TheSailingChannel presents "Irish Interlude," a sneak-peek from Lin and Larry Pardey's newest 74-minute documentary, Cruising has NO LIMITS. Available at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/chnl Cruising has NO LIMITS DVD (74-minutes) $22.95. Starting at their New Zealand home base, the Pardeys recount some of their most memorable adventures during more than 30 years of cruising. They begin by taking you across the Indian Ocean on board their 29-foot, 9-inch engineless cutter, Taleisin: destination, southern Africa. There, you follow Lin and Larry as they plan and execute a seven month “Champagne Safari on a Beer Budget”. After outfitting a 4X4, you travel into the remote Kalahari, experience life at a sculptors’ commune in northern Zimbabwe, and animal-watch at waterholes far from game reserves. Next you cross the south Atlantic to Brazil's off-shore islands where Lin and Larry experience a unique, eight-month-long encounter with nine Brazilian families who dream of their own blue water adventures. Finally, you sail north to Ireland’s music-filled shores and a summer of history, classic sailing, and friendship. Along the way, you’ll learn some of the truisms that could help you get out adventuring sooner and more enjoyably—whether on the water or on land. You’ll also come to know more about this longtime cruising couple who have been dubbed “the enablers” because of their enthusiasm and willingness to share their secrets for exploring the far corners of the world on a limited budget. “After voyaging tens of thousands of engineless miles under sail, penning more useful marine books than Hiscock and Moitessier combined, and receiving more awards for their pursuits than Tom Hanks has for his, Lin and Larry Pardey are entitled to their well-earned nautical opinions.” --HERB McCORMACK, EDITOR-AT-LARGE, CRUISING WORLD Be sure to subscribe via iTunes to receive free video podcast for cruising sailors from TheSailingChannel.tv. TheSailingChannel presents a slice of the cruising lifestyle. Have you ever dreamt of "sailing off into the sunset?" Then join Bob and Kaye aboard their 36 foot sloop, "Bettie" as they cruise from Los Angeles to the Bahamas via the Panama Canal on the first leg of their sailing adventure "Bettie" is based on a Cascade 36 hull. It was custom molded for Bob by Yacht Constructors in Portland Oregon back in 1978. Four years and lots and lots of man hours later Bob splashed her. "Bettie" has a raised freeboard that allows for a flush deck design. This is a fast-paced documentary, with gorgeous photography, that will give you a first hand look at the cruising lifestyle. Over 10,000 miles have passed under Bettie’s keel since Bob and Kaye left Los Angeles in 2004. They sailed down the west coast to Panama, through the Canal, east to Cartagena, Columbia then north to Honduras and east across the Caribbean to the Bahamas. That's the focus of this video. Next, Bob and Kaye cruised north along the eastern U.S. seaboard to Boston. The geese were flying south by October beckoning them back to warmer climes, so they headed south to Guatemala and Honduras. After refitting and some time back in L.A., Bob and Kaye sailed back across the Caribbean to the Florida Keys. TheSailingChannel is partnering with Bob and Kaye to produce a continuing series of cruising documentaries as we follow "Bettie" to the far corners of the world. Bob Steadman is a highly acclaimed Hollywood cinematographer. He recently served as technical consultant to the Director of Photography on the feature, Body of Lies directed by Ridley Scott and starring Leonardo de Caprio and Russell Crowe. TheSailingChannel is honored to offer what many consider to be the finest sailing film ever made: With Jean-du-Sud Around the World. A Film by Yves Gélinas. Twice winner of the Palme d'Or at the Larochelle Sailing Film Festival (for Part One in 1983 and Part Two in ’85) and of 8 awards in other festivals, Jean-du-Sud celebrates the filmmaker's 28,000 mile, single-handed circumnavigation through the roaring forties and around Cape Horn aboard his Alberg 30 sloop. Available for purchase or rental at: http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/jean-du-sud/ 100 minutes DVD: $19.95 plus S&H Digital Download: 7-day Rental: $4.99 Purchase: $9.95 Shot in 16-mm film with sync sound, Jean-du-Sud puts you in the cockpit: Yves speaks as he would to a fellow crew member. Unless you do it yourself, this is as close as you'll ever get to a solo circumnavigation. In attempting to sail non–stop between Saint-Malo, France and Gaspé, QC, Canada through the Roaring Forties and around Cape Horn alone aboard his boat, Jean-du-Sud, Canadian Yves Gélinas added his personal share to the art of sailing a small boat around the world. Besides the voyage, his accomplishments included the design of a system to self-steer his boat, the writing of a book to document the voyage, and the shooting of a 16 mm film while sailing. Even though Yves was unable to complete the circumnavigation non-stop, Jean-du-Sud was the smallest boat up to that time to sail that route. In acknowledgement, the Joshua Slocum Society International bestowed on Gélinas the Golden Circle Award. "I had a lot of time to meditate – the phone did not ring often – but I must say I haven’t had any great revelations, I did not experience nirvana or samadhi. Yet I have known many moments of total contentment : ends of days when the sun dove into the sea splashing half the sky with warm light...The trade wind caressing naked skin (it is almost as good as if it came from a loved one)…The simple pleasure of watching the bow of my boat slice through the surface of the sea, pushed, but also guided by an invisible force : the magic of the wind…." At the United States Sailboat Show, TheSailingChannel.TV's Joe Duley interviews Roger Marquis of True Wind, makers of a unique line of premium sailcloth duffle and gear bags. We really like the quality of the True Wind bags. Nothing like the feel of brand new sailcloth! And the finishing is top-notch. In fact, we like their gear so much we decided to sell it on our site at www.TheSailingChannel.TV/store/gear About True Wind Sailcloth... The Dacron® sailcloth found in True Wind bags is custom-woven in Ireland by Hood Sailmakers, one of the world’s leading sailcloth manufacturers and sail designers. Founded in the 1950’s by the legendary Ted Hood, Hood Sailmakers pioneered the use of Dacron® for sail making, and has been at the forefront of sailcloth manufacturing ever since. Strong, durable and resistant to sunlight, abrasion and water, Dacron® is an ideal fabric for soft-sided bags, and the sailcloth found in True Wind products is the very same cloth that is used to power some of the largest and most prestigious racing, cruising and classic yachts in the world. Another distinguishing feature of True Wind sailcloth is that it is new, not recycled, refurbished, seconds or scraps. By using new sailcloth, True Wind is better able to control the overall quality of the fabric, especially as it relates to its color, weave and finish. Crisp and bright in texture and appearance, the sailcloth in a True Wind bag will take on a patina over time and soften with use. Handcrafted in the U.S.A., True Wind bags feature superior craftsmanship, original design, and come in a wide range of colors. Styles include Navigator Duffles, Classic Totes, Regatta Totes, Sailor Bags, and Ditty Bags. TheSailingChannel.TV uses historic images and classical music to bring to life its review of A New Voyage Round The World by William Dampier. First published in 1697, a new edition from 1500 Books makes this little known classic available to the modern reader. Providing the inspiration for such works as Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels, William Dampier (1652 - 1715) was the forefather of the English narrative. Pirate, explorer and naturalist, Dampier provides one of the earliest and most eloquent accounts of discovery and piracy on the high seas with keen observations of people, places, and nature. Dampier circled the globe three times, wrote of the wildlife and flora of the Galapagos 150 years before Darwin, visited Australia close to 80 years before Cook, and his innovations in navigational technology were studied by Cook and Nelson. Filled with accounts of privateering exploits as well as the first detailed descriptions of plants and animals ever recorded by an Englishmen, A New Voyage Round the World provides a rare and exciting glimpse into life on the ocean at a time when a true map of the world did not yet exist. Features an introduction by Kris Lane, College of William and Mary. Closing in on 200,000 miles of blue water voyaging, Lin and Larry Pardey are recognized as the sailing world's most experienced and knowledgeable cruising couple. In Storm Tactics, they provide a detailed look at the techniques and gear that have kept them safe at sea. "... I wanted to show how the sailor's safety valve--heaving-to-works, and the slick it creates. It's hard for people to imagine the almost magic effect of a slick as it saps the power of breaking waves...." - Larry Pardey. "One of the reasons I wanted to sail east-to-west around Cape Horn was to take video shots proving that small vessels can safely weather storms if they are well outfitted and efficiently handled," Larry Pardey stated after his record-breaking voyage. Lin and Larry completed their against-the-wind rounding of the Great Southern Capes on board their engineless 29-foot Taleisin, weathering nine days of storm-force winds to reach Puerto Montt in Chile. There they interviewed several high-latitude voyagers, prepared the narrative, and shot further detailed footage to complete the Storm Tactics video, a project Lin and Larry conceived almost ten years ago. Read more about Storm tactics at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/storm_tactics/about_storm_tactics.htm Add the Storm Tactics Handbook to the Video and you've got the ultimate reference set. Modern methods of heaving-to for survival in extreme conditions. Trysail and para-anchor technology for all types of boats and sailors. Concise and easy to understand, Storm Tactics Handbook covers all types of sailing vessels from the most classic of cruising yachts to modern race boats. This is MUST KNOW information for every sailor, coastal or offshore. Used as a text at sailing schools and cruising seminars for offshore rallies in the UK, the USA and New Zealand. Now in its sixth printing, Lin and Larry add revisions to each new printing to keep Storm Tactics Handbook up to date. "...Surely this book will result in cruising sailors going through gales at sea in a lot more comfort and with a lot more confidence.” -- Roger C. Taylor, Author of Elements of Seamanship “We seldom review a book twice, but there are exceptions for exceptional books and this is one.” -- Classic Boat Magazine Purchase the Storm Tactics video and the companion 176 page Handbook at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/storm_tactics. TheSailingChannel.TV covers the 2006 Annapolis-Maritime Republic of Eastport Tug-of-War: MRE Men, sponsored by River Crest Design Build versus Annapolis Men.. Once a year, local and national attention focuses on the Annapolis Harbor — or, as some like to call it, the Gulf of Eastport — for a competition unlike any in the world: the Slaughter Across the Water. It is the longest tug-of-war over a body of water in the world. The Tug is staged between the Maritime Republic of Eastport, the MRE, and Downtown Annapolis, featuring a 1700’ rope, over 350 tuggers, and more than a thousand spectators. The Tug transforms Downtown Annapolis and Eastport with a festival-like atmosphere that includes food vendors, cheering crowds, and all sorts of local color. The Tug draws on the rivalry between Eastport and the City of Annapolis, with civic pride on both sides allowing this zany event to improve more than community morale. The MRE has raised more than $180,000 for charities over the past eight years. Read more about the 2006 Tug... What is MRE? Like any great movement, the concept for the Maritime Republic of Eastport began in a local pub over a couple mugs of beer. The prime mission was to find a creative way to promote and encourage the patronage of Eastport businesses that were destined to be hurt by the Maryland State Highway Administration's shutting down for repair of the drawbridge connecting mainland Annapolis with the Eastport peninsula. The citizens of Eastport took advantage of their isolation to sever their social, political and economic ties as well. Read more about the MRE on their website.... This is the ninth and final episode in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. You can view the full 22-minute video at Sail.tv In this final episode, we learn about the two Bow Men who make up the foredeck team and run the front of the boat. Their main responsibility is to prepare, set, dose, and pack the spinnaker and head sails as quickly and correctly as possible. During the pre-start, the Bow Men play a critical role in signaling the distance to the start line and the position of opponents to the Helmsman. The Bow Men must possess a high level of agility, athleticism, and strength as they perform acrobatic maneuvers to adjust the spinnaker pole and sails at the business end of an America's Cup racing yacht. Thank you to BMW ORACLE for making this video series available. You can view the entire 22-minute BMW ORACLE Racing Crew video on Sail.TV. This is the eighth in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we observe teamwork of the Mast and Pit Men who work around the mast and in the front end of the cockpit. The Mast Men handle the halyards at the mast that raise and lower sails. They also grind the mainsail upwind and during the prestart. The Pit Men coordinate the sail hosts and drops, controlling halyards, foreguys, and other control lines. They also communicate the Afterguard's plan on sail changes to the Bow Team. Upwind, the Pit Men grind the genoa. You can view the entire 22-minute BMW ORACLE Racing Crew video on Sail.TV. This is the seventh in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode we watch the Trimmers tune the sails for maximum performance. The headsail trimmer crouches low on the leeward side of the boat just behind the trailing edge of the genoa. This is right in the wind slot between the headsail and mainsail which acts like a turbo charger, firing alternate bursts of sea spray and wind at the trimmer as the boat accelerates. "You are pretty well rinsed by the time you come off the water" says Zach Hurst, one of the younger trimmers aboard. Directing the muscle power of the grinders, who handle loads up to 4-tons, the trimmer alters the shape of the headsail. He coordinates with the mainsail trimmer who uses a winch to position the boom and adjust the angle of the mainsail to the wind. Depending on the course direction, the trimmers adjust the sails for optimum shape and speed. Their interaction directs the flow of wind over the sails, driving the yacht forward. You can view the entire 22-minute BMW ORACLE Racing Crew video on Sail.TV. For updates and coverage of the 32nd America's Cup from Valencia, Spain, tune into Sail.TV. This is the sixth in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we learn about the "work horses" of the crew: the grinders. It's like working out on a gigantic exercise machine for 10 hours a day. Physically demanding, the grinders work in pairs, using a variety of winches to shape the sails in coordination with the trimmers. Sailing upwind, the loads are huge: about 4 tons on the headsail sheet and 5 to 6 tons on the mainsheet. During the pre-starts and tacking duels, the grinders work like demons to keep up with rapidly changing sail settings. "You need to remember to breathe," says veteran grinder Graig Monk. "If you keep your breathing rhythm right, you recover quicker." You can view the entire 22-minute BMW ORACLE Racing Crew video on Sail.TV. This is the fifth in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode we ride along on the weather boat with team meteorologist, Chris Bedford. Chris heads the weather team, receiving updates from other team weather boats and weather buoys strung out along the race course. Chris analyzes the data then relays it o the strategist aboard the race boat. There the Afterguard combines the weather analysis with other information to determine the best racing strategy for current conditions. This is the fourth in a series of videos describing the roles of crew members aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we hear from the boat's strategist, Eric Doyle. Prior to the race, the strategist communicates with weather boats out on the race course. He then confers with the Helmsman and other members of the Afterguard to develop a race strategy. The strategist also works closely with the mainsail trimmer to adjust the backstays which alter the curvature of the mast, determining the shape of the genoa and mainsail. When the wind is light, the strategist goes aloft to search for a breeze. Eric raced in the 2000 America's Cup as mainsail trimmer aboard Conner's Stars & Stripes. His honors include 1999 North American and World Star Class Champion. You can view the entire 22-minute BMW ORACLE Racing Crew video on Sail.TV. This is the third in a series of videos describing the roles of crewmembers aboard the BMW ORACLE America's Cup Racing Yacht. In this episode, we hear from another member of the Afterguard, Peter Isler, the boat's Navigator. Peter helped win the America's Cup as navigator aboard Dennis Conner's Stars & Stripes in 1987 and 1988. He's competed in every America's Cup since. The Navigator's primary job is track the yacht's course using the on-board computer. Linked into Global Positioning Satellites (GPS), the computer constantly updates the boat's position in relation to the course and its opponent. The navigator queries the computer using a wireless, hand-held tablet and interacts with the the Helmsman, Tactician, and Strategist to keep the yacht racing as efficiently as possible. In this episode, we hear from another member of the Afterguard, Sten Mohr, the boat's Tactician. His primary job is to recommend to the helmsman when to jibe (turn away from the wind) or tack (turn into the wind) so the boat travels the most effective course to the next racing mark. Sten is a Danish match racing veteran ranked highly by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). He was the first European to be ranked as the number one match racer. Sten recently sailed on the Victory Challenge Team and has achieved several Grade 1 victories. You can view the entire 22-minute BMW ORACLE Racing Crew video on Sail.TV. The BMW ORACLE America's Cup racing yacht features a state-of-the-art keel that accounts for 19 of the vessel's 24 legal tons. Designing and manufacturing the keel posed an exceptional engineering challenge. Engineers needed to balance strength with maximum hydrodynamic efficiency. The keel's bulb or "bomb" must be heavy enough to keep the yacht upright and stable. At the same time the keelfin and bulb must have limited resistance to water flow to maintain maximum boat speed. Further complicating the design is the fact that the keel tends to vibrate as the yacht increases speed. These vibrations transfer to the hull affecting the yacht's structural integrity. To improve the yacht's stiffness, BMW engineers have applied similar technology used in stiffening the companies motor cars. They've also refined the shape and position of the keel wings to increase boat speed. Watch SailTV on TheSailingChannel.TV to see more racing and cruising videos, full screen on your PC, 24x7x365.
