit of echo, into the intro to the Eighth Doctor TV Movie Theme (they seem to go so well together) and then added various quotes from the first seven Doctors. This leads you into the theme tune used in "The Trial of a Timelord" season in 1986 (my favourite version). A short interlude with the Ninth Doctor taken from "Rose" (again enhanced with the Children in Need Concert opening sequence) finishes with a reworked Full Orchestral version of the Murray Gold Theme. This has been enhanced with various sound effects, echoes and a little something extra at the end. If others like what I have done, or can suggest improvements, then I may have a go at doing another.

Yet another mix from me, my first mix went down i think OK which is good! this new mix i think needs a bit of work i will admit i may even try and turn it in to an opining titles theme!!! I thought it would be nice to hear some constructive critisism from the Doctor Who fans to see where they think i can improve. This mix has samples used from both the "Doctor Who Murray Gold Theme" mixed in with samples from the remix of "Singin' In The Rain" by "Mint Royale" after the Paul McGann Doctor Who dance on you tube featuring the singin' in the rain track i thought i would put both tracks together which i think works well but anyway see what you all think! Thank you all, Doctor_55 P.S. the 8th Doctor McGann dance thing is here just if you wondered http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPuLvHw3wS0

Hi all, The Christmas Episode 'Voyage of the Damned' of Doctor Who introduced a new revamp of the theme, from Murray Gold. I enjoyed the new theme very much and decided to make a rough reconstruction of the theme so that I can enjoy its rocky edge without the disturbances of relatives and BBC announcers, plus I wanted to fill the gaps and have a fun guess at what it might sound next year! :D Its a quicky - well, it took less time than my other remixes, but I'm quite happy with it now. Its not note-perfect, it wasn't meant to be - I just wanted to capture the new theme's feel. There some problems with the Derbyshire samples as well, its sort of become engulfed by the Orchestral section. But oh well. The Orchestra section itself was sampled from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales' performance of the theme at the Children in Need Concert from 2006. A sample from the actual 2006-2007 theme is present as well (the Middle 8, mainly). Only ONE sample from the actualy New theme itself is here - that being the muffled whine at the very end. I couldn't simulate it, even though it doesn't sound that hard to do so! Oh well, ta waith. I don't really play Guitar much, so that was a bit of a nightmare. Its not a prominent sound in this anyhow so it doesn't really matter! :P I compiled this using Acid Music Studio and modified sounds using Nero Wave Editor. I used my PSR-1500 to record the piano and strings, and...thats about it really! Took me, in total, about 6 hours. I hope you like it! As I said, its just a rough guess, and only contains the obvious elements in the new theme that were heard - there are probably loads more! Oh, and I hope you all had a nice Christmas! :)

I've edited my "Gold Rush" mix to try and recreate the sound of the 2008 theme (first heard in Voyage of the Damned). Personally, I prefer Gold's previous attempts, but it's certainly not my least favourite version. From Stephen Willis, aged 15.

As many of you know, I have been working on a Howell mix for quite a while now. I was never really pleased with my earlier "DigiHowell" mix, because, although I liked it, I thought it lacked a lot of the things that make the Howell theme stand out. I started work on a new Howell recreation, starting with the bass. Marinedalek's video helped a lot with this, as did some helpful tips from Danny Stewart. Once I had the bassline down (which I'm still not 100% happy with, but I think it's at least a recognizable imitation) I started work on the melody. Melody I was quite easy to do; just a portamento triangle wave with some echo and a tad of reverb, but Melody II was a lot harder, and, like parts of the bassline, I'm still not happy with that. I did run it through a vocoder but it only really just made it sound like some weird buzzy Cyberman choir. I filtered it and made it sound a bit more acceptable and then knocked up a quick Middle 8 with some ascending bell arpeggios. Then, I was basically done. I left the project to mould for a few days and came back to it. By the time I had got back to it, I had since downloaded tons of soundfonts (some rubbish, most ok, some brilliant). Quite a few of these were orchestral soundfonts, so I started adding these to the tune, adding a more racy and Gold-ish feel to the track. I won't really describe much more of the track than that because I think it works better if you listen to it for yourself. All I can add is that I am very proud of this mix and I hope you all will like it too. I may even make opening + closing cuts of it if demand is high enough. I have included both versions (with and without Gold elements). Excluding the opening scream, no samples of any Doctor Who theme were used in the making of this track. Excluding Gold

Hi If it wasn't for this superb website my work wouldn't have been noticed and I wouldn't be working for Big Finish as a sound designer, editor and composer right now. As a big thank you to Mutagene and all of you who have supported the site over the years I give you a special mix of the Opening Theme and Act 2 Closing Theme from my score for The Dalek Masterplan stage adaptation. I would also like to thank Rob Thrush for finding me on the site and believing in me and to Nick Scovell and Nick Briggs for trusting me to create the perfect atmosphere for their productions. Again, a huge thanks to all of you. Please do not use this music for anything without my permission. Contact me via my website.
