James Kalm is graciously allowed to document this, the first major retrospective of Martin Kippenberger at MoMA. This exhaustive survey covers works from the early eighties to shortly before Kippenberger’s death in 1997. In Part I, Kalm focuses on the installations, and highlights the artist’s influential status in what has currently been termed “Pathetic” or “Abject Art”. Featuring an extended interview with Ulrich Strothjohann, Kippenberger’s longtime collaborator and project consultant.
