DOD Theory video book chapter 9: fork hand extender prosthetic model
9th chapter of DOD: The Death of Depth," an early 2005 video exploration of Limited Fork Poetics (as Limited Fork Theory was then known, and had been known since LFT's birth in October 2004). This video book has been reconfigured from files and file fragments salvaged from a failed external hard drive (650GB of 800GB existing, as of this writing, as unreadable information). "The Death of Depth" was an outcome of the birth of forkergirl's understanding of the usual location of her (and, therefore, her/the fork's) interactions: on the surface, at the entrance to the interaction, boundary position; "depth" continuously reconfigured as the yet-to-explore, the to-be-connected-with; for when something is cut into, the cutter and the interaction tend to be relocated to a surface that emerges; what is exposed by cut or entry becomes available for consideration, itself a form of interaction. The surface is suitable for study. And if not complex, may become so with scale shifting: magnification Chapter 9 of "DOD: the death of depth" focuses on fork as utensil or tool; the device as literal model that extends range, reach of the hand using the device, the hand itself a model of a forking system and a forking system, with digits as tines and branches, and lines on the palm as basic units of geometry and other architecture as well as being models and tracks of imaginary paths that continue from the apparent finite boundaries of the hand into various infinities and realities. The fork itself is a model. What the fork captures is itself a model of capture as well as a model of whatever is extracted from it and/or added to it. Ideas are models. Information is used to construct models, and models of models. The limited fork is not a thing, but is act, event, movement, behavior, bifurcation itself; that which bifurcates and branches functions more as model of bifurcation. There is a chase of present state in a system of "present" that continuously updates, moves, is in flux, changing; the fixed or studied interaction part of a transformed system of being for participants and transformed systems of meaning, possibility, etc. Tainting is a path, that like any other, has apparently unlimited access & can be used to go anywhere. The branches and bifurcations in expanding out may be framed as seeking something with which to connect. The fruit that these branches can bear is the fruit of contact, the fruit of connection. As if bifurcating (or forking) interacting systems bifurcate for connecting, for linking, in the linking establishing a whole or totality that is configurable as context establishes another set of link-seeking branches. Bifurcations hook up this way and that way, are , well, promiscuous --perhaps once all possible linking systems have been mapped out, gaps will be filled, and a more genuine solidity will be achieved, for as it is, there's a lot of free space between the atoms of links.
