In a call given publically the Finance Minister P Chidambaram has asked his taxmen to ramp up collection targets significantly for this fiscal. This comes on the back of rising fiscal stress due to heavy duty tax cuts to fight inflation and high oil prices. In a bid to curb inflation the government has already lost over Rs 29,000 crore in indirect tax revenues like customs and excise in the first 2 months of the fiscal.
