Description:
Tucked away across the road from Walden Pond, not far from where Henry David Thoreau walked and wrote, the modest blue-and-white trailer is the lone survivor of another era. Soon, it too will be gone. With its views of both Walden's woods and the town landfill, the trailer was home for more than 30 years to a friendly, spirited lady named Edna Toska. She moved to the trailer park, called Walden Breezes, in the 1970s when the land was privately owned and she was still working. The trailer park was still at its peak as a close-knit community, with 60 trailer homes grouped in circle around a large fieldstone fireplace used for cookouts. It became her retirement home. Shortly after Edna moved in, around 1976, the state Division of Parks purchased the land to become part of the 333 acres of natural woodland in Walden Pond State Reservation. Gradually all her neighbors left and she was alone. And now, she has moved to a nursing home and won't be moving back.
