Etcetera - 07.02.08 - Life and Death
from Etcetera on July 03, 2008

This week on Etcetera, The Comedy Ninja and The Spastic Mystic joined me in the studio for a ride down the Internet Stream of Collective Consciousness. That s my silly way of saying my friends Matt and Sharon stopped by and we recorded a conversation that seemed directed by a Mind beyond ourselves. I was all prepared to talk about my recent fascination with death (and birth as the beginning and end of death). Then, Matt gave us the update on the impending arrival of baby Alejandro and Jordo called in to talk about walking through his valley of the shadow of death after a recent breakup (which is how Sharon s book, A Doxology in Darkness, begins)! The coolness of experiencing all this is probably lost in my description, use one of the options below to listen and see if any of this means anything to you. Here are some links that came up in this show -Chapters one, two and three of Sharon s book, A Doxology in Darkness. -Why They re Not Emergent - Kevin Ted on SBE -Thanks to Bill Mallonee and Leo Nevillo for providing music for the show. Also, I ll be on vacation next week, so no Etcetera for you. Look for new episodes starting the week of July 14. But, check the blog next week for chapter 4 of A Doxology in Darkness and join Sharon on her journey to …give thanks in a state of inner desolation [and] to trust in the love of God in the face of the marvels, cruel circumstances, obscenities, and commonplaces of life (Ruthless Trust, Manning).

Everything seems to be in a state of flux our country, the global economy, the church, our personal lives. We won t be doing a show today. I m under a pile of work, Sharon is wiped out after autistic field day, and something has got to give. I m afraid Etcetera is it. Surely it s a sign of living in a fallen world that when push comes to shove, buffoonery usually looses. Such is life. I hope to see you tomorrow at noon for the live stream of the Wednesday edition of Etcetera.

Human Trafficking

Did you know that 27 million individuals are enslaved around the globe today? (And that doesn t even include disc jockeys.) It s true, modern day slavery is a 30 billion dollar industry. It s an overwhelming and often hidden problem. On this edition of [ping], we re joined by two people who ve decided to do something about it. Eric and Stephanie have started something called Biking Against Human Trafficking. The week after Easter they ll be riding their bikes from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon and back (an 8-day, 450-mile trip), with the goal of raising awareness about human trafficking and motivating all us ham and eggers to do something about it. We talk about all that (and more) and still make time for buffoonery. So if you re in the mood for silliness, I don t think you ll be disappointed. We re like the sweet and sour chicken of podcasting! Will yin ya, then we ll yang ya. Kung pow! Listen to the program using one of the options below and visit the Biking Against Human Trafficking website for more info.

Imagine an episode of [ping] filled to the brim with copious amounts of witty (and occasionally deep) banter with me, Sharon and our good friend Gordo from Canada. You can almost hear us talking about the latest music or silent retreats or reminiscing about the quality billeting I received in the Great White North from one of my favorite Canucks. Well, you won t hear any of that on this week s [ping]. That was the show I had planned for you. Instead, you ll get me whining about doing the show alone and rambling on about my Lenten raw food diet while Jordo, Mark and Christov graciously hang out and talk me down from the ledge of disassociating myself from Christianity. Choose one of the options below to listen, and if you don t like the show blame Jordo. He made me do it.

On this week s [ping], Steve Chastain from Stupid Church People.com stopped by to catch up with me, Sharon, Jordo, and Dan. We talked about not being tripped up by our past, living in the moment, the People Project, and an absinthe drink called the Aunt Roberta (reported to be the world s strongest cocktail ). Use one of the links below to listen. Regarding the Aunt Roberta, apparently there s some dispute over whether or not it is in fact the strongest, but hear me now and believe me later it s strong. Here s the info on the Aunt Roberta from The QuarterMexican that I talked about on the show: It turns out this cocktail has an interesting history. It was invented in the 1800s by a mulatto prostitute who was running a bootleg drinks shack. Apparently, she stumbled upon it when drunk and was never able to get exactly the right measures again. One of her patrons took the recipe to New York and got rich selling it in his bar. Roughly 34 people died while drinking at Aunt Roberta s place during the two years it was open. (She also served homemade moonshine and it was a pretty rough crowd.) If the history of debauchery s not your thing, here s that link to the Feed em Dummy project. You can help out some people in need. [ping] has something for everyone. Check out the show below, then join us for the live stream on Tuesday at 4 ET.
