I shared a desk at Ewell Castle School with Oliver Read. I did not realise that he had dyslexia when we were 15 and 16 year olds at school. He showed no interest in learning anything apart from a strong interest in English Literature. When we sat down together after assembly each morning he would ask me what we had to do for the previous night's homework. He would then grab my books and quickly copy as many details and answers as possible. He was a bit of a rebel but basically a nice chap. We became quite close and always spent our lunch breaks together chatting, often with his brother David who was also at the school. Ollie had started off as a boarder but like me finished up as a day boy. He was a good boxer a fine cross country runner. When I ran with him it was difficult to keep up to his pace. He used to give very good impressions of actors such as James Stuart and Robert Mitchum. We used to go to the cinema together sometimes on a Wednesday afternoon when we were supposed to be engaged in sport. He always wanted to be an actor. I last saw him in 1959 when I returned for a sports day. His acting career had just started and I was in the RAF.
