to an abrupt halt in Lorraine by the side of The River Seille, with his tanks out of petrol and the supply line back to Normandy stretched to breaking point. His scouts had been seen in the town of Chateau-Salins, thus it's inhabitants believed their freedom was imminent little knowing the Allies would only occupy for a fleeting moment and the liberation of their town would be left till last. During September 1944 the city of Nancy and surrounding villages such as Pettoncourt and Chambrey were all liberated. The Forest of Gremency was the scene of confused fighting amongst entrenchments, macabre relics of The First World War, a poignant and bitter reminder of the strategic importance of this region.
General Eddy, commanding, issued an order to withdraw back across The Seille, it was countermanded by Patton himself, however with the benefit of reinforcements namely reserves of the 5th Armored Division the day was saved with a total encirclement of the forest.
