The American middle class: losing ground

There has been a lot of talk on this topic. Some say the middle class is hurting and about to disappear, others say it isn't so and point the increased number of households with 6-figure incomes and a significant rise in median household income. Both sides are wrong on certain points and right on others.

Using the most up-to-date data and scholarly sources I set out to determine 1) What is the middle class and who's in it, and 2) is this group of households better off today than a generation ago?
